I think the only worry is Unai doesn’t stay too long in jobs. His longest job was at Valencia for 4 years, he stayed at Sevilla for 3 years and Villarreal for 2 years. He’s not an Arsenal Wenger type who even before he went to Arsenal had spent 7 years at Monaco and had only had 2-3 jobs. We might be different given the control he has been given here plus the fact he is very good friends with Nas by all accounts, but I don’t trust anything in football any more after Grealish left us. Also, Bayern is no small time job or a mess of a club like Manchester Utd. They are one of a few teams who can genuinely win the Champions League and apart from this season have won the Bundesliga pretty much every season for the last decade, and their squad is littered with top, top players. I think if we finish 4th this season and make Champions League I’d be very confident Unai would stay. If we finish 5th I’m a lot less confident. His answer to the links after Sunday’s game was “I am focused here, 100%”. Great, but that’s not exactly distancing himself from those rumours. I think he’ll stay at least one more season but we can’t be naive and think he’ll stay forever, you have to prepare for the worst with good contingency planning. Replacing him with a Gerrard like appointment would be a disaster, but bringing in someone of the quality of Amorim or Fonseca would be the sort of thing I’d expect from a well run club.

Great win after the slog of Thursday night, I was at the game today and really enjoyed it. We are so, so close to getting 4th now, we now get a good rest before Chelsea next Saturday which is very much needed. Gave Watkins man of the match because he was absolutely outstanding and deserved a goal but Rogers was close to getting it. Took his goal brilliantly and I was a mug for writing the signing off in January because Unai has seemingly unearthed a gem.

We’re not going to sell several of our best players in one window under these owners if we finish 5th. One is highly probable but it would be for big money and higher than their market value I’d suggest. You might well work with agents but we’ve sold one big player under Wes and Nassef and it was for a record British fee after we finished 11th. Lots of our best players are on long term deals, with the exception of Dougie but there’s lots of talk he’ll sign a new deal although that possibly hinges on us finishing 4th. And I say that as someone who would be absolutely gutted and pissed off if we missed out on 4th.

Emi is a complex character. In interviews he comes across as very polite, maybe even a bit reserved, and a really nice and respectful guy. But then during the game and especially during a penalty shootout he turns into the biggest shithouse known to man! His first thought after saving the final spot kick yesterday was to turn and wind up the crowd, jeez He’s a tremendous goalkeeper alone but his personality makes him even more formidable. An sbsolute gem but we already knew that.

Phew. We weren’t good at all, slow and turgid football for the most part. But job done I guess and first European semi final since 1982!

So we had a chance to break on them and then just end up passing backwards with no interest in attacking their goal. Boo.

You can’t really blame the players tonight, the tactics have been all wrong. Emery can go from absolute genius on Sunday to this, it’s bizarre.

Can’t believe what I’m watching to be honest. Players or manager don’t even look bothered they’re going out. We have to get 4th if we go out, but we may as well have just gone out early than come this far, what was the point.

And still we pass side to side at the back at 2 miles an hour like it’s a training game.

Thought Unai was a European specialist. That goal has been coming and he’s done nothing to change it at all.

This is absolutely horrific, Unai needs to do something because we aren’t doing anything. Although oddly he seems happy and calm on the sideline, can’t for the life of me understand what he’s watching.

Really bad first half I’m afraid. We need to do so much more in the 2nd half to avoid going out or it going to extra time. We really don’t want extra time and penalties even if we end up going through. Will screw us for Sunday’s game.

It’s a scrappy game but we’ve still been poor. We’re not going to crumble because we’re a very good side as proven four days ago. But our passing and movement is dreadful, admit it, go on.
