I wonder if we'd have any chance of getting Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, currently on loan at Coventry, If we're going to sign an older left back for the first team, then I think we'd be well served also signing a younger one for the future, maybe that we could send on loan for a season or two, especially as we don't really have an equivalent to Kesler-Hayden in the left-back position.

If we sign Digne/Tagliafico/someone who is going to start as LB, we got Targett as backup, and we got Chrisene as a younger for the future. Chrisene is a few years under Kesler-Hayden but he is highly rated

    1) You've made a totally hilarious reference to a random player so I will follow suit. Robert Pires, Rodri, Joao Cancelo, Michael Essien, Evra, David De Gea all players (amongst over 150 others) who have had dogshit first seasons before going on to show their worth. You cannot write off a player after 6 games. Its absolutely ludicrous.

    2) Not true in the slightest. Demarai Gray was pretty average for BL but has come back to the PL (as one example) and done very nicely.

    Dude, its villalad21 :D

We all know there are no good players from Bundesliga who ever played in PL.

Apparently he has had offers to go to the Championship, but Villa thinks Swindon will be best till the end of the season with his limited game time.

Tbf this isnt that evil of rumours to slip out :D

If only, we could get a result with an outfield player, like we did with Martinez.

although Konsa, Mings and McGinn have been good buys.

Not many of the players bought after promotion have been "failures" thou. If we put in price and what they done.

Heaton and Wesley (not to their own fault), Samatta, Jota and Engels are the only ones I would say have been low return on investment. The loan of Drinkwater can also be added there, but a loan.

Sanson could be argued, but I believe he will be good for us in the future.

  5. We have a limited amount of money due to quite heavy spending since we got promoted.

My main question is how to approach this window. Do we go for either:

    1. Wait until summer with real quality due to better return on investment (january usually more expensive thant summer) and run with what we got. This could also give i.e. Chuk, Archer, JPB (unless loaned out) more chances

    2. Go big in january and pay the price.

If we feel Europe is out of reach this season I wouldnt mind nr 1. However then we also need to use the younger players, and not give game time to players who are not expected to be here in the future.

No matter the choice I expect any played to come in to be a clear upgrade on the ones we already have. Except CB where I can admit that competition might be the most needed. LB and DM are in dire need of strengthening.

So really we need to recall Barry, Young, Raikhy, Revan (both?), Bridge, and find them clubs where they will actually get game time.

(as of writing this, i believe we have defo recalled Barry & Raikhy)

Rumours are that Young is recalled as well

He is clearly a very good player, but......he only seems to be able to really reach those high levels when he has a more senior CB next to him who he can listen to/take instructions from (ie: Mings), Hause obviously isnt that more senior/talking/leader type to seem to get the best out of Konsa.

Im not trying to be negative, but its clear he plays better when he has someone like Mings next to him, who is a talker, likes firing out instructions etc, and konsa knows Mings will be behind him sweeping up most of the time if required (or visa versa with Konsa clearing up behind Mings), doesnt seemt to work so well with a defender on the "same level" in terms of leadership etc.

This is key, and is what all of our defenders do. Not only Konsa, Cash and Targett as well. Without Mings we look shaky

He definitely didnt play wide. He kept moving into the centre of the pitch. He wants to play as a 10 which doesnt really suit our system at all. Square peg.

Gerrard system puts the 2 players behind the strikers more narrowly than Smiths system.

Saying they play either wide or as a 10 are both correct and wrong. They play as both, generally stationed between the two positions.. Easy to spot in our defending, the two CMs are the ones out wide to defend while the two CAM/IF/wingers do it centrally.

Martinez isn’t doing anything wrong particularly but I wish he would pull off a few more worldie saves, earn us points like he did last season. At the moment he’s looking good but unremarkable, apart from that amazing save against Leicester from Barnes I think.

tbf he did have an amazing save on a shot yesterday.

  10. I dont understand how a player can go from one of the best in our team to one of the worst :( Without Mings he seems to falter even more.

Last season he was one of our best, was it due to the fact it was no fans in the stadium?

  11. Hause has been a great player for us with the price we got him for.

Yesterday did expose his flaws massively. Likeable fellow, but I cannot see a future here for him. Wish it was otherwise

  12. Yesterday we played with Watkins Ings and Buendia.

Watkins and Ings both wants to move into the same room, both refusing to pass to anyone in a better position.

I could count at least 3 times yesterday, if those two had opened their eyes and rolled it to Buendia coming with huge space on the opposite side we would have had a huge chance. So frustrating to see strikers being that ego, I feel we are playing Buendia worse. He is making great movement and creates space for himself, but our team refuses to pass to him (Cash done it many times this season as well).

I dont know if Watkins and Ings will work out, but right now it doesnt. Perhaps some times in the training field will help, right now. There is no cohesion in the movement up front.

You’ll never give Mings that much credit but just watch who wins nearly every single header when defending set pieces and Freekicks. It’s vital to how we defend them. Whilst Konsa might be the better all round defender I would argue Mings is more important to us.

Just look at the shambles our defense has been any time Mings has not been on the pitch... His leadership is so important on the pitch, and I am baffled by how many people that cannot see it. Konsa looks way worse when combined with Hause.

That bit in the first half when he took on the 2 man press in our own box and just stepped away from them without a care in the world 😂 I bet some villa hearts skipped a beat

Skipped, but also yelled out how brilliant of a man Mings is!

Only six teams have scored more goals than us this season, the current top four, and then Man Utd and Leicester.

10 teams have scored more from open play.
