  1. Wot he said. Barnsley first choice, easy. Then Baggies 'cos some of my mates support 'em. No opinion on Cardiff. Detest Portsmouth.

Ahh...Follett. I liked Code to Zero and The Third Twin. He uses plenty of expletives though ... This is the first one of his I've read, and of course it's totally unlike the rest of his stuff, being mediaeval and all that. It's OK so far, but a bit erm, unchallenging. Don't know if I'll finish it. You shoud try reading The Third Twin. Plenty of twists and turns in the plot. As good as Ludlum at his best. That's a compliment, is it? Not my sort of thing, really.

  4. Oh too easy. I can see what you're getting at, but I've got most of that stuff, and I think that Bruckner < Mahler, Holst < RVW and Prokofiev < Shostakovich. No, I was interested in some of the much less-well known stuff you've been mentioning. Joubert? Wellesz? Parry? (I know his choral stuff, but not the symphonies).
  5. Still having that crucial first dump were you? 8) I'm listening to John Joubert's 1st Symphony, which isn't a song either. You seem to be listening to a lot of obscure (to my ears, anyway) classical stuff. Given that my faves are Mahler, Vaughan Williams and Shostakovich, do you have any recommendations?

OK, since we're obviously doing this all over again, I currently have the following "on the go": Ken Follett: Pillars Of The Earth Justin Cartwright: The Song Before It Is Sung Chris Bayly/T. N. Harper: Forgotten Armies (Britain's Asian Empire and the War with Japan) James A. Goodson: Tumult In The Clouds

Existing threads: Here and here and here and here and probably several others.
  8. Seriously? Yes, I was maybe a gram under though or did you mean my posts read like those of a 10 yo :? Ah. The usual abbreviation is (anag.) Or, to put it another way: Unattainable Gab is a Euro Shiv.
  9. Which version? "Original" Band of Gypsies? Fillmore East? IoW?
  10. I'm the oldest so far. Until OldFart gets here.
  11. Good thing the music is fantastic! Yes, I agree, it's an excellent track, despite the lyrics.
  12. David Bowie - contender for some of the worst lyrics ever: It's on America's tortured brow That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow. Now the workers have struck for fame 'Cause Lennon's on sale again. See the mice in their million hordes From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads. Rule Britannia is out of bounds To my mother, my dog, and clowns, But the film is a sadd'ning bore 'Cause I wrote it ten times or more. It's about to be writ again Sorry, but that is terrible.
  13. Good call. Me: Fat Old Sun on that Floyd website mentioned elsewhere on this page.
  14. "The Premier League is the greatest league the world has ever known". David "I am a rocket polisher" Gold
  15. I'd be happy to see the Geordies win the Premiership if that guaranteed the noses relegation. Fortunately, that won't be necssary.
  16. I've been making this comparison for ages. They DO remind me of the Saunders team. BUT. The days when you could win the league with 14 players are over.
  17. Allman Brothers Band - In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.
  18. Most authorities cite it as an answer to both songs... Interestingly enough Neil Young has stated that he regards Sweet Home Alabama as a better song than either Alabama or Southern Man... Correct. And he's been known to play it live himself.
