  1. I don't think our overall performance was terrible. We lost because of a series of individual errors including the Ref/VAR: Goal 1: Cash failed to hold the line (not for the first time) which allowed them a free run on goal. He frequently takes that extra step back as if he either doesn't quite trust the process or his own ability to get back and cover. There are a few examples of this tendency. Goal 2: Digne started to go with the runner then changed his mind too late and made a hopelessly doomed attempt to play offside. Again a free run on goal. Lenglet has been criticised for going into the challenge but I dare say he was relying on his team mates to maintain the offside line if he didn't win it. Olsen could perhaps have done better with it but he was dropped right in it. Goal 3: Utterly, pointless, brainless stupidity from Luiz, again not for the first time. Killed our momentum just when we were going for the kill. Goal 4: Lucky deflection, but McGinn should have closed down quicker, Konsa should not have turned his back and Olsen should have done better with it having got a strong hand on it. Missed Pen: McGinn and Diaby getting involved in scuffles added to the delay and pressure on Doug. Doug's performances recently and especially on the night were screaming "don't let him near the pen". Ref/VAR: Failed to give us or even review a clear pen, disallowed a goal for the softest of shirt pulls, and generally made some bizarre calls on fouls. Aside from those albeit critical errors, I thought the overall play was decent and their defence didn't look great. Eradicate the individual brain farts in the second leg and we have a fighting chance.
  2. And another thing what the **** has Luiz done to his barnet. Deserves dropping just for that.
  3. Yes the ref was a nob. The disallowed goal and maybe the pen conceded could both have gone the other way with a different ref, but it was some of the fouls he did and didn’t give that were baffling. The one where he stopped us building an attack so he could talk to but not book Podence was especially idiotic. And yes we had some bad luck like the deflection. But ultimately once again we were essentially the architects of our own downfall. Each of the full backs failed to hold the line which led to the first two goals. Cash is a serial offender in that respect but at least he played well the rest of the game. I thought Digne was pretty poor throughout. Olsen should have saved the fourth but some seem determined to blame him for everything that goes in. His presence may affect the confidence of those in front of him but you can’t really blame him when the defenders make unforced errors. And then there is Dougie. It’s not just tonight, he’s been crap since before his suspension. Maybe he’s fatigued but he comes across as not giving a toss and not being very intelligent. Makes some utterly brainless decisions including defending a corner with his arms up in the air. Some refs may have said he had no chance to get is arm out of the way but it shouldn’t have been up there in the first place.
  4. Despite his good record I had zero confidence in Luiz on that pen. He's just not at it recently and should not have taken it.
  5. Some unfair criticism of Olsen as usual but he should have stopped the fourth despite the deflection.
  6. He's got his arms up in the air, it's always going to be penailised,
  7. He keeps repeating the same mistakes. Dwelling on the ball, reacting to provocation, giving needless fouls away, slack lazy passes. I've said before he seem to lack intelligence even by footballers standards.
  8. If anyone is daft enough to offer us £100m for Luiz in the summer I'd snap their bloody hands off.
  9. And still people try to blame a keeper who was left totally exposed on both goals.
  10. Whenever there is a close offside call it's always Cash who is the doubt. He doesn't seem to trust the process or his pace enough to stay level with the others.
  11. I was going to post something but how does one compete with debating skills like this?
  12. Chelsea outplayed, outfought and outthought us for the second time at VP this year. On the way to the game I was hoping Emery had come up with a way to deal with their intensive man to man high press, also utilised effectively by Newcastle against us. Sadly he hadn’t. We wanted too much time on the ball and they didn’t allow it. Our pressing was feeble by comparison. We were at our best when we moved it quickly and first time and played through them but we only did it a few times mainly because we couldn’t get the ball off them for large chunks of the game. And when we did they were very effective at the high turnovers or else we gave up possession far too easily. We ended up resorting to a kind of hoofball in the second half. I have no idea how we were even one up at half time let alone two. At around 70 minutes, at 2-1, Chelsea were so dominant that loads of people around me were saying they’d take a draw. We were lucky to get that in the end. That Chelsea squad has the potential to be a real force next season. I thought their close control passing, movement and pressing were outstanding. Very impressed with Madueke in particular. If they can replace two or three weak links – Mudryk who was awful, and Jackson who seems to specialise in missing sitters, perhaps upgrade their left back options – they will be back in the mix. As for our lot, Tielemans was out best midfielder and it was a blow when he had to go off. Rogers was good in patches. Luiz is frustrating me – seems to want to stroll around at his own pace, doesn’t chase back enough to cover and seems to leave his brain at the door when he enters the pitch. Diego – another one who seems to favour brainless challenges in dangerous positions. He was absolutely dire last night. Olsen – how anyone is blaming him is beyond me. Did nothing wrong as far as I could see and made a brilliant save from Palmer. Not his fault our defence decided to give Gallagher about ten minutes to pick his spot from the edge of our box or that Luiz decided to lose possession in a dangerous place.
