  1. CBs and Emi at 6s and 7s. All of them only trust Luiz to drop back and find the passes. Konsa, Mings and Martinez just not comfortable with a high press. May be one reason we just don't see the best of Luiz. Nobody behind him is comfortable enough and nobody else in midfield dictates possession and play with him so he needs to be more of an all action 6 than he is capable of. Put him alongside Kamara and with comfortable passers in CB and we might see Lockdown Luiz again
  2. Lovely work by Watkins. Bailey should've done much better. Thought his positioning was a bit weird too rather than attacking the 6 yard box - found space though and Watkins did well to find him under pressure. Awful strike
  3. Yeah maybe but it is more realistic than Kamara considering the interest in him
  4. This feels a more realistic target than Kamara if I'm honest. I don't know much about him other than 'OK' WhoScored match ratings. FBRef has him as a fantastic passer for a CB but the actual defensive metrics seem very poor. The WhoScored ratings though are OK, and not really sure how they'd be possible if his defensive stats were as poor as FBRef say. Anybody seen him?
  5. Yup. It's the one thing that I think maybe I'm just not used to when it comes to this summer. Do I envisage Luiz or McGinn being massive players for us next season? Possibly, I can see it could happen but we've been waiting 3 Premier League seasons for it to come to fruition. I still think they both could! I'd love to see it and it'd be great for us. But... McGinn has been touted at around £40-50m. We turned down £35m for Luiz just a few months ago. It's a big change for the club to have players we *could* lose, replace and not be completely crippled by selling. Will take some adjusting for a lot of fans. Whether it's them, Mings, Konsa, Watkins, Ings, Targett, even Davis we have assets at the club with value behind them - value we literally have not had at the club for a decade. The big change - and most important one - is for us to start getting it right on which ones to cash in on at the right time, and not lose the ones that still have a lot to offer. That's where I'm worried about this summer. But financially, for the health of the club, we're in a much better position than we've been for a long time
  6. Possibly, but the advantage of going after a sought-after talent on an expiring contract is that he'll be signing somewhere within days of his contract expiring at the end of the season - and it'll probably actually be sorted before the season is up as he can already speak to foreign clubs. It's not like he has 2 years left and we could chase and chase it all summer. It'll be done before the window opens one way or another and we can move on if he goes elsewhere. I was as frustrated as anyone with the ESR and JWP waste of time in the summer.. but this isn't really the same. Can't really hurt us to give it a good crack
  7. Apparently he played Vs Brentford in the friendly last week. So we could see him. However O'Reilly and Iroegbunam were specifically called out as the two players to have impressed Gerrard by the Birmingham Mail - so may be that Chrisene didn't do quite enough to win the shirt. However the B'ham Mail 'article' was short and vague so wasn't clear cut that only those two did well.. I'd be surprised to see him start considering his lack of football and not much time spent on the bench. There have been opportunities to get Chuk and Tim on the pitch and they've been on the bench half the season, not sure I see Chrisene going from minimal bench appearances to starter. Maybe we can be far enough ahead to get him 20 minutes, replacing Young late on in the game?
  8. To be fair, our end to last season was thoroughly dismissed as trash though, so only just getting back to being as good as that is still disappointing. (But it does also ignore the tumultuous time since tbf)
  9. Unless AFCON has expanded like is proposed for the Nations League with England and France now making an appearance, we'd only lose Bissouma. And, of course, Leon Bailey
  10. Lol I just knew this thread would be at the top when I came on. Getting too predictable now guys. Nothing to worry about. Got a better chance at Top Half than us going down. Neither are happening. We'll be 12th-15th
  11. Rightly or wrongly there's a big perception difference between us and Newcastle and the 'projects' at each club. I think Coutinho comes to us over them thanks to Gerrard but for others we are going to struggle Vs them all summer unless we are quicker off the mark and get deals done quickly or happen to have different targets
  12. I feel like coming from a Simeone team it'd be slightly different, they are brutal and work hard. I feel like he'd adapt pretty well as a result. He's not as progressive as Kamara for sure. His passing etc. isn't as good. His defensive abilities though are still good and his pressures are OK. I feel like he offers different things than Kamara but I'd actually anticipate with where he's coming from and his experience Kondogbia would acclimate quickest of the three. Kamara would be the best of the three by the end of a full season imo, just may need to acclimate to the league more as there's a big difference to Ligue Un and we've traditionally struggled with players from that league.
