Giants may give Plaxico a 2nd shot

By STEVE SERBY

Last Updated: 4:15 AM, January 4, 2011

Plaxico Burress is scheduled to be released from the upstate Oneida Correctional Facility on June 6 -- in time for training camp, if there is no NFL lockout -- and there is growing support within the Giants organization to bring him back and give him a second chance.

Co-owner Steve Tisch already is on record as championing the troubled wide receiver's cause, and considers him a dear friend. Co-owner John Mara feels strongly that Burress has paid his debt to society. General manager Jerry Reese yesterday said the Giants would investigate a possible Plaxico II.

Now defensive captain Justin Tuck has told The Post he, too, would welcome Burress back.

"I know that he's paid his debt to society, and I think he's overpaid his debt to society," Tuck said.

"Yeah, I would love to see him back. We've all seen how the Mike Vick situation has played out. And we all know that Plaxico is one of the most talented wide receivers to ever play this game."

Burress, who will turn 34 in August, is serving a two-year sentence on weapons-possession and reckless-endangerment charges stemming from the infamous November 2008 nightclub incident in which he shot himself in the leg.

"Whether he's here, or wherever he comes back, he's gonna come back with a chip on his shoulder trying to prove a point," Tuck said. "So, as a defensive player, I would much rather that guy be on our team than not. And plus, he's a difference-maker. I would love to see him back."

Tuck was asked if he would lobby for Burress.

"If my owner came and asked me what I thought, I would tell him exactly what I just told you," Tuck said.

Eli Manning has been hampered by not having a red-zone threat like the 6-foot-5 Burress. Coach Tom Coughlin would have to sit down with Burress and be convinced he would not disrupt the team concept Coughlin has built.

"We investigate everything," Reese said. "When that situation arises, we will investigate that."

First of all, thanks to BBI posters who worked on the playoff scenarios this year and helped me to try to put some posts together.

I've seen it written in a few places that the Giants were eliminated because they lost to Green Bay head to head. That is not the reason the Giants lost the tiebreaker for the 6th seed. The real reason the giants lost the tiebreak is a little more subtle and shows the different levels of achievement represented by the three 10-6 teams in the NFC.

Because Tampa also finished 10-6, the head-to-head result between the Giants and Green Bay was not applicable to breaking the 3 way tie - because Tampa and Green Bay did not play each other. (In a 3 way tie, H to H is only applied if one team beat the other two or one team lost to the other two.) All three teams finished 8-4 in the conference and there were not enough common opponents. So it went to strength of victory and this is how it looked:

Green Bay beat the following teams:

PHIL 10 wins total

BUF 4

DET 6

MINN 6

NYJ 11

DAL 6

MINN 6

SF 6

NYG 10

CHI 11

========

76 wins total

The Giants beat the following teams:

WAS 6

CAR 2

HOU 6

JACK 8

CHI 11

DAL 6

DET 6

SEA 7

MINN 6

WAS 6

============

64 wins total

and Tampa Bay:

CLE 5

CAR 2

CAR 2

CIN 4

STL 7

ARI 5

SF 6

WAS 6

SEA 7

NO 11

===================

Total 55 wins total

It's easy to see how strong of a 10-6 the Pack had, with the Giants being relatively weak and Tampa Bay being really weak (although they did beat the saints in their last game). If the Giants had beaten better teams, they would have taken this tiebreaker even with a loss to GB.

But GB basically had the SOV wrapped up a couple of weeks in advance (because to get to 10-6 they had to beat the Giants and CHI).

  • 1 month later...

Giants have resigned DJ Ware and Domenik Hixon, they also tendered Bradshaw at 1st and 3rd rounder level which might not mean anything at all depending on the outcome of the CBA negotiations which are due to expire tonight.

Coughlin also recently said that Jacobs needs to see more of the ball - i concur. He also commented that he was not sure if there would be any interest from the Giants in Plax - do not concur.

Giants re-sign returners Hixon, Reynaud, tender nine

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Return specialists Domenik Hixon and Darius Reynaud have signed contract extensions with the New York Giants.

With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire at the end of the day, the Giants also announced Thursday that nine other players were tendered contract offers.

Defensive linemen Mathias Kiwanuka, Barry Cofield and Dave Tollefson, wide receiver Steve Smith, running back Ahmad Bradshaw, tight end Kevin Boss and offensive lineman Kevin Boothe were tendered one-year contracts as restricted free agents.

Boss, Bradshaw, Cofield, and Tollefson received second-round tenders. Boothe, Kiwanuka and Smith each received an original round tender.

The Giants also have tendered one-year contracts to tight end-fullback Bear Pascoe and offensive lineman Jamon Meredith as exclusive-rights players.

Hixon, who also plays wide receiver, missed all of last season after tearing a knee ligament during a June 15 practice at New Meadowlands Stadium.

"I thank God and I feel very blessed that I have an opportunity to come back to the New York Giants," Hixon said Thursday from his home near Columbus, Ohio. "That's what I wanted. I love the New York Giants and being in New Jersey. It's been a blast. They have a great coaching staff and ownership and a team that I like. I really wanted to come back, and I'm glad we were able to work something out."

Hixon set Giants season records in 2009 with 57 kickoff returns for 1,291 yards, a 22.6-yard average. He also led the team with a 15.1-yard average on 17 punt returns, including a 79-yard touchdown. Hixon ranks seventh in Giants history with 1,692 kickoff-return yards and ninth with 498 punt-return yards.

