  1. Sounds like he may well be available then, I thought he was very good at Fulham in their promotion season, I was very surprised they didn't go all out to get him permanently. I think he could work very well in our system and in Smiths capable hands. This ones a yes from me!
  2. I don't trust The Sun one bit, but... I like the look of Targett, it's definitely an area we need to upgrade, fee seems reasonable enough, and he fits the model we are looking for. I don't know enough about Southampton or their squad to know if they'd be willing to sell though.
  3. In this thread many people have stated how much they think we can spend and how much they think we will. I've seen pretty much as you've stated, as low as £50m and as high as £140m. With that context in mind I think it's fair enough to then say a signing as large as say £20m would be a significant dent in any of those possible budgets. I don't see why that point would be dismissed just because we don't have an official figure to work off. We don't have all the information on many subjects but we can still discuss them and speculate. Maybe I should of stated in the context of the thread before my post, I just didn't think it was required. Certainly myself and others could be a little more specific in our language, but it's the internet, what can you do?
  4. Isn't that just speculating? Isn't this a speculation thread? There will be a limit to how much we can spend, and I'm pretty sure it's okay to speculate about how much that might be.
  5. I agree, but one would imagine that there is a limit, it might not be a definite figure but at least a guideline to follow. We do not have an infinite amount of money to spend and we are not all of a sudden impervious to FFP. It would be poor management of the club to have an open chequebook policy, we need to be smart enough that if a worst case scenario happens the club is still in a financial position to survive. I don't believe there is a limit to how much we can spend on a goalkeeper, but taking £20m out of our budget whatever it may be. means the remaining budget has been significantly lowered, with many important positions still needing to be filled. I'm not saying we shouldn't spend £20m on Butland, I don't know what our budget is, I don't know what other deals are in the pipeline, but I think we should question the valuation of every player we are linked with and see if it offers value to our club. I like Butland, I hope we sign him, but at a price that is good for us. Is he worth £20m? That's the real debate, and how much that £20m might effect the rest of our business this summer should be part of that conversation.
  6. I went to l'equipe and they don't really present any reason to how they got to this figure, a few Lille fans on there calling BS and saying it's reported as €9m everywhere else. I get the feeling the overall deal was worth €9m including the loan fee, l'equipe have probably just removed that and got carried away. Either way it's a bargain!
  7. I don't really see anyone turning their noses up, just questioning the amount of money, which is fine, we should question potential fees, especially when so high. That's a big 'if', every transfer is a risk and I'd be more concerned if people weren't questioning chucking £20m at a keeper, it would make him the 7th most expensive keeper ever. I like Butland, I think he's a good keeper and would improve our spine enough to make it worth pursuing, but the fee has to be right as as well. He's a good age, and yes he's in the England squad but I wouldn't read too much in to that as there isn't much competition in the goalkeeping department right now. Is he worth £20m? Potentially a 5th or more of our budget for this summer? That's what we should really be debating.
  8. I agree with what you are saying, but I think people are more concerned about the amount we would be spending on a keeper taking up a lot of our budget, we aren't going to spend £20m on every player, if we do spend that much on one player people think it should probably be on a striker. They are just concerned the budget will be spent before we get around to the key areas. I think our team know what they are doing, I also don't think we'll be throwing £20m at a keeper but I guess we will see!
  9. I think one of the main differences between us and Fulham, is that we have to spend around £100m. We have to bring in the loan players from last year, that costs money, we have to replace the guys we've released, that costs money, we need to improve the first team to a Premier League level, that costs a lot of money, we need to do a lot of business, we don't really have a choice. Fulham had a pretty settled squad when they came up, a few loans they needed to bring in but not as many as us, they didn't release too many, they had a squad. At the start of this window we couldn't even put out a team! Their need was not as great as ours. They spent their money badly, focusing on attackers and midfielders where they were actually pretty strong already, and neglecting their defence which needed upgrading, they bought too many in to the first team too soon and really struggled to integrate so many, then they sacked their manager... so they had to start all over again... It was a right old mess. Thankfully it seems like we have been planning for this situation, Dean Smith has a good record of integrating a large number of players quickly, our manager has a say on signings, passes on what he needs to the board and they go from there rather than having players bought over his head like at Fulham. I'm sure we are looking for value which may bring the total down some, but we can't afford to be too cheap when it comes to quality, it costs money and we need some.
