Player Match Ratings: Woah, we’re half way there!

Its only half time, despite Bon Jovi’s confidence, but if we can hold on to what we’ve got at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night, then we’ll make it to Wembley on 27th May.

We take a one goal lead with us on Tuesday night and that didn’t really look very likely at half time, did it? Albion arrived yesterday, with avoiding defeat as their primary objective. Is Pulis providing Jimmy Shan with tactical advice as well as Michael Appleton?

The first half looked like a carbon copy of the game they had won at Villa Park in February. They were solid at the back, worked hard, flooded the midfield and gave us very little space. Jack and John’s threat from the middle had been nullified by them during the first half. We had plenty of possession, but we had created very little of note with it and we gifted them the lead on 16 minutes to boot.

What a time this would have been for the winning form that had gotten us into these playoffs to have deserted us. This Villa team are not beaten that easily though. The game was turned on its head by two goals in 4 minutes from us as we went into the last 15 minutes of normal time. Dwight Gayle’s 88th minute red card, when the referee had finally lost patience with him will result in their hot-headed, top scorer missing the second leg. That may yet prove as important to the outcome of this tie, as was the introduction from the bench of Conor Hourihane yesterday.

We have seen a couple of Lazarus like semi-final comebacks over the past couple of days. Our own comeback deflated our visitor’s yesterday. The tie is not won yet, but we will not be as ineffective as we were in the first half again. Albion must also make it a more open game in search of a goal that would level the score. That will give us the space we were denied yesterday and the chance to put the game beyond them.

The claret & blue relief was as clear at the final whistle, as was the disappointment that was etched on the faces of the whinging Albion players, staff and supporters. We must now finish the job on Tuesday evening. We are two wins away from promotion. It is high time that we left Wembley rejoicing a win, rather than having experienced a painful defeat. Do it for us Villa!

My player ratings from a game that has left us, tantalisingly within touching distance of a second successive Wembley play off final appearance are:

Jed Steer – 7 – Both he and Taylor went for the same ball on 11 minutes that neither got to. He made up for that communication breakdown seconds later, when he got his fingertips to help a Rodriguez shot from the edge of the box onto the crossbar, that would otherwise have produced a goal.

Ahmed Elmohamady – 6 – He has rightly become an undisputed first choice, hasn’t he?

Axel Tuanzebe - 7 – Another good display alongside Tyrone.

Tyrone Mings – 7 – Solid at the back, although facing free-scoring opponents. Hit a 45th minute shot from the edge of the box that forced a save from Johnstone.

Neil Taylor – 6 – Did well enough.

Albert Adomah – 5 – Failed to make a real impression on this game, which was disappointing.

Glenn Whelan – 5 – He has been immense in our midfield of late, but Glenn didn’t produce quite the same level of performance that he has been giving in recent weeks yesterday. Made a costly error that gave them an early lead, when he failed to control a pass back to him from Jack on 16 minutes, that Gayle proceeded to run onto before hitting a shot past Steer.

John McGinn – 6 – Kept unusually quiet, but even the very best players don’t do it every week, like John they do it 99% of the time. I wouldn’t want to bet against him taking Tuesday’s game by the scruff of the neck and not letting it go.

Jack Grealish – 7 – Didn’t make his usual impact upon the game during the first half but he still had a hand in both of our goals. Won a challenge on the edge of the box before hitting a 59th minute shot that Johnstone saved easily enough to his right. Ran into the right-hand side of the box before pulling the ball back to Hourihane on the edge of the box to claim an assist for our equaliser. Was moving towards the near post when Gibbs slid in to bring him down near the 6-yard box for our penalty

Anwar El Ghazi - 6 – Hit a shot from the left-hand side of the box that took a deflection off Holgate before being held by Johnstone at the foot of the near post.

Tammy Abraham – 7 – Left isolated and starved of service in the first half on his return to the team. Hit a first-time effort over the bar on 15 minutes from an Elmo cross. Made an increasingly significant impression on the game during the second half. Elmo played a ball down the line for him which he ran on with before cutting into the box, outpacing a defender and hitting a cross that Johnstone blocked low at the near post on 52 minutes. Nodded a 55th minute Taylor cross over and past the far post.

Tammy was the coolest man in the ground when he put away his 79th minute penalty, sending Johnstone the wrong way and the ball into the right-hand corner of the net for our winner. Holgate was looking for any excuse to go down when Tammy jumped for a header inside the box and he went down dramatically to try to steal a late penalty for his shell-shocked side.

Substitutes:

Conor Hourihane – 8 – MOTM – Replaced Whelan on 67 minutes. His introduction led to Jack moving further forward and he made the difference yesterday. Conor was in space on the edge of the box when Grealish played the ball back to him on 75 minutes. His aim was true and his superbly hit left foot shot flashed into the left-hand corner of the net, with Johnstone just a spectator. Had earlier made an important 74th minute interception, stretching to reach a ball intended for the unmarked Murphy from Gayle.

Andre Green – 6 - Came on for Adomah on 67 minutes and provided some pace.

Jonathan Kodjia – Replaced El Ghazi on 91 minutes. Not on long enough to gain a rating.

Up the Villa!

