every player other than friedel were fantastic today, well actually cuellar brilliant defensively but a liability on the ball, i feel sorry for him being stuck out of position, but he is better than beye and not as good as collins/dunne on current form best home game for ages

are you for real?? friedel was at fault for the goal then in the 2nd half saved a couple of shots that were straihgt at him. if he didnt save them they would hav been even bigger **** ups than the one he let in i havent been keen on petrov in a 442 but credit where its due he was fantastic today imo

yeah angel had 1 good season 1 very good season and 3 or 4 pretty awful seasons so ill pick others i think

then this poll, and all the others, is flawed, as the thread originator appears to be going with a 4-4-2 formation. IMO we should first have had a poll for the formation, and then the polls to select the players for that formation :winkold: there was and it was voted 442, probably correctly as that was the most common formation throughout the decade however 532 predominated when merson was around and his best performances came in that formation at the top of the boateng/taylor/merson midfield (the best combination we have had this decade imo) i have already acknowledged elsewhere that he doesnt fit into the typical CM or RM of a 442

disappointing we sat so deep in the second half, every time we cleared it was coming straight back and i think we should have just played 451 with 3 proper centre mids because carew was neither here nor there, is never a midfielder and shouldnt have been asked to do that role. should have just started with delph or nrc altho he did work hard he was blowing out of his arse almost immediately and rarely got in the box as a result; it made him look like heskey, focking around on the half way line when we were attacking when we needed him in the box

he didnt play a lot on the RW at all, we mainly played 532 and he was attacking midfield with boateng and taylor, and that is where he played a lot better for us as well

taylor was better in the nineties imo as well

nobby solano for me as well at the moment, merse werent a right winger so he shouldnt be an option

thinking about it you have a valid point re:Taylor being better in the 90s even if you are wrong re: Merson as such i would pick barry and boateng in centre mid with merson ahead of them really rated boateng dont think we ever replaced him

I cant believe people are suggesting Merson was better prior to 00 truth is he was very average for us and out with niggles as well up until december 99 and that was the turning point in his villla career 18 months of consistently magic performances from that point onwards, but before 99 he was largely crap anyway ill go taylor and barry at centre mid and would want to pick merson in a free role as he cant be pigeonholed as a centre mid if the team is gonna be lined up as a 442

The only creativity I saw yesterday was lumping balls forward tbh. like watching us then

451 get carew off he hasnt got going yet this season bring him on if we need to force the issue like the blues game and revert to 442 saves petrov from looking pathetically bad as well