  13. I didn't necessarily mean height when saying 'monster CB'. Just a great defender, organiser and leader. I think we're going to find it tough to simultaneously try and get a ball-playing CB that can also replace Mings' good qualities in leadership and organisation, that doesn't have a clanger in them. It's why a little part of me wouldn't be surprised to see us buy two new CBs as if you try and replace Mings with a hypothetical LCB who is going to be a leader, captain, ball-playing, defensive wonder. It's going to cost big money
  14. That's true, Gomez is one of those players that also fills in at RB though, effectively a relatively mobile CB who can chip in at fullback - that sort of player we wouldn't usually see at LCB. Konsa, Chambers, Gomez and Tuanzebe all fit that bill, I'm not sure we'd see any of them at LCB. If we're going down that route, you'd want an absolute monster of a CB who can be organised etc and a big leader. Then they can fit in well and lead from LCB. VVD a good example, whilst I'm sure he could play fullback if pushed, he's a monster CB that plays on the left. I'd be nervous of a Gomez-Konsa back line though. Needs a heavy hitter in there alongside either of those two
  15. Not at all. I'd prefer him to be starting now over McGinn. I'm losing faith that Gerrard will want to keep him though. Although, we wanted him based off his form working with Kamara. You'd have to hope that he could reclaim that form if Kamara comes in too and we get to see the best of Sanson - and he gets a chance to show it!
  16. Quite, but Ramsey is 20 and will burn out or go through inconsistencies. As will Chuk - who may leave regardless - in which case, having McGinn to rotate with Bissouma, Chuk and Ramsey is a great option. He'd still get a lot of game time and be worth keeping around. Ramsey isn't yet a 90mins / 38 game player and someone like McGinn to rotate with him or to play instead of Bissouma if he needs a rest or in games we can dominate in would be ideal.
  17. Gerrard has been touring DMs and the alleged list looks impressive and pretty much taken straight from the names discussed on here over the last year - difficult for VT to be against any of these! According to Preece: Kamara is why they were in Marseille Kondogbia is why Gerrard was at Atleti v City Sangare is why Gerrard was at Leicester v PSV. All of those show we know exactly what we're looking for at DM. All of them would be impressive signings and they come at different fees and parts of their career, so whichever they prefer, if it doesn't work out we have clear options to fall back on that still improve us. I think Kondogbia > Kamara > Sangare in terms of immediate impact. But cases for all three being the first choice of the lot. Kamara probably the best long term signing and if he hit the ground running in the Prem would be perfect. Sangare whilst not as progressive as Kamara (but still good) would add some of the physicality offered by Kondogbia and be a more realistic option than the other two so stops us chasing a lost cause all summer.
  18. Preece saying he was there for Kamara. Also was at City v Atleti for Kondogbia Also was at Leicester v PSV for Sangare. I still think Purslow being at Marseille means that a meeting or money was actually being discussed. No need for him to be there otherwise. But Kamara and Sangare have been talked a lot about on here. Kondogbia also would be a stellar signing. Honestly any of those three would be good signings.
  19. Also having that defensive set up would make it easier to give game time to Iroegbunam, Chukweumeka if he stays and AJ in the future, the spine behind (or alongside in Tims case) would make it less risky to throw them in
  20. We'll go back to 2 8s in midfield. If you was to put Kamara Ramsey. Bissouma In there over Luiz, Ramsey, McGinn. It's a very different midfield to what we have currently even if the set up / formation is the same. I still think in an ideal world you'd want a bit more energy in there somehow but that is still available with McGinn or Sanson off the bench. Not like we could go and get someone like Gallagher too (and not sure Gallagher-Ramsey would work). I think that's a big change to our midfield with Kamara and Bissouma. Those two can't sit and keep the possession and allow Ramsey to roam and link up with Coutinho, Buendia etc al
  21. Would be a lovely signing. I've wanted him since the summer so would be happy with him. I had started to get quite excited about the Kondogbia links though, some physicality and nastiness in midfield is sorely needed and I feel as though he would be more certain to make the jump to the Prem quickly than Kamara. But don't get me wrong. I'd still be very happy with Kamara. Good signing if it comes off
  22. I was with you until this, they dwarf us in wealth, their ambitions will be larger and they've already over taken us in the league, they'll be fighting to be up there quickly
  23. Purslow is the interesting one. Lange and Gerrard make perfect sense. Purslow, ideally, should be nowhere near scouting. He should only be there if they're there to talk money. Kamara I suppose can sign as he's within his final 6 months of contract. So perhaps they're meeting with him and rolling out the proverbial red carpet
  24. Perhaps but he's only started 12 Ligue Un games this season so far (+7 sub appearances), with 7 League goals. So I'd be surprised if they all made the trip to watch a player who was quite likely not to start or perhaps even play. Though Marseille I'm sure is beautiful for the bank holiday weekend.
  25. Kondogbia or Kamara? If we could convince them both to come but could only bring in one, which would you want in that DM position come September?