  10. How on earth did we stay up?... Whoever got relegated that year should be embarrassed...
  11. I mean some of them weren't as bad as all that for the price, like we definitely got £1m worth of decent football out of Bacuna, and Crespo at 700k was a shot to nothing really. In general though we've been pretty horrid in the transfer market for quite a while... Oh and don't forget pocket rocket Alan Wright for £1.5m, that was a bargain!
  12. Smith has primarily stuck to the same kind of system for a few years now, although it is a flexible system with interchangeable parts. He moulded the players to his system rather than the other way around last year. So I'd say he's looking for players for that system or similar with an eye on a plan B if required. My research on Fornals led me to believe he mainly sticks to the center and that's where most of his best ratings are, also his attributes are all similar to Jacks. I've not seen enough of him to really say much more than that. I wouldn't be surprised if we spent big money on one player but I'd think it wouldn't be in an area where we already have plenty of quality. I'm thinking most likely a striker or defensive midfielder would be the areas we really need to fill with quality, and a new left back wouldn't hurt either...
  13. I love it, gives me an excuse to go and research some players I've never heard of, and end up finding out random stuff, like I had no idea Daniele Bonera was at Villarreal and still going at 38, and wouldn't of done had I not looked up Pablo Fornals. Plus, I like to work out how these players might fit in to our squad/system.
  14. There's always a medical for any transfer where money is trading hands, the buying club needs to know there aren't any underlying injuries that may resurface as this could change the price or stop the transfer altogether, and then they can take out insurance on that player against various things which can't happen without a medical being completed, it's standard even if a loan is made permanent.
  15. After a bit of research on Pablo Fornals, he seems to be mainly an attacking central midfielder... we are pretty stocked in that area already, so I'd be surprised if we are throwing big money at this. https://www.whoscored.com/Players/297203/Show/Pablo-Fornals https://www.transfermarkt.com/pablo-fornals/profil/spieler/357885 He'd be a very expensive back up for Grealish...
  16. Well the thread has previously stated these players are believed to be valued at £20m each, so I gave reasons why we shouldn't try to get them with the price already a factor. If you ignore the price of course there's no reason for him not to try. Sorry if that wasn't apparent.
  17. If they were massively over priced? If they are injured? If we've found better value elsewhere? If we're looking at a Premier League players in the same position so it's less of a risk? There are plenty of reasons. I think we may well be interested in some of them, but I don't think we should have our pants pulled down on price, if we can't get them for a price that fits our budget we'll go elsewhere, and so we should. Brentford are not the only club that have good players, and they are not the only players Smith can get a tune out of. He did pretty well with players he didn't know last season...
  18. So glad he's back! He'll be very important for us next season. It's been assumed a done deal for ages but nice to have another one over the line. Does this mean we can put out a team now?
  19. Yep, Levy has this reputation of playing hard ball, but he's had his pants pulled down plenty of times too.
  20. Bent went to Spurs from Charlton for £22m in 07/08 after they were relegated
  21. I'm not against players 30+, but that have to be able to contribute on the pitch. Also, they tend to want big money as it is likely the last contract of their careers. I don't think we should over pay for cheerleaders, or change the way we play just to accommodate one player. The thing is there are not many out there that are going to fit our system. Our center backs are mobile, our full backs get up and down the pitch all game, our midfield are full of energy, quick wingers, forwards that need to press. It's a young mans game now. Our squad is small, so whoever we get in will need to be fit and available, we can't afford to have too many players in the treatment room for months at a time. I don't mind getting experienced players in, but it has to be the right ones and on our terms.
