Got to be honest, I'd be a huge favourite if Mixon had only got his normal 15-18 points.

panning out to be a good season, obviously my best for years even with Keenan Allen and Eli Mitchell not playing even half a game each.

He who owns all the RBs!  You beat me to both Pierce and Stevenson this season.  It might have been very different...

    I'm not bitter.

Some quotes on the English language version of the website at least

    https://villarrealcf.es/en/news/item/35951-emery-i-felt-at-home-at-villarreal

The most interesting quote is "Here I have been able to be me. They have given me great conditions to bring out my best version." I wonder if that is a slight dig at a previous job(s)?

It also seems we acted fast, certainly with Villareal. Whether we were making noises before or not it is difficult to tell.

    They acted fast indeed

  3. I disagree with the comments suggesting that he doesn't have an identity.

I posted the below in the tactics thread.  Emery uses a range of formations but they all fit within a philosophy of how the team plays together as a unit.  His teams play a high line, are compact and purposeful.

I also shared a link to this video of him explaining how Sevilla tactically defeated Liverpool.  The guy is a tactical master.

What is so exciting about Emery is he has adapted his formations and style of play at each club he's been at. He has focussed on a double pivot in various formations primarily the 4 2 3 1 and 4 4 2. I like his 4 4 2 at Villareal where it becomes a diamond in attack with the wide midfielders moving a bit narrow and one 6 moving into 10 role (I think Luiz will be superb in this system beside Kamara). He also uses his full backs in attack, but interestingly they join the attack when they are prolonged attacks, not as the primary width in a slow build up (ala Gerrard). Emery's teams have always employed counter attacking and pressing which I think is key for this squad and a team in our desired position of a consistently top 10 side.

The fact he is a cup specialist, he can set up teams specifically to maximise chances of progression by coming up with specific game plans for the opposition. We can hope to win a domestic cup under him. My gut tells me Emery will start out with the 4 2 3 1 and then adapt to his 4 4 2 as an option and we might see a 3 at the back formation in time but not regularly. I like that he gets 3 games before the World Cup, twice against United and once away to Brighton. I hope there is a big new manager bounce / continuation of Danks ball to get us to that break with some positivity.

The fact we have such a large talented squad lends itself to high energetic pressing game with use of all 5 subs as players tire.

I have done a bit of reading on his tactics and the ability to adapt is what excites me most.

Playing a base formation of 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-2 seems to be the most common but he has also played 4-1-4-1 and 4-4-1-1 depending on the situation.  He changes the tactics to create overloads in attack and to solidify the team defensively dependent on the opposition and even more granularly, during transitions (i.e. we might have one or two formations going forward and a different one going backwards).

I also like how the team, despite the formation, works as a unit to compress the opposition when playing without the ball - something that would have helped us in games where we have been overrun by inferior teams this season.  A high defensive line, the whole formation shifting width ways, closeness between all 10 outfield players, trigger points on who and when to press; everything has a purpose and a plan.  I can't wait to see this team play with an identity again.

I've added some links below that are interesting reads, but also a video where the man himself describes it so well.

  5. All I ask is that the next manager is actually qualified to make decisions that can influence a game. Be it before or during. I don't want another ex footballer who is mates with the board, I want a grown up that can make difficult decisions and organise a team.

I wonder what happens when a manager gets sacked straight after an away game. Is he still allowed to get the team coach back or is he forced to get the late night Mega Bus back to Birmingham?

I was wondering this too. Would be a bit awkward to step on the team bus.

I'd dare say that NS would give him an audience in London. Be gentlemanly about it and plenty of feedback. SG won't be too gutted to skip the bus home.

Would be the most disappointed by a manager since Eck…. TBH, he would probably surprise us with results but he played the most negative boring “successful” football in Premier League history.

There will be a revolt if Dyche gets it

It won't be pretty but we're in the survival game and I'd prefer our odds in that scenario.

I think Dyche could be right man for the job… right now… not long term

Exactly. Steady the ship. Play as a team. Be hard to beat. Organise that sorry excuse for a defence. And play the forwards to their strengths.

We want an Elite Manager. Not Burnley roll up your sleeves "come on" football

We won't get an elite manager. We are 17th in the league having scored half the goals of Erling Haaland. Who would want that job?

We’re not getting an elite manager. They’re going to have to undo Gerrard’s crap coaching out of them and then instil their methods.

Agree. Delusional to think an elite manager will end up here.

  11. The disappointing thing is that the next manager will come in, change the style (necessary) and have to spend the next couple of transfer windows reforming the squad, so we'll be standing still at best. None of the big name managers will fancy that challenge. It's a failure of management entirely.

Sean Dyche might be the only one keen on it.

The trade feature on this is a bit janky. So if my trade with @rhyscartwright_avfc goes through he will have CMC for the weekend but I won’t have had Chase for last nights game?

does that mean he could theoretically get the points for Chase last night and CMC this weekend?

If my memory serves me correctly, any player that has played won't be traded so the trade will probably be delayed. I won't guarantee it but I think you can rest easy.
