  1. Is all this debate on the high line still on-going? 🙄

    League form since UE:

    25 games; 15 wins, 4 draws, 6 losses, 40 GF 26 GA

11 of the goals against, came in a three game streak. We also had 9 clean sheets during the 25 games.

A reminder, these stats include the transition period for UE to get his ideas across.

We have added players that improve the spine of the team and that are likely to contribute to more goals scored and less conceded.

The benefits of the high line are definitely worth the risk, as is trusting UE to do his thing.

I don't understand how anyone thinks Pau isn't here to be part of the starting 11.

Paul is basically Emerys wet dream, he loves him, Emery has a crush on Pau like we have a crush on Emery.

    referring to my notes:

    • Every player assumed fit and available
    • I've shoehorned Chambers into backup RB because there is no one else (Revan?) that could play there right now.
    • No real assumption made on CB as could be any two of four in any single game
    • MC probably settled, depending on how SJM and JJ are rotated into those positions
    • I have no idea how the final third would setup other than Watkins, I expect them to rotate depending on the opposition
    • The advanced positions offer the most opportunity to improve, if;
      • Coutinho doesn't make it
      • if we sign a new FW

Looking for constructive comments and not nitpicking on the selection...

    Thanks for reading

  4. He'll be fresh legs in time for; Prem, ECL Group and League Cup congestion. He will be like a new signing and his absence should increase the competition amongst the incumbents.

Probably don't think he's worth it.

Was pretty much one of their top-performing players during their playoff run. Difficult to generate great stats in his position but his passing success sticks out by a mile.

I reckon they will have him if they can get him and it will be a good match for now and in the future.

He reminds me of Ollie with his runs, especially when Ollie played a bit wider (occasionally for us and at Brentford)

Not sure how I feel about him having the same celebration as Cameron Archer - who legit gets to use that celebration.

How good is Pau Torres? Spanish defender set to become Aston Villa's first major summer signing

Aston Villa are set to complete their first major signing of the summer transfer window, after the Premier League side reportedly agreed personal terms with Villarreal central defender Pau Torres. According to the Guardian, Villa will pay around €40 million for the Spanish international in a move that will see Torres reunite with former manager Unai Emery.

Torres is set to arrive as Villa’s second signing of the summer window, following the successful signing of former Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans. The Belgium international’s contract at the Foxes had expired and was therefore allowed to make the move to Villa on a free transfer. However, the aforementioned pair are unlikely to be the full extent of Villa’s summer spending as the club look to capitalise on a strong second half of the season under Emery, which saw the club finish in seventh place in the Premier League table.

How good is new Aston Villa defender Pau Torres?
Coming through the Villarreal youth academy, Torres has long been considered one of Spanish football’s most promising central defenders. Following a loan spell at Malaga, the defender really got into his stride at his boyhood club between 2020 and 2022, when his market value soared from €6m up to a career-high of €50m. And while that figure has since dropped marginally to €45m since then, Torres is still undoubtedly an excellent defender.

    Market Value
    Pau Torres
    Centre-Back
    €45.00m

This much can be deduced from his stats from the previous campaign. Although the defender is certainly not the best in the air, there have been few better in LaLiga at reading the game and thriving in stopping opposing attacks. For example, among other central defenders in the Spanish top flight, Torres finished fourth for blocks, sixth for ground duels won, second for last man tackles and fifth for recoveries.

In other words, while Torres may not be your typical, traditional central defender in the air, he should compliment more physical players like Tyrone Mings or Diego Carlos with his technical ability and smart reading of the game. Whether he can help Villa continue climbing up the Premier League table remains to be seen, but for €40m he should prove to be a very useful signing.

been at villareal all his career. born and raised there. would be quite a coup to tempt him away from there

Birmingham > Villarreal, or so I heard.

Who needs sun-soaked beaches when you can have murky greyness?

I hope Pau doesn't read this.

That training kit looks soaking wet, like they just pulled McGinn in out of the rain to sign his contract. I'm sure it's just the picture, but it's an odd looking material.

To be fair, it is SJM. His kit is usually sweat-through before the game starts.
