Coutinho is an icing on the cake player. He would probably thrive in a structured system but as we are a mess he is not what we need

I'm not quite sure how you to come to this conclusion.
He's our most in form attacking player. Nearly every piece of good, intricate attacking play comes through him. He simply has to play otherwise I'm not sure we'd score again this season. Have you seen Watkins and Bailey play recently?

How can he be not what we need

considering the money spent, i think its fair to say we have.

this is the last 4 seasons point tally, game by game:

We are currently on less points now, than at any time other than our first, and near relegation year.

If gain only 2 points from the next 3 games by game week 11, we would be on exactly the same points as when Deano was sacked.

in the PL, Deano's average PPG over 87 games was 1.18.

Gerrards PPG with Villa over 35 games is 1.23.

Considering the investment in the squad, and the squad quality difference over time, Gerrard is currently getting us 0.05 PPG more than deano, or 1.9 points more over an entire season, on average.

Considering that Gerrards PPG is actually decreasing over time, as it was 1.7 PPG in his first 17 games, it shows just how poor we have been for the last 15-20 games overall, especially considering that our squad, in theory, is of a much higher quality.

Basically, Gerrard is a fraud imo.

Avoiding relegation needs to be our aim this season. There is every chance we could drop.

I still keep seeing posts like "with the players we have". What players are these? Our forward line is one of the worst in the league. Watkins can't finish, Ings is anonymous every game. Bailey has been shite, as has Ramsey. McGinn hasnt had a good game in years. We have some decent players but it seems Villa fans are overrating this squad to the extreme. We should be doing better yes but people need to take a moment and look at who we have actually got.

I know everyone is going to blame Gerrard of course but this isnt as good a team as people think it is at all, especially with the injuries right now.

    Spot on.

We **** stink. Reminds me of Utd under OGS. Another chancer.

Sherwood would get us more points. Lambert would get us more points. Smith would get us more points.

Is this it for the season? Being the new Burnley of the PL. Keep it tight at all costs.

    "Continuous improvement"

    "No excuses"

    Get rid.

We do just literally hoof the ball to Watkins and hope for the best. The only decent play seems to be when Coutinho or Buendia get on the ball. Nobody else seems to be able to play through the lines or even want to play neat, intricate football.

A lot of our problems still lie in central midfield - SHOCK HORROR - with McGinn and to an extent Ramsey not being able to dictate play or control football matches.

Gerrard’s system stinks and his team selections are mostly baffling, but we’re still a poor side on paper for me. Bailey, Watkins and McGinn stink the place out nearly every week. You can’t be a successful PL side when three of your players consistently put in turgid performances.

Was really hoping that this would be the season for him to improve but have to say I'm not impressed.

Weak, poor decision making and has very little impact on a lot of our matches.

    Lucky to be starting.

Yep, just anonymous and weak when he gets on the ball. Clearly has a certain level of ability but might not be suited to the prem.

Ive tried to stick with him, but let’s be honest, he’s mostly shite.

  6. As poor as I think Gerrard is, let’s not forget we’re now playing with a very similar side to the one that almost got relegated.

We’re a below average side with or without Gerrard. Our main aim needs to be to avoid relegation. Arguing that we’ve spent lots of money and therefore shouldn’t be near the relegation zone is fanciful.

  7. Speechless at how poor his finishing is. You are allowed to hit the ball off the ground every now and again Ollie, you plonker.

Should be dropped after that performance. No two ways about it.

  8. I wonder how much the BOE will increase interest rates in November as a response to all of this. They’re widely predicted to hit 5% in May next year, but I imagine that would be staggered increases of 0.5/0.75% each time they meet.

I have a feeling they’ll increase by 1/1.25% in November as a big f*** you to the current budget and government. A few people are in for a rough ride, me included. This Tory government is a complete joke.

I've been hedging my bets on interest rates going up, people losing their houses and buying cheaper for the same house.

It sounds horrible for you, and I sympathise, but when I went into the mortgage broker and he turned around and said to me, I could borrow £250,000 when I was on (at the time) £35k a year,  I laughed at him and asked him what would happen if interest rates went up.

So I didn't over-borrow.  I borrowed £150,000k and bought a modest 3-bed semi because I was worried about job security (made redundant 3 times in 10 years) and interest rates eventually going up from historic lows.

As such, my mortgage is £600 and I'm on much better wages now, so can afford hikes in interest.

But I can't believe it when I ask friends about their mortgages and they're paying >1k a month and are on similar wages to what I was on (and more).  Who wants to spend 1k a month on a mortgage?!

Live a little more modestly and enjoy doing stuff.

So hopefully I'll be able to pick the bones of some poor sod who tried to touch the sun.

You can have my house soon..

My mortgage deal expires in March next year. Really shitty timing. Been speaking to my mortgage broker and he pretty much said there's not much I can do other than try and completely remortgage my house in November, leave the deal standing for a few months and compare the interest rate of whatever is offered in November against whatever it will be come March. But in no uncertain terms he stated to expect a massive increase in costs (shocker). He also stated that loads of people have been calling him in a panic cos they will be unable to afford their homes with an increased interest rate and general increase to cost of living, and lots are already putting their houses on the market. So will be interesting to see what happens with the housing market, i'm sure the rich will scoop up a few good deals.

We're incredibly fortunate that my gf inherited a house from her grandad when he passed which she rents out, it's very very tempting to sell our current house and move in there and try and dip back into the market if it has a wobble. But with a baby, it all feels a bit too much.

Can you not pay to get out of your current deal and tie up a new deal this week? Who are you with?

I don't believe so but i'm no economist. I've been feeling like there has to be a huge crash somewhere ever since covid started. Feels like it's kinda happening now but for other reasons.

I feel like when it happens, it will be big. And it will be awful.

  12. One of my family members just paid £12k to end their mortgage early and secure a new 5 year fix with Halifax. They were due to remortgage next December when it’s predicted interest rates will be close to 6%.

These increases have spooked a lot of people. Folks are mortgaged up to the hilt with balances that are 4/5x their combined salary’s. Even a 1% increase in the base rate is unaffordable. Now add in the rising cost of energy, food, fuel etc. and all of a sudden you have a perfect storm to f*** a large percentage of the population.

    Example.

Last December I was paying 930 a month for my mortgage and 150 a month for my energy. This December coming I’ll be paying 1200 for my mortgage and 400 for my energy. It’s not easy to find 450 extra a month when you have three young children.

Unless something drastic happens, I can’t see a future without a huge recession, house repossessions and people struggling to afford to even eat.

    Am I wrong?
