bromsgrove_avfc Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Its obvious most of us feel we need a CB and it looks like DOL is looking for one. I was just wondering what standard everbody felt we should be looking for. Should we be replacing on of our current first choices and if so who or just a squad player better than we have to offer better competition?
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Laursen has had enough injury problems and was very tired at the end of the game yesterday. Others have seen him rubbing his knee halfway through. He and ridgewell should be 2nd choice, then Cahill.
nobbysmate Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 yep, we shouldn't be playing laursen unless we have to i reckon (by that i mean as a 3rd choice centre back), as fielding a blatantly unfit centre back in the prem is just no good
theboyangel Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 What we need is a player who can cover for both Laursen and Samuel, a left footed quick strong player - i'd go for O'Shea if he were available
wazzap24 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I would say one that is on par with our first choice partnership, if not even better.
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I agree with what has been said by DOL in that he prefers a player to stick to one position and so want us to have a centre back pairing that was as solid as the Ugo & Southgate one. The right player to complement Mellberg, plus a left back for good measure, and were sorted!
avfcinwales Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Laursen, despite his Milan pedigree, is the weak link, his injured knee alone makes his chances of being fully fit unlikely, and a full season impossible. I'd piss on the Blues and try for Upson.
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Don't ever want us buy or sign anyone from them. Hate it. God knows how the Scouse do it all the time. and Andy Cole to Man City, it's like Andy Johnson to Villa. No tar! Agree about Laursen though, looked good enough sometime end last season but yet to prove himself.
drat01 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 yep, we shouldn't be playing laursen unless we have to i reckon (by that i mean as a 3rd choice centre back), as fielding a blatantly unfit centre back in the prem is just no goodand was that based on yesterday's performance where he looked pretty fit?
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 and was that based on yesterday's performance where he looked pretty fit? He did? I didn't see him very fit. he was rubbing his knee apparently as if in pain, was really blowing in the last 20 mins, hands on hips, and his injury record speaks for itself.
drat01 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 oliv - Mellberg was puffing and panting, as was McCann and Davis looked like Paula Ratcliffe towards the end
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Suppose it could just be the first day n all. DOL did say that they had over-trained in the week. we'll see anyway, wouldn't mind a decent CB, if only to provide more competition for places.
nobbysmate Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 you don't SERIOUSLY think laursen's fit do u drat? he said himself only a few days ago that it's still not right!
drat01 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 A left footed CH that can cover at LB would be the ideal
villafan306 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 A left footed CH that can cover at LB would be the ideal Which is why we were after Distin
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Still think that versatility in a player can be to his detriment, look at Aaron Hughes at newcastle, was used in so many positions across the back that he never had the opportunity to cement a place.
drat01 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Oliv - this is Villa we are talking about where nearly all the players have to have a second position. Apparently Tommy is reserve coach driver
olivilla Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Perhaps, given Jlloyd's recent poor form, we should look at a brand new left back altogether. There is (unlikely) talk of Wayne Bridge, but perhaps someone fresh could sort it out.
villafan306 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Bridge on loan could be a possibility but IMO we need a specialist left back who can cover at CB. Phil Neville would have been perfect but not at £3.5million.
