  1. This is from the Player Ratings from Birmingham Mail. I don’t think he played his best but I thought he played like a captain last night. I think this thread is at the stage where, even if he scored a hat trick every week, he would still be abused.

Looked like a man on a mission moments in, crunching into Walker-Peters on a number of occasions as he looked to find some momentum. Kept demanding more from his teammates whenever it went flat. Terrier-like as we entered the final ten minutes and got the home crowd up with some purposeful play and wrestled Djenepo to the ground, much to the delight of the Villa faithful. Looked much more like the John McGinn of old tonight, it has to be said. Drove his troops to the very end. A real contender for man of the match with Mings just pipping him. Strong.

    The duality of John.

To be honest, after the first 20 minutes, where I thought he played very well, he was pathetic. I started following Villa from afar here in Scotland because of McGinn but I am desperate for him to be dropped. He is not being managed properly in my opinion. He has been struggling for months and needs taken out the firing line. I also agree with other posters saying he looks unfit. He looks too muscular in the legs and not as mobile as I remember him. Looks more like a weightlifter than a footballer at the moment. Get him dropped, get him on a different fitness regime and watch him go. There is a player still in there.

  3. I have posted on here before about Rangers and many Villa fans say that Rangers would struggle against Rotherham, Gillingham and teams like that because they are a diddy club playing in a diddy league. For Van Bronckhurst to get them to a Europa League Final and now Champions League beating times like Dortmund, Leipzig and PSV, suggests that the Dutchman is an amazing manager, managing a diddy club from a diddy league and doing so well, or the English lower divisions are amongst the best in the world. Certainly seems better manager to SG despite losing league to another diddy club in Celtic.

I was also going to mention this, pretty weird to keep him on the full 90 but take off Kamara & Luiz.

Probably took Kamara off because Bolton players were running by him with ease all night and he could only stop them by repeatedly fouling them. 7 fouls I counted before he was hauled off.

  5. I think there is a brilliant player in him but he is clearly a shadow of himself at the moment. I must admit, I don’t know how SG can’t see that. Drop him, bench him, get his appetite back for the fight and see where he goes. I certainly wouldn’t dismiss him. Playing terribly at moment but also managed terribly.

  6. This forum, seems to think McGinn was the weakest link last year and their appears to be a narrative that he is a bit of a clown and shouldn’t be anywhere near squad or an automatic starter. I don’t think that view is shared by others, outwith this thread. I would agree, there are some games he has been poor by his standards and I have been surprised he has stayed on. That being said, I still think he is one of the most important players in the team and deserves the manager’s confidence as much as anyone in the team.

I'm in the minority (at least on here) on this for two reasons:

1: In my option, the captain should always be a CM (as they're right in the middle of everything)

2: I think Gerrard, one of the greatest captains in the history of the league, is probably better placed than any of us to decide who is, or isn't, captain material.

Besides, he can always take it off him if it's not working out.

I mean, I know SG one of England’s greatest ever midfielders, won European Champions League etc but what really does he know about football. We on this forum clearly have better judgement than him. I fully agree that McGinn, lovely guy that he is, should be in charge of organising the quiz nights or dressing up as a chicken to lighten the mood of the squad.

Sure he could be but given they’ve recently landed back from an 18 hour flight from oz I’d be surprised if his first thought would be to hit the West End. Footballers are an odd breed though so who knows.

My mate, who knows Tommy Jordan, Communication Director, just contacted him and confirmed that SJM left Australia on much earlier flight and would have been in London. I am gutted I never made every effort to extricate myself from busy Italian restaurant and get a wee photo. Incredibly, we were talking to a Tottenham fan and his wife 10 mins earlier and he asked my 10 year old son which English team he supported. He said Aston Villa because of SJM. Short time later, my daughter shouts “there’s Andy Robertson” excitedly and I am looking out for him. She points him out and I only got his side view but was 99% sure it was SJM. She just got her soccer legends mixed up. He was only walking about, with what appeared to be 2 females in his company. I may never get over this missed opportunity and to tell him of this startling coincidence.

  9. Anyone know if SJM is sightseeing in London. I am in Little Italy at Leicester Square and I am convinced he has just walked by in company of 2 females. I was boxed in so couldn’t run out after him to get a photo with him and my boy.

Interesting trip to Armenia for him, scored and got a headbutt

I havent seen the headbutt but he is getting slaughtered on Twatter for going down too easily

I love SJM but any player going down like that, in my eyes, is embarrassing. Slight movement towards him, minimal contact and down he went like he was hit by a rampaging wildebeest.

Some were  saying it for the game against Ukraine...........he'll forever be a legend at Easter Road and adored by 99% of Hibs fans.

Sorry if I didn't make that clear , however he was poor the other night !  .............as were several others☹️

Apologies. I agree with that. Thought he was very poor against Ukraine. Did not turn up. More like himself tonight.

He was at his brothers, Paul , wedding up here last week.

Even on the Hibs forum they were saying he was a waste of a jersey last night...........and these are the same who claim he will get a multi million pound move away from Villa very soon ,so we can get our percentage of the sell on fee 😉

Hibs fans were saying John McGinn was a waste of jersey. Lol. Were the same people saying that the earth is flat.