    • @CarryOnVilla - apologies, I didn't reply yesterday - had to go to bed down here, and 'ran out of replies' - I can only post 5 times a day as I'm a newbie!  To answer your question - I'd pitch these design to the Villa, - as I think they fit the bill and represent Villa for shirt, media, merchandising, stadium etc.  I'd also pass on the blue AV diamond on claret background with gold lion,  from someone on here previously - Teale's Tash I think - that is a fantastic design, unique for villa designs, has heritage with the old frontage and top of old Trinity Rd fascia vibes, fairly unique (I can only think of Monchengladbach with a diamond shape) and just stands out for Villa, looked good on kit mock up and great design - doesn't say our name, but I don't think it needs to. @Teale's 'tache - if that was your design, can you repost it please? - I can't locate it in the 240 pages of this thread.  And I hear your point on designers possibly having their hands tied - which may well be the case, Id love to hear the brief they were given!  Apologies if I came across too hard, when they are probably restricted to half a job, to tweak the rubbish we already have, to save costs, and potentially evolve one slow mutation at a time, but its so bad!....
    • I've finally watched "O.J. Made in America" since it's recently been put on Netflix. I'd somehow not heard any reviews of the 5-part docuseries, so I had no idea just how **** good it is. In some ways it's not even directly about Simpson. It's much broader than just him. It's a fascinating cultural dissection of Los Angeles and by extension, American society at large in the second half of the 20th century and our intractable problems with racism, social cohesion, classism, misogyny, police violence, justice and celebrity worship. It's shocking and lurid and infuriating and of course tragic. I was surprised that they showed the murder scene photos. Massive pools of blood. Multiple angles and up close on the knife wounds. It was a butchering. As upsetting as the photos were, the thing that I found hardest to deal with were the multiple 911 calls from his wife over the course of their marriage, and the primal fear in her voice each time. She predicted her own murder. And she was badly let down by a system that should have protected her. As despicable a character as O.J. was, I still couldn't help but feel a tinge of pity for him as he spiraled downward when the public turned on him after his acquittal and he lost everything. I don't think there's ever been a fall from grace like his. He became a broken, pathetic figure, and I think anyone with normal human empathy can compartmentalize their assessment of him within a broader societal context, even if he was a terrible human being. O.J. was a victim as well, in a roundabout way. A victim of a quasi-apartheid caste system growing up in abandoned army barracks-turned public housing. A victim of low expectations, systemic oppression and internalized self-hatred as a product of that system. Once O.J. fell, America gleefully put its boot back on his neck and branded the N word on his forehead. Right back where he started from in the 1950's. And there is something really sad about that. His first wife who he met in high school in San Francisco is quoted as saying that "O.J. was an awful person back then.", which makes me think that O.J. was probably bad news since adolescence and that he lived a life of false pretense from the moment he began crafting his public persona as a nice, "unthreatening" black guy. The backdrop at the time being the Watts riots in the 60's and the burgeoning black liberation movement which other prominent black athletes were a part of, but Simpson rejected, and that angle is explored in the film. He seemed to reject his own blackness in favor of some other in-between category as he absorbed himself into wealthy, white social circles. "I'm not black, I'm O.J." sums it up succinctly. Of course, behind the cultivated nice guy image he was a brutal, violent maniac who should never have walked the streets again after he surrendered to police in his driveway. The entire saga is an incredible, sickening tragedy. It's a uniquely Los Angeles horror story in a way, but more than anything, it's a merciless indictment of our collective failures as a society. The film is almost 8 hours, and I didn't want it to end, despite it being really depressing. It's a staggering piece of journalism, and art. I woke up this morning haunted by it.
    • As told to me by an Italian called Claudio, with his own wine and a corking machine (hand operated) in his cellar - Corks are usually sealed with a metal or plastic shrink wrapper over the top to stop air sneaking past the cork. Ageing occurs from the air already in the cork and /or bottle itself and from contact with the cork. His wine was terrific, but natural cork tree bark corks can spoil or taint the wine. Screw tops and those plastic corks are airtight, but obviously don't contain any air at all and have become more commonplace because of cost and because of consistency. But cork forests, mostly in Portugal are an absolute wildlife heaven. If they're lost there's a lot of diversity going to disappear.
    • Brilliant, thank you… you make it look so easy… wish the club would see sense… Still can’t believe they are choosing to stick with pale blue and yellow… in ANY form… 🤦‍♂️    Every single one of those is better than that drop shadowed abomination!   Welcome btw!
    • If not for the injuries… might have happened this season 😉 😜 🤣 Some excellent signings and I don’t see why we can’t challenge in the near future… obv a lot would have to go our way… but having Liverpool going through a transition and Chelsea’s continued slump… why rule it out…? We have blown City and Arsenal away this season… even with a depleted team… But… I prefer to be patient and realistic 😆
    • That number posted is 98% capacity.  Which is excellent frankly.
    • Dragon Rouge have got an excellent reputation with some big organisations - they did PSG for example. I don't think they'll have found the controls on this project any more restrictive than on most things they do - just from more directions.
    • Earlier poster either here or in another thread mentioned a great point that I'd love to see us implement.  If AVFC secure UCL wouldn't we be allowed to have the Star above the badge since we've won it before?  That would help solve some of the design issues with trying to cram it into our shield/badge etc etc. I'd like to see that frankly.  Could that be a reason for the delay in the new badge release?  Seeing if we secure UCL?  Food for thought...  UTV
    • Well we will never know … Dragon Rogue are considered the go to agency …