Without Hixon last season, the Giants finished 31st in the NFL in both punt returns (a 6.1-yard average) and kickoff returns (19.0).

"That was one of the most devastating things about the injury," Hixon said. "The guys on the special-teams units were just getting used to each other, and we ended on a real good note the year before. We thought we'd continue to build up. I feel we'll keep on doing that and pick up where we left off a couple of years ago."

Hixon has started 10 of his 42 games with the Giants. He has 59 career catches for 788 yards and three touchdowns.

Acquired with backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels in a Sept. 3 trade with the Minnesota Vikings, Reynaud played in nine games, averaging 5.7 yards on punt returns and 18.4 yards on 21 kickoff returns.

The extension for the CBA has been extended by 24 hours, hopefully its a sign that a deal is close and then we can go about the offseason as normal i.e. free agency soon!

Brandon Jacobs would consider a “fair” pay cut

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 3, 2011, 7:08 PM EST

B. Jacobs2

Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at the Combine that he wanted to get running back Brandon Jacobs the ball more in 2011. So would Jacobs be willing to do more work for less money?

Jacobs’ answer to ESPNNewYork.com’s Ohm Youngmisuk was surprising.

“Nothing is going to happen until the CBA stuff gets done,” Jacobs said. “And if they happen to ask to take the pay cut and it is an unnecessary amount, then absolutely not. But other than that, if it is something that can be done, then yes, then whatever is going to get the team going and winning.

“But once you take off an astronomical amount, that is not going to happen. I’d be open to it as long as it is fair to me.”

Jacobs is due $4.65 million next season. The team would love to sign Ahmad Bradshaw and lower Jacobs’ contract number. They could also draft a rookie to pair with Jacobs.

Either way, it sounds like there is enough mutual interest here in working something out to bring Jacobs back. Perhaps Jacobs didn’t need to say goodbye, after all.

He hasnt made a good decision since deciding to quit half way through the season and then call out his old team mate and coach who then went on to win the Super Bowl the first year he wasnt on the team. He should be revered by all Giants fans but most dont like the guy now, me included. He is a walking talking example of how to completely ruin your once proud legacy.

AP talked shi about him coming back (rightfully so!) and then Tiki's agent said something along the lines of "aside from the most sought after and prestigious achivement available in the whole of pro-football AP's craeer pales in comparison to Tiki's as a Giant". Yes id much rather lots of stats, no leadership, no heart and no ring.....

Giants won’t ask for money from season ticket holders until lockout ends

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 16, 2011, 4:36 PM EDT

Jonathan Tisch, John Mara, Woody Johnson

There’s a reason why the Mara and Tisch families are so beloved by Giants fans. They get it.

They are also in good enough financial standing to take a step that no other NFL team we know of has taken this offseason.

Speaking with Mike Francessa on WFAN Wednesday, owner John Mara says that Giants season ticket holders won’t have to pay any money to them until there is a new collective bargaining agreement. In addition, Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger reports the Giants won’t raise ticket prices this year.

It’s a great gesture by the Giants that shows how teams have options in how they treat fans during the lockout. Other teams say they are confident there will be fooball; this shows the Giants are confident there will be football.

The move could put a little pressure on other teams around the league to adopt similar policies, although many teams probably couldn’t afford to.

If nothing else, the Giants know the move will look good in comparison to the Jets’ ticket plans.

UPDATE: The closest plan we can find to the Giants: The Panthers are only requiring 10% down and the other 90% after a new CBA is reached. On the other side of the spectrum: The Patriots require full payment on season tickets by March 31.

The lockout sucks, this is usually my favourite part of the offseason, free agency and the lead up to the draft. Thank **** the draft hasn't been canned also!

Tuck plans to talk to Asomugha about joining Giants: report

Though the NFL lockout prevents teams from talking to players, it won’t stop Justin Tuck from doing some recruiting.

The Giants defensive end said Tuesday night he plans on talking to Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha about coming to New York.

"New York City is the place to be and that draws on its own, and plus we are a team that hasn't gotten over the [hump] and a player like him would definitely help do so," Tuck told ESPN.com.

The Jets also could be interested in Asomugha; he and Darrelle Revis are friends and have spoken in the past about joining forces. But the Jets have several free agents that they may look to re-sign, including another cornerback Antonio Cromartie, before Asomugha becomes an issue.

Asomugha’s Raiders contract was voided when he failed to reach certain incentives this past season.

The Jets and Giants won’t be alone; Asomugha will be one of the targeted free agents once a collective bargaining is reached. Tuck said he expects a labor deal to get done, but not right away.

"Come July, come August, there will be a lot of scratching of heads and biting of teeth if we don't have a deal done," said Tuck, who was talking up his R.U.S.H. For Literacy charity. "Hopefully cooler heads prevail and I will find myself chasing some quarterbacks in September."

Tuck also talked about the Giants bringing back Mathias Kiwanuka, who missed all but three games of last season with a herniated disc. Kiwanuka has been cleared to play, but his contract with the Giants is up.

"[Kiwanuka] says he is healthy, been healthy," said Tuck, who spoke with Kiwanuka recently, according to the report.

"This whole lockout puts [a question mark] on where he is going to stand as far as contract-wise. He looks good and has been working out. I am definitely going to talk to the powers that be, but I know they want him back. He is one of those players you want to make sure you get him back in a Giants uniform."

This needs to happen, end the lockout ffs!
