  1. It might be interesting to stop thinking as fans for a moment (we all know what we want), and to try and imagine what Randy wants over the term of his next managers contract. It might point us to his target.
  2. Randy has already been through one painful management divorce with Mon, which might make him less inclined to appoint a "macho" manager like Rafa. Shy Steve might be the kind of "coach" RL wants this time round.
  3. I agree with this.. Was Mangenius a popular choice with the fans at the time? or was it against popular opinion? I believe Mangini was third favorite on RL's list of three behind Cowher and Pioli. Fan's were split between those who thought that he was too young and inexperienced and also would not be liked by the squad, and those that thought that his time with Bob Belichick might stand him in good stead. Fans turned against him almost immediately after a bad start to the season. The recent appointment of Pat Shurmur as Mangini's successor was handled by the vastly experienced Mike Holmgren rather than RL and was a surprisingly quick process. Brown's fans seem considerably more upbeat about the coming season. I get the impression that Randy would love to implement the Browns system at Villa, with an experienced veteran DOF overseeing the signings and strategic planning, while a younger quality coach would be in charge of the day to day stuff. However that doesn't seem to be popular this side of the pond.
  4. Randy Lerner places a great deal of faith in the actual face to face interview of a management candidate. When he appointed Eric Mangini as Brown's coach in 2009 it was after a "compelling" interview in which EM was said to have fascinated RL. The slight problem with trying to identify a candidate who totally shares your vision in an interview, is that less talented candidates may be better at bullsh*tting than their better qualified competitors.
  5. I totally agree with the bearded one. Ancelotti would have been exciting and very high profile, but Moyes would be a far more pragmatic choice imo.
  6. Why doesn't MM post on VT at the moment? Have I missed something? :?
  7. It's interesting that MysteryMan is saying that while Hughes is a 100% no goer, he knows that there is interest in Ancelotti but he wonders how we would fund any such deal. MM is usually reliable with his info.
  8. A good summing up of the likely candidates. Moyes would be my pick for exactly the reasons you've stated.
  9. With Friedel gone appointing a new manager has to be done quickly. If we wait until july 1st for MH then potential targets like Foster may well have been snapped up already.
  10. If it is Hughes then it will be a good safe and strong appointment. It probably won't light up season ticket sales immediately, but we've got the kind of squad that he may well get the best out of. UTV!!!!
  11. I present you this! I love it! Sign up Carlo now Randy, all aboard!
  12. There's only one way to find out! I couldn't even spell Ferrari correctly, so what do I know!
  13. I can see why the prospect of getting Ancelotti would cause real excitement, but I wonder whether he fits the current Villa business model given the assets we currently have? Should Randy take a punt on a Ferrari, when all his research tells him that Villa currently need a reliable minibus with extra seats for a couple of new additions? Don't get me wrong I'd love to see Carlo at the Villa, but does he have the right management qualities for AVFC circa 2011?
  14. I'm a long term admirer of Moyes. Does anyone remember the way he got Preston North End playing? It was great to watch. Just imagine a Villa player saying no to Moyes in training or on matchdays .... then stand back and light the blue touch paper!
  15. Really? Thats funny because I was sure MON jumped ship days before the season was to start over transfer funds and being told to cut the wage bill etc etc, I dont ever remember the fans forcing him out. He threw his toys out the pram. End of. That's exactly how I remember it. MON was copping lots of flak from the fans due to his standard March Misadventure, fans thought that we should be doing better and improving each season due to the amount of money spent and there was generally just an air of discontent. MON started looking for alternative employment during the season after moaning about the fans booing quite a few times and he was looking to get the Liverpool job. Randy took bad advice and tightened the purse strings in an attempt to rein in MON's supposed overspending that he himself had sanctioned and MON had a freddy. It's all fairly well documented. Randy didn't take bad advice. He finally insisted on implementing the instructions that he had given to Mon much earlier, "cut this outrageous wage bill before you seek to add salaries to it again." Mon considered this to be an unacceptable intrusion on his ability to manage and left in a huff. (imo of course) Randy will be all the wiser for this experience when he appoints this manager.
  16. Villa need to appoint an excellent LONG TERM manager, which is why I would prefer Moyes to Ancelotti.
  17. General, do you think that experience of managing a Villa "type" club in the Premiership is important in making our next appointment? If you do then you are in agreement with 49% of posters who have posted in the "next Villa manager section." The outstanding candidate is David Moyes. As the next Villa manager he would virtually guarantee 7 or 8 seasons of continuing Premiership status, while at the same time improving us year on year with Randy's committed investment. (imo of course, and as always UTV!!!!)
  18. My fellow VillaTalk posters there is still time to make a difference. 49% of us have voted for David Moyes and 5% have voted for Mark Hughes. My suggestion is that the 49% of us all post on the Generals thread in the next few hours to point out to the board that appointing Moyes = 7 or 8 seasons of trouble free premiership status with the added incentive of real investment being turned into real progress. I'm just off to the General's thread to try and make a difference.
  19. I would have been interested to watch a fully fit Houllier implement his detailed plan for the future of AVFC. However, he isn't going to be fully fit again so the rigours of Prem management are now too much for him imo. Moyes has proven that as well as being hard to beat, his team can play football on the ground. When the likes of Arteta and Pienaar were playing against us under Mon they often made us look second best. The big difference between GH and Mon was the disciplined control of players which was something that we sadly missed when Mon left us. DM would establish iron discipline from day one and players like Dunne and Collins would not dare to try any of their "player power" shenanigans. A squad that only has one leader can concentrate on one thing .... winning matches. Managers such as Ancellotti and Benitez may have a more technical approach to the game, but Moyes would be my choice for combining the best of Mon and Houllier in one package.
  20. Good morning USA. I think it's probably safe to post while there is an outbreak of commonsense happening, I'll be quick because it won't last! Do you share my excitement about next season? There's less than three months to go! Best wishes to Randy and please tell him to get a well earned rest at some stage, because we don't want him keeling over as well. UTV!!!!
  21. Makoun's ability to spot and complete the early pass will make a difference to Villa over the next couple of seasons. Our young players are going to benefit from training with J2M on a daily basis.
  22. I assume Stephen Ireland. Hopefully he will be well gone.... Sorry I was referring to Warnock! Anyway back to Hughes, if we are being REALISTIC, can you honestly think of a better available manager at the moment?! Reasonable but uninspiring choice and probably a safe pair of hands. I keep thinking back with some trepidation to that seemingly endless run of draws in his last season at city.
  23. Bent is a prolific goal scorer and he plays for Aston Villa. That says it all surely.
  24. Moyes would be my preference. I think we need a strong and experienced manager who would quickly show our senior players a bit of iron discipline. Moyes is a tough no nonsense manager who demands respect, and all our players already know that. Plus he has a knack of handling talented young players very well. Randy and Moyes could be a marriage made in heaven.
  25. Paul Lambert has gained a lot of respect within football for his managerial abilities and success. He was also well respected as a footballer. He gets 100% out of his players week in and week out which is something that we've missed at AV, and his team always look well organised. Appointing a relatively young up and coming manager could be seen as a risk, but if he keeps up his current standards PL could be a success in the PL. If Houllier were to be offered the part time position of Director of club planning (not football) with the clear remit that Lambert was in charge of all team decisions then it could work.
