  1. Brentford missed some really good chances this game
  2. Both Chelsea and Tottenham seem to end up in games where there are loads of chances at both ends. If Chelsea could actually finish, they'd be much higher up the table

    Unai Emery

Er have you not watched us over the last 15 months?
  4. To be fair to Unai, I understood the proud comment to be a reflection on the overall unbeaten (and mainly winning) run we've had at home, now its come to an end, rather than specific to last night. And i think in that context it was fair enough. Of more interest to me was his comments about how both sides setup to play the same way as they'd done when we beat them 3-0 last year, with the difference this time being we lost out more in individual duels and moments. I think recently we have had too many players displaying too many sloppy tendencies - there's the obvious stuff like passing the ball straight to opposition players despite looking straight at them, but there's lots of other little more subtle things that seem to have crept in to individual players games. For example, balls are being played into players, but the receiver is not showing well enough for the ball and making the movement towards the ball that is needed to separate from the defender. Even if they do get it and are able to shield it, they are wanting too long before moving it on, and consequently running into multiple players and losing it or missing the chance for the pass. All of our midfield and starting forwards were guilty of that last night; in contrast Bailey when he came on wanted the ball constantly, and put in the effort to make himself available for it, and suddenly we got going as a team. Then you've got the constant bad decisions being made like shooting when the pass/cross was on or vice versa. Earlier in the season we had the slow build up play, but then we would quickly go through the gears with some much slicker movement and passing, players would make that movement to separate themselves from defenders. There was intent both on and off the ball, and good decision making, but that seems to have disappeared for the most part.
  5. Our tactics are not unique and we've been playing the high line in particular for nearly 12 months. Teams haven't suddenly had an ephinany half way through the season and gone 'if we try this we'll find villa out'. We've played teams like Luton, West Ham and Fulham who showed little inclination to do anything else but sit back and hit on the counter, and stuck at least 3 past each. However all systems can be beaten if they are not well implemented. And that is what we are seeing now. Bad decisions, sloppy passing, and moving the ball too slow, which was not the case earlier in the season. Too many players are losing individual battles as well.
  6. There were a couple of instances early on that stood out. Both times the ball went into McGinn, and the first one he held on too long and was easily robbed setting newcastle on a counter. Second time he did roll the newcastle player, but then passed it straight out of play. Not necessarily a criticism of McGinn, but it summed up the sloppiness of us for most of that game
  7. The first 65 mins was probably the most disgraceful effort we've put in all season. Lost the ball cheaply repeatedly, kept passing straight to them or out of play, 1-11 we just didn't look bothered. 1st goal we had two players there and still the Newcastle player barged past them both to get to the ball. He simply just wanted it more. Livened up with Bailey and no surprise that when we pushed the pace we pushed them right back, but the slight offside goal killed all momentum for us.
  8. Hmm, actually playing with a bit of intensity and Newcastle can't handle it. Shame we spent the first 65 mins strolling around and making no effort to compete
  9. Absolutely atrocious Again, Newcastle players just stronger on the ball, faster running, and making the effort to get on the end of the cross
  10. Again Konsa and Luiz letting the ball past on that corner
  11. 2nd goal was a bit unlucky with the deflection onto the bar then it hitting Emi's back and sitting perfectly for the tap in But the first was just pure lack of effort - we had both Luiz and Konsa there and the Newcastle player barged past them both to get the ball. Summed up the half, just beaten in 1 on 1 battles all over the pitch. Unfortunately we can't hook all of those not pulling their weight otherwise we won't have a team left on the pitch
  12. Two set pieces Newcastle first to every loose ball Disgraceful effort off the back of a break
  13. Exactly what we've deserved for a pathetic, lazy performance 2nd best constantly Two of our players on the goal scorer and he beats both of them to the ball
  14. made the wrong decision every time we've got in their box
  15. Their biggest issue is that they've all lost individual battles every time, with the captain being the biggest culprit
  16. Some really poor passing so far, and losing the ball far too cheaply. McGinn has lost it several times already
  17. Nearly exactly a year ago we lost at home to Leicester, then followed that up with losses to Arsenal and Man City and lots of people were demanding we scrap any idea of trying to play out from the back, the high line etc with 'the players aren't good enough'. Didn't even take Unai more than a few months beyond that to get us successful at doing it. All systems have weakness that can be exploited, and can fall down if you have one or two players not on it in a particular game. But overall we are trending in the right direction. Next big step is being able to consistently deal with teams sitting back against us, will take some time to do that but if Unai and the team carry on as they have been we should get there.
  18. Yeah but on here anything less than steam rolling an opponent with Emi not having to make a single save is apparently poor. Check out any match thread and if we're not winning after 15 mins its a disaster. Man Utd was very poor, but games like Brentford, Everton, we actually overall dominated away to sides who had no interest in doing anything but playing for a point and injuring as many of our players as possible. Just lacking a cutting edge, which is not a suprise at the moment - Its nice teams are that fearful of us now, but its a tough thing to learn to play against. And it still happens to teams like Man City - last season we held them to a draw with Gerrard in charge, they drew at home to Everton, drew away at Forest, needed a KDB 25 yard freekick to beat leicester away, a last min pen to beat Fulham at home. Thats a team used to facing sides sitting deep and chock full of players bought for big money to unlock defences.
  19. Carrick appears to have been trying to sit and hit on the counter, but with a setup that has massive gaps between defenders, and no midfield cover except for Howson who keeps dropping in and then stepping up at the wrong time
  20. Bournemouth centre backs have been atrocious for both goals
  21. Results wise yes, although they were actually pretty good against Spurs and Man City, didnt get much luck. Sounds like they were very poor against Wolves though
  22. Cash is a moron Just talked to by the ref and 10 secs later he's flying into a ridiculous challenge
  23. He's somehow not taking chances to get forwards and also getting caught out of position at the back Both of Boros dangerous attacks he's in no mans land
