I don't think we're too far away now. They've got a top keeper, some excellent defenders and midfielders but so have we nowadays.

Just have to hope Ollie can eventually morph into a Vardy type and if not we get in another striker.

Tough ask as Vardy in last 5 years has simply become one of the best one on one finishers in world football, you never think he'll miss a one on one unlike many forwards.

Ollie already has more goals this season than Vardy had in his entire debut PL season 😊

    How so?

When Michael Oliver overturned our penalty, he clearly mouths 'got the ball' as his reasoning. I'm talking generally about fouls here, as clearly he decided getting the ball (or more accurately, the ball flicking off his shin) was the important factor in our game, regardless of March taking Trez out.

I am just expecting the same ref to follow his own logic.

Btw it's blatantly a red, but our pen was blatantly a pen.

Not sure I understand. Are you suggesting that it should not have been a free kick but still a red? Michael Oliver is not in a position to overturn the free kick decision, but you agree that his decision that it's a red is correct?

Came in here to have a look at opinions on the Newcastle decision last night. Watching the game (no sound as I cannot stand most of the commentary), when it went to VAR, I presumed it was to see if there was a foul. Clearly there wasn't and I presumed the ref was being sent over to reverse his decision. Imagine my surprise when he brandishes a red card and it's a penalty.

Absolutely shocking. Absolutely shocking. How they can justify it is absolutely embarrassing.

I thought that also, but when the replay was held frozen on the frame where Andersen/Wilson both had their foot on the 18 yard box, I wasn't sure what exactly they were looking at. Then, when the ref was heading over to the monitor, the commentator mentioned "we understand the penalty will stand and it's been checked for a red card offence". WTF? This again raises the question of how was not sending the player off a clear and obvious error??

It sounds melodramatic but it really is killing it. That fans haven’t been in stadiums has softened the backlash had they been the reactions in stadiums would have been palpable.

I watch less football now than ever because it’s just ruining it, I always said this would happen.

They are destroying everything good about the game, they have to act and admit the error. It should just be scrapped.

I can just imagine it now...fans chanting "f*ck VAR" and "VAR is shite" for 10 minutes, and the TV broadcast has to ironically turn off the pitchside microphones to block out the crowd noise so that the commentator isn't constantly saying "apologies for those of you who may have heard any offensive language"

  4. I really wish a journalist had the balls to call players out in these situations...

“Callum, did you think it was a penalty?”

    ”Yes”

    “Why?”

“He’s tugged me back and then kicked through the bottom of my foot”

“Are you sure about that? On replay it didn't look like there was anywhere near enough contact to result in both of your legs flailing in the air in the manner they did”

  5. Contact initiated outside the box when not the last man. If there is any contact in the box then it's the slightest of touches from toe to Wilson's heel, which never in a million years sends both of a striker's legs sprawling like that. It is becoming more and more apparent that VAR is just a euphemism for corruption.

I honestly think he's been pretty damn great for us. Man has 6 goals in 11 games. It should definitely be 7 in 11 too if not for VAR. If a striker was putting in these kinds of numbers for another team, we'd kill to have him.

I just find some of the criticism of his game bizaare. Its not like he's not doing anything but scoring goals either. He has the best all round game out of all our strikers we've had in recent years.

Like he's not perfect, but it feels like some people are expecting him to put a great performance every game. Not even Jack is that consistent.

Exactly. To put it in perspective, Aguero had 6 in his first 11 in his debut Premier League season. The best striker we've had since Benteke and he's being slated...

  7. Think we should check the FFP books and see if we paid only half the fee up front. Would make sense why he's arrived to us with only one of his feet.

On a serious note, I don't think they're the same quality, but, from a purely attacking sense, if we are going to play him on the right then we should look at how James plays for Everton. Left-footed player who likes to cut in playing on the right of a front three.

Not sure this is good for our game with them next week.

There will surely be an inquest and some strong words. Let's hope we are ready for their reaction. As I expect there will be one.

Based on simple maths, we should be beating these 14-2 next week, no?

OF COURSE we get West Brom just in time for their new manager bounce. I swear this happens every year for Villa.

For what it's worth, Big Sam has a mixed record in his first match for a new club:

    Everton: won 2-0 vs Huddersfield
Crystal Palace: lost 2-0 at Arsenal
    England: won 1-0 at Slovakia
Sunderland: lost 1-0 at West Brom
West Ham: lost 1-0 vs Cardiff
    Blackburn: won 3-0 vs Stoke
    Newcastle: won 3-1 at Bolton
    Bolton: lost 2-1 at Norwich

  10. I think he's being unfairly slated. He's looked very good on the counter and our team as a whole generally tend to struggle when being allowed to dominate play. Yes, he didn't look great today trying to create something, but other times he did get into some really good positions and was just waiting for the ball to reach him, but instead it ended up being blazed over the bar. If we had someone other than Grealish who could play a decent ball into the box, I'm sure he would have scored today.

He was away at the Champions, it doesn’t define him as a person. He scored 6 at Old Trafford, 5 at St Mary’s and 7 past Maccabi Haifa. Beat Man City and Arsenal too. Not exactly the Mr Negative the lazy sterotypers will have you believe.

    53 goals in 24 games.

Is this a Mourinho burner account? Why are you assuming that I meant anything other than a jest as a direct continuation of last night? I have watched basically all PL games this season---I watched them dismantle Saints and United---so I'm well aware of what his teams are capable of doing. But it is indeed a true fact that he defends on a lead on occasion.

  12. Gonna have a cheeky punt on Mee to get a yellow and Davis to score first in the second half. Can see this being a tight game with Davis brought on with around 20mins to go, linking up well with Jack and Ollie and bagging the winner. Gonna have a nice evening with me winnings.
