  1. I only saw about 30 minutes of the match, but from what I saw, other than giving up the penalty (which was pretty bad!), Cash played OK today.
  2. Is he crazy or calculated? I think that he's a little of both. Most of the best goalkeepers (whether in football or ice hockey) have that edge to them...
  3. I would prefer to see Martinez mocking Mbappe after Mbappe moves to Real Madrid next year and we beat Real Madrid in the CL final next year.
  4. It's not good, but Olsen has shown signs of improvement this year, and Emi will be back for the second leg (when any shootout will take place), so I'm not going to panic.
  5. Agreed. Ollie has taken leaps and bounds forwards this year. Power still is not his strength, but that was a great penalty.
  6. Agreed...I don't think that he was quite as bad as some on here are making out. Mediocre, but not awful.
  7. BEST. IN. THE. WORLD. Though hats off to Chevalier, who was also excellent tonight.
  8. Match thread seems to have locked early. I think that Emi was cautioned. The laws state: "warnings and cautions issued to players and team officials during the match are not carried forward into penalties (penalty shoot-out)"
  9. Hard to believe...they just said that our last European shootout was against Inter Milan back in the 1990s. I remember that well...
  10. Might substitute DIgne or even Ollie for Rogers, but good list.
  11. He did what he should have. 99% of the time that goes in. That save reminded me of Banks on Pele.
  12. He and Pau have been our best defensive pairing this year. You can't blame either goal tonight on him. First was Digne's fault for not seeing the player who scored behind him. Second was Cash misjudging the ball's flight by about 6 inches.
  13. Far post runs behind him have been a weakness for a long time.
  14. I don't know if we'll score, but if we get one, I'm pretty confident we'll get two.
  15. We're having trouble progressing the ball. That's something that tactical changes should fix. It's Unai time.
  16. The game is played differently on the continent, and I think that the Conference League has been, and will continue to be, good training for the CL. The first Legia Warsaw match was an education in itself. Even if we qualify for the CL, I don't expect to win it the first (recent) time. Let's get there and get some experience.
  17. I disagree with this. On Saturday, we passed the ball into tight spaces in the box and, when the player realized he wasn't going to get a good shot, we recycled the ball back out. More to the point, once you get in the final third, I see nothing wrong with taking chances and losing the ball. Clear-cut opportunities are rare in this game. Sometimes you have to take chances. The reason Man City are so fearsome isn't that they never lose the ball; they do so in the final third rather often (not so much in midfield). It's just that they press so well when they do lose it. When Guardiola came to England, he added a Klopp-style high press to his system.
  18. Sounds familiar. I'm a Detroiter. We live in the suburbs, but the city proper went through bankruptcy proceedings (what you would call administration) about seven years ago because the city government could no longer pay its debts. It was a mess. The city owned the art museum and some creditors wanted to liquidate the entire art collection, Van Goghs, Rembrandts, and all, to collect their money. Fortunately, that part didn't happen and the museum has now been spun off as independent so it doesn't happen again.
  19. Just got back to London after our Villa Park pilgrimage. (Unfortunately, we have to catch a flight back to the States tomorrow morning). A few impressions from the pilgrimage and today's match... It was disappointing and frustrating to watch Villa throw away a lead like that in our first match at VP. That said, if it had to be a draw, I'm glad we saw a barnburner (pardon the Americanism; it means an intense, closely contested game where the result is in doubt until the end) rather than a dull 0-0 draw. The Holte End in full voice was a sound to behold. Too bad there wasn't more of it. You can blame my football-neophyte wife for the loss. She confessed on the way back to the hotel that she didn't know that Brentford were the Bees and wore socks with bees on them to the match. I doubt that anybody noticed, but if they did, they had to wonder why someone was wearing a Villa shirt with bee socks. I gave MOTM to Rogers. He was on my short list at halftime and his goal sealed it. Even before the goal he was showing skill with the ball and put in some defensive work. This is the first time I've seen what the club sees in him. McGinn and Watkins were also good today. Doug had a good first half, not so much the second. Konsa is not a RB. Priority in the summer has to be finding either proper cover for, or an upgrade to, Cash. Right before Brentford's first goal, I asked my son what Digne was doing on the right side. A few seconds later, the ball was at the opposite post where he should have been, and then in the net. I will be curious to watch the playback to see if Digne had an excuse for being there, and if so, to see who should have been covering for him on the left. Diego and Pau don't seem to communicate well. Football is so much better to watch in person. The whole family liked Brum. I'm sure it has its problems like any city, but as tourists, we really enjoyed our four days there. I'll write more about it later. UTV
  20. Three things made the difference... 1. The City possession machine was in full bloom and we couldn't win the ball. 2. As everyone already said, we had a team full of second choice players. (Related to #1...City would not have had quite so much of the ball if McGinn and Kamara were playing.) 3. Foden was outstanding. So, what do I take from our two matches against City this season? Villa at our best are good enough to dominate an off-day City (which would not have been the case even two years ago) but our second choice players are not good enough to hang with peak City (which is no surprise). Put another way, we've progressed, but we need a Foden or two and more depth before we can contend for the title. Looking forward to Brentford at Villa Park on Saturday.
  21. Knowing Guardiola's attention to detail, you have to wonder if he saw some old video of Zaniolo turning on a free kick and told Foden to aim it right at him.
  22. I hope that this won't turn into O'Neill and CSKA Moscow. But I doubt that it will.