  13. I'm probably in a minority of one here but I never really took to Ashly Young MkI. I thought he was over rated, dived too much, and a bit of a nob as a person. Much rather have this Emery version of Bailey, he looks like he'll make something happen every time he has the ball. Peak Barry would be brilliant in this team and might have the edge over Dougie. Yorke was world class, or near as dammit, by the time we sold him, at which point he turned into a full on nob with the volume turned up to 11. So Ollie for me, if nothing else then just for not being a dick. Loved John Gidman when I was a lad and watched him from the youth team all the way through. McGinn > Mortimer for me, better technique.
  14. Possibly Watkins best performance in a Villa shirt despite not getting a goal himself. Especially second half. His control was much better than usual and he was giving their defenders nightmares. That Rogers looks like a real player, a taller version of Ramsey. He and Tielemans were also excellent. Our goals all came from quality passing and great finishes. Very impressive after a hard week.
  15. We didn't deserve it but I'll take it. Bloody awful performance overall. Felt like our entire midfield decided to take the night off. Oh well onwards and upwards.
  16. The Italian national side isn't what it was, and frankly even then I'm still surprised he gets picked. It's a bit like when England kept picking Joe Hart who was garbage even before Citeh shipped him out. I suppose he must have shown some from for Roma or Gala, but neither seem too bothered about letting him go. If our spending is going to be limited by FSR and FFP then I would prefer not to gamble a chunk of it on someone who has fluffed pretty much every chance to impress that we've given him. I'd rather get Philogene or Archer back.
  17. MOTM clearly Emi. They played like us but at a higher tempo and I thought they were the better side overall. Ref was massively inconsistent, gave free kicks for being barely touched, then let robust challenges go and reserved his yellow card for our fouls only. We created virtually zero after the subs - Duran and Diaby barely got a touch, Zaniolo was his usual ineffective self. Not sure I fancy our chances with only a one goal lead but we probably didn't deserve even that - although, just seen the penalty incident again and it looks a clear pen.
  18. I don't think he lacks effort, he just doesn't seem to offer much else. Can't seem to keep the ball, doesn't really create anything, not much of a threat to the opposition, too often a bit of a passenger. No way should we sign him.
  19. Indeed - perhaps they could even call it "No-pride Park". Saying they will spend the most ever for a Championship club in the Summer seems odd. First, they may not even be in the Championship by then, so a little presumptuous. . Second, they can hardly spend it on players and stay within PSR/FFP limits, because their revenue can't be all that.
  20. When he's been missing before he's been missed, the midfield is always poorer without him. He's always had a problem giving stupid fouls away though. When he first arrived I lost count of the times he'd get caught on the ball and lose it and then concede a foul with a clumsy attempt to get it back. He's way past the getting caught on the ball habit (which Kamara seemed to inherit) but still seems to go into a lot of challenges like a runaway train, going straight through players. Citeh's second goal came from a needless free kick concede by Doug, very shortly after he'd conceded one in a similar spot. He comes across as not being able to learn from his mistakes in that respect and perhaps not the brightest of individuals.
  21. Two points absolutely thrown away, and possibly 4th place with it. Lost focus for a period yet again. It’s like they thought at 2-0 they could cruise a bit and you can’t do that in the PL. Emery has got to do something about that. Don’t think it happens with Mings there. Konsa’s worst game in years, offered little going forward, misplaced multiple passes, and lost the ball leading to the third. Just watched the goals back and have to give Pau much of the blame for the third, Diego told him to go with Wissa and he just stopped giving him a tap in. He was pretty poor for the second too. Bailey was off it a bit but was being double marked all through. Rogers reminds me a bit of Ramsey at times, looks a decent player and took his goal brilliantly. Ollie was living off scraps and did amazingly to get two. Finally, Luiz has to be one of the dumbest footballers around. Constantly gives away unnecessary free kicks by getting suckered in, but getting himself a yellow in the last seconds for a two game ban was moronic even by his standards.
