England should not need to play two defensive midfielders against anyone, this therefore frees up space to accommodate your best players.
On current form there is nobody better than Grealish and his exclusion is baffling.
Phillips to be fair looks ok but Declan f****** Rice is atrocious and should not be anywhere near England squads.
I'm another who thinks Sancho is currently underperforming for England...
Anyway it's all good for Villa presuming Grealish was not carrying an injury because surely that is the only reason he didn't play? Any other reason is as I mentioned baffling!
This is not the face of a man who isn't playing because he is carrying a knock, rather it is the face of a man contemplating what he did to receive the punishment of having his international prime wasted by an utter buffoon.

Let's look at the 5 matches since Jack was called up.
Away at Iceland: soft penalty in injury time. Jack doesn't play.
Away at Denmark: no goals, Jack looks bright in a 15 minute cameo.
Home to Wales: three goals, Jack with a sublime assist for one and won the free kick that led to the second.
Home to Belgium: dive for a penalty and a major deflection for the second goal. Jack doesn't play.
Home to Denmark: no goals, Jack doesn't play.
So, in the past five games, England scored six goals, of which only two were from open play: one Jack created and one complete fluke of a deflection. Two other goals were harshly given pens and the final two from a FK Jack won and from a corner that Mings flicked on. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I suppose I can understand Southgate trying to get a team prepared for tournament football. But, from the first four games only ONE non-fluke goal was scored from open play. In the fifth game, 1-0 down and down to 10 me n...and the choice for creativity or win free kicks to get a goal is Henderson in midfield and DCL on the left? Forget the vest, Southgate should be in a straightjacket.

Until Mings played that long ball to him, if you told me Rashford went off the pitch with Maguire I would have believed you.

Asked another direct question about Grealish which he ducked and dived around to talk about anything but Grealish. Boring dork.

Where did he say these lovely things? I’ve not seen anything, but I have been working all day.
Quote"I think he is enjoying the experience and he's enjoying seeing how we want to play and that's slightly different to his club," the manager added.
"Obviously every player has to adjust to that, so he is very much in the frame. He's continuing to prove his position within the squad that's for sure."
Interesting comments. I guess Leeds play the same defensive shape as England do, that's why Phillips is getting so much game time. Contradictory comment #51831 from Southgate

7 defensive minded outfield players at home to Denmark. Is this UEFA Nations League or Live at the Apollo?

Any chance Ben Mee plays in Southgate's Sunday league?

Think that might be in his best interests to be fair. Don't know too much about Polish RBs but think he'd have a good chance of getting into the squad at least. With England he's competing with Trippier, Walker, Alex Arnold, James, Wan Bissaka and now Lamptey who's getting a lot of hype. Gonna be real tough getting a look in with England.
Lukasz Piszczek, the Dortmund player, recently retired from international football. Since then, their first choice RB has been Tomasz Kedziora (Dynamo Kyiv), although Bartosz Bereszynski (Sampdoria) has also started at RB.
Is Cash better than those two? I can't answer because I've never heard of them before...but, I would surmise that if they are integral parts of the squad then they might be hard to displace, especially since Cash doesn't speak the language and there could be communication problems, even if a few of the current squad have or are currently played in England.

So whilst this defending approach is horrible against weak teams it’s how he wants the team to learn how to play so they can grind out in result in tournament football.
If we bore the country but get to the semi finals or final of the Euros nobody will complain.
On 09/10/2020 at 18:26, Vive_La_Villa said:I think people are getting a bit carried away with the Southgate hates Grealish stuff. Yes he had a problem with him and should have called him sooner. But he has been called up and played the last 80 minutes or so.
You’re all acting like the school PE teacher isn’t picking your kid for the school football team.
I know these posts were a couple of days ago, but just going to bring them back here since they came to my mind...(it's easy to remember what Tiny Rick said!)
I agree with your first point...I think it's clear that Southgate is hellbent on playing a high, pressing game to grind out tournament results and for whatever reason doesn't think Jack can be effective in that system. Although most of us probably disagree with that, I don't think that is the issue a lot of people have. Rather, it's the essentially derogatory comments that Southgate constantly makes about/towards Jack.
Jack constantly not called up: "*insert infinite number of excuses that became contradictory*
Asked about Jack's debut: "Well I thought Conor Coady was excellent"
Asked again about Jack's debut: "Well I thought Mason Mount was excellent"
Asked about DCL's debut: "I thought he was excellent"
Subsequently asked about Jack's MOTM performance: "he was OK and brings something different but we have other players that can do the things that I am looking for and have an excellent impact on games. I thought a player who came on as a sub was excellent"
Jack compared to Gazza: "I played with Gazza and many other great players and Jack doesn't compare to them. They achieved many things in their career and Jack hasn't even proved himself against better opposition"
Mount was MOTM based on a massive deflection for the game winner: "He was phenomenal"
Maybe he didn't play today because of the knock he's carrying, but it's just the same nonsense spewed over and over again, doing whatever he can to deflect attention away. Basically telling the media to get f*cked with the hype about this player; I don't think he's good enough. Remember also that this was a 30-man squad for these three matches. I doubt he would have called Jack up in the first place if it was a normal 23 man squad.

