Mantis
My PC broke (currently on a really old one) and I have to get a new one. Only problem is, all the PCs in the shops nowadays run on Windows 8 and I'm not using that. A lot of manufacturers sell business PCs with Windows 7 on them and I was just wondering if anyone had any experience buying a business PC for personal use? The prices are ok and I don't need anything with a great graphics card or anything.
Tegis Posted October 12, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted October 12, 2013 Best I've come across are Dell Latitude series and of course Thinkpads. Both are made to last and well supported for drivers.
Anthony Posted October 12, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted October 12, 2013 I read a while back that Lenovo pcs come with the option to downgrade to Windows 7, one of the reasons why Lenovo are increasing market share in a decreasing market. As an aside, I actually LIKE windows 8. Prefer it to 7.
limpid Posted October 13, 2013 Administrator Share Posted October 13, 2013 pc.co.uk (and many others) will sell you a PC without an OS pre-installed. Put Linux on it and say hello to modern computing.
Mantis
pc.co.uk (and many others) will sell you a PC without an OS pre-installed. Put Linux on it and say hello to modern computing. I looked into this website and it does seem to have a lot of good reviews. I like how you can choose exactly what you want and the fact that you can still get Windows 7 is a big plus for me. My only concern is that I've never brought from a website like that before. All of my past PCs have come straight out of places like Comet and PC World. I bought a custom PC from a PC repair shop last week and it was riddled with problems so I had to take it back. I trust that won't happen with these guys? Kwan
No, those are all factory settings. Any problem is probably one of your own making unless there's a defective part.
Davkaus
I'd vouch for PC Specialist, they sell good products and they stand behind them when it comes to after-sales support. PC World/Comet sell underpowered, overpriced PCs full of adverts and other bloatware shite that they're paid to shovel on to your PC. Ideally with a subscription to Norton chucked in. Their business model is to target people who don't really know a lot about computers, and their after-sales support philosophy is to lie through their teeth and hope that you don't know your statutory rights. You pretty much have to write the full text of the sales of goods act in your own excrement next to the PC World tills to have them refund or exchange faulty goods. You'd really struggle to find a worse place to purchase technology products than PC World and Comet. Edited October 14, 2013 by Davkaus
Mantis
Just bought one from PC Specialist. Nothing fancy but a lot better than my old one. Anyone else have any experiences with them?
