6 goals in 77 Palace appearances since Hodgson became manager

FTFY. 15 Premier League goals the season before. Palace had one shot (a penalty) at home to Brighton last week. Would be interesting to see how the big man does under a less defensive manager.

His pricetag comes with expectations, 3 in 5 is OK but scoring in 1 out of 5 while playing 90 minutes in each game is not really enough.

Early days yet and he's still getting used to the standard of the league but hopefully he'll start scoring on a more regular basis as we'll need him to. Comparisons to Kane or whatever is just ludicrous and unfair to the guy.

Let's cut him a little slack and look at it objectively.

Premier League debut against a well-drilled Sheffield United side who put 9 behind the ball after the sending off.

We scored 3 against Fulham, so no qualms he didn't get one there.

    Hat-trick vs Liverpool.

No disgrace in not scoring in tight match vs Leicester.

Isolated and on his own for much of the match against Leeds when our entire team was off.

I'm reserving my judgement on him for the run of games after the next international break. If he doesn't grab at least a few in those matches then there is cause for concern.

  3. Besides seeing how we bounce back from the Leeds result, I've been really looking forward to this one. Have watched most of Southampton's matches this season and have to say that Ings is starting to become one of my favourite non-Villa players. Just looks so smooth out there on the pitch and a danger every time he touches the ball. No disrespect to Ollie, but would love to have a player like him starting up front for us. They have a couple of other threats, including the Bluenose Adams, who has missed a few chances this season, but Ings is the main one. If we can contain him then I think we can bounce back strongly.

If there's one thing I can criticize about Smith, its that I don't think he's a very flexible manager. He seems to me the type that optimizes the team to its best capabilities, and then puts them on the pitch. He doesn't really optimize his team against the particular capabilties of the opposing team and his in game management responding to issues can be suspect and incredibly formulaic.

It's one of the few gripes I have with Deano also. He seems pretty intent on playing a certain way and rarely changes that... Even though I thought we would win, I think the formation we play does not suit playing Leeds and probably should have played with 5 at the back, but to be fair we probably didn't have the personnel for that with Hause out, Engles probably not fit for 90 mins, and Elmo not a natural CB.

He really didn't do that. He didn't think "I'm going to mug Mings here".

Bamford is a cheating c*** and tried to con the ref into giving a penalty. Mings did over-react by pushing him but, again, Bamford fell over in a way that a little girl would if she'd been denied her dolly.

What Mings was guilty of was the first goal. He "raced" back too nonchalantly and Konsa, quite rightly, passed Bamford onto him as he could see Cash was 1v2 at the far post. Mings solely got drawn to the ball and Bamford picked up the pieces.

Thrid goal, Bamford had four around him and not one of them made a serious attempt for the ball. Mings probably had the best chance but, for some reason, was way too casual on his approach.

The second goal was a good goal. If anybody was at fault you could point fingers at McGinn for not getting a good challenge in and Konsa for not going out to press the ball more.

I don't blame them. Get within one inch of that word removed and he'll stamp on your foot and start rolling like his ankle snapped off.

  6. I get the concern some here may have, but if the opponent's team name wasn't Leeds and their manager wasn't Bielsa, would we really be worried about this match? Their back line, especially with the injuries they have, looks pretty atrocious on paper. Last week Jack absolutely toyed with Castagne, a Belgium international with Champions League experience. I can hardly imagine what he will do to whatever Championship level player they'll stick on the right of their defence. And, outside their first two matches of the season, they have hardly looked much of a goal threat.

I could easily see us winning this comfortably, but as nature has it I'm sure I'll be eating my words at the end of the night.

Been meaning to post on here for a while about Jamie Carragher.

Why do these media companies keep on employing people who can't actually talk? I mean it should be the minimum requirement for a pundit/commentator.

During his Liverpool commentary (which I have watched back more times than is healthy for anyone) there are several places where I have absolutely no idea what he's just said.  I've replayed them a number of times and turned the volume up but still have no idea what he's mumbling on about.

By the way, people laugh at the Brummie accent? Pure scouse is truly painful on the ears.

    Reminded me of this classic...

  8. Last time we won 5 PL games in a row was 1998.

Will be nice to match that feat by beating Squatting Shite Haircut United.

Better question is when, if ever, was the last time we started a campaign with 5 straight victories.

Looking at the Ozil situation at Arsenal could be an eye opener for Jack regarding a move. I think Jack has a bit more of a work ethic but people forget 5/6 years ago Ozil was one of the best playmakers in the world. Football is becoming more about pressing and maybe he like Ozil would struggle in one of the teams like City or Liverpool and he will realise that he has a good thing going here

Are you saying Jack can't press? Is that you, Southgate?

But they don't have the aura of the other two, and probably never will.

I honestly can't see him playing for another English club. Imagine the stature he could eventually have with us. It's frightening the potential this kid has. He's unique.

He could be the first 200,million pound, player. Especially if he shines at the Euros.

If our season continues as positively as it has started and he tears it up at the Euros such that he is valued at 200 million pounds, what on earth makes you think he would want to be sold?

Most likely conjecture but suggests a new contract could find a way to remove the buy back?

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8845067/Douglas-Luiz-grew-admiring-Ronaldinho-lighting-Aston-Villas-season.html

"A new contract is surely imminent for Luiz, who moved to Villa from Manchester City 14 months ago. City have a buy-back arrangement which is likely to be removed as part of any new deal."

Re-signing Douglas Luiz to a long-term deal with the buy-back clause removed is arguably the best bit of business we can do over the next couple of transfer windows. Times are definitely turning for us if our best deals during the transfer windows are keeping our stars long-term.