Yeah, i'm now convinced Southgate as a problem with jack. He is the most inform player on that team cannot believe he is on the bench.
To be fair, he picked the arguably most out of form player in Maguire...
But, I've just watch Southgate's interview re Jack and Gazza, where he says "I've played with Gascoigne, Scholes, Rooney, Beckham...who were phenomenal, won Champions Leagues, etc...". What is this muppet trying to say? "I've played with players who are better and accomplished more than I've got at my disposal so my view is more important than anyone else's"? I'd be pretty peeved hearing my manager say that, let alone if I was Jack.

Maybe more like this. Overload the right-hand side, leaving Mount in acres of space on the left for the crossfield ball. Ample of opportunities for him to replicate the things Jack would have done. Genius planning from GS.

Again it's against the law to show any football match from the UK or worldwide at 3 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. That's the reason why we can't currently see all our games, they'd either have to scrap 3pm kick offs in the Prem or change the law and screw over lower league teams whose fans may decide to just stay home and watch the Premier League on telly rather than turn up to their local team.
Wasn't familiar with this rule and hadn't read the entire thread...thanks. But, most of the games lined up for PPV are not Saturday 3pm matches...

NBA League Pass is £25 a month and you can watch every game from every team
No unfair bias for fans of smaller / bigger teams
Even if the games are on network TV they're still available also*
£25 is still reasonable money, but not extortionate imo
Something like this would have been easy to copy, and they've got it wrong for me.
(*sure BT and Sky wouldn't let this bit happen...)The broadcasting rights of the Premier League, the biggest league of any kind in the world, are ridiculous. Prior to this PPV scheme, how could someone who lives in England not have potential access to watch all matches? Like you said...want to watch any NBA match? Pay a monthly fee and watch any match you want, regardless of where you live. Want to watch NFL? Pay a monthly fee and watch any match you want, regardless of where you live. Live in Canada? Pay a monthly fee for DAZN and watch any Premier League, EFL, UEFA, Serie A, NFL, etc. match. I'm living abroad and for £30/month I can watch any Premier League, EFL, Bundesliga, Ligue 1/2, Golf, NHL, NFL, etc. "Problem" is that the Premier League games generally won't have English commentary. Sure, I can watch it as such, but how can the biggest league in the world not give me any other options to watch the matches in English?
Prior to DAZN, there was a point in time when all Premier League games were broadcast in Canada on TV. Of course you needed a basic sports package to access the channels, but I always thought it was ridiculous that I could choose which game I wanted to watch while people in England have no choice on what games they can watch.

Basically:
’Yh he did ok. He can beat players, but so can Sancho and sterling. He’s comfortable at receiving the ball deep, but he’s not **** supposed to be there - that’s Rice/Phillips job. Mount came on in the same position, and he was excellent. He pressed a lot more than jack did, and also created 3 chances, which if even one had gone in, would have proved my point that he can do what Grealish can, but also brings other aspects to the game. We won, and that’s given me a big problem about how to never pick Jack again.’
For this reason I think he starts Jack again in that dull 7-3 formation, so that when England are getting battered he can bring Mount on (and possibly change tactics). Then he can say 1) Jack did nothing and/or 2) Mount changed the game when he come on.
