Yep. I think Guehi has been fine but a lot of the things he was getting praise for was basic stuff or even recovering from his own mistakes. I think he's got a bad habit of stepping in and getting the wrong side of the attacker too.
Konsa's performance was almost exemplary but as soon as that cross went through his legs (not even an error really) that was Southgate's excuse to drop him.
Fair points. I suppose my issue is that we didn't go out of tournaments to the best teams (except 2002) and the football we played was pretty dire, scraping past the likes of Trinidad & Tobago in 2006. And of course even failing to even qualify for Euro 2008.
Fair enough. I would have said it was pretty close with Rooney, Owen, Scholes, Gerrard, Beckham, Lampard, Cole, Terry, Ferdinand etc.
There's no doubt that we should be seeing better from this current England side though, especially with the quality in the final 3rd.
Disgusting. They should have torn up his contract last year, but of course they send him out on loan and wait for it to blow over a bit, then profit from him
Shame on the clubs willing to take him too.
While I completely agree we're not getting anywhere near the best out of this crop of players, for me the 'golden generation' still has to be the most disappointing. They played below par football and didn't get beyond a quarter final.
If Biden stays I can't see anything other than a Trump win. He needs to swallow his pride and step aside, for the sake of the nation.
I believe he won last time on competency and that isn't there this time. It's painful watching/listening to him.
Yep I could only assume the only bit of logic was to keep Kane on for penalties but even that wasn't the case. Looked like the perfect game for Ollie to me.
First half he was getting on the ball in pockets and played Saka in a couple of times. I thought he was our best presser too. Nipped in and won the ball a good few times. Don't disagree that he faded badly though as did most.
I guess the problem with Shaw is that he isn't fit to start. Stupid to take him if that's the case. Agreed on Watkins, I thought it was the perfect game for him to stretch a defence and keep them honest with pressing which Kane refused to do. I think Palmer and Foden could co exist.
Positives:
Into the next round
Was an improvement on previous games (even though the bar is ridiculously low)
The formation change brought a bit more balance
The penalties were good
Negatives:
Southgate being so slow to change things. He's been ridiculously lucky to get out of jail with the equalisers.
Still not creating enough and losing control of matches for long spells.
