villarule123 Posted January 3, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 3, 2013 I have just bought a SSD for my Dell XPS 17, I want to do a clean install of Windows 7 but the laptop didn't come with a OEM CD. However, I have a Windows 7 disk from when I had a desktop, will I be ok to install it from that?
Tegis Posted January 3, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 3, 2013 If it's a retail win7 with a serial on it, yes. But you need that serial, Otherwise you can download a Dell OEM disk from sites connected with a certain sail-ship. Just make sure it's the same release as you had on the laptop (home basic, home premium, professional, 32bit, 64bit)And in before Simon says Ubuntu :-)
The_Rev
The Windows serial number should be on a sticker on the underside of your laptop. I have an XPS17 and that is where mine is. Edited January 3, 2013 by The_Rev
villarule123 Posted January 3, 2013 Author VT Supporter Share Posted January 3, 2013 I'm not sure you can use that code on a retail OEM though?
The_Rev
I'm not sure actually. I would hope you could though, or you would be **** if you ever had a hard drive failure.
darrenm
I've got a Dell latitude that I recently put an SSD into. Holy crap this thing flies. It does have Ubuntu on it though which helps.
darrenm
I'm not sure actually. I would hope you could though, or you would be **** if you ever had a hard drive failure. It will have a hidden install partition on the HDD without any media. You can't install from a retail CD, it will have to be a specific Dell install for the key to work. You'll have ring Dell to get/buy a CD. Or just install a decent free OS.
limpid Posted January 3, 2013 Administrator Share Posted January 3, 2013 Or just install a decent free OS. This times lots.
villarule123 Posted January 8, 2013 Author VT Supporter Share Posted January 8, 2013 I've just put this into my laptop, installed W7 but when I try to update my drivers on the dell website it doesn't open the site and opens 'FTP root' and constantly refreshes the page? Anyone know what's going on?
Tegis Posted January 8, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted January 8, 2013 Dell has website issues. Try these directlinks, dunno which XPS17 you have XPS 17 (L701x) XPS 17 (L702x)
