  1. So according to that article Martinez is on 500 Quid per week. Are you all blind?!

we all knew Wigan couldn't pay him as much as that and assumed it was a typo

As a matter of fact, according to that he's on even less, but is/was could find it hard not to be tempted by our 500 Quid per week offer! (Top notch journalism i tell you) :D

  2. Martinez would be a very poor appointment.

    Wigan under Steve Bruce

    2007/08 - 14th

    2008/09 - 11th

    Wigan under Roberto Martinez

    2009/10 - 16th

    2010/11 - 16th

    Steve Bruce > Roberto Martinez

I love these types of arguments, so you're trying to tell me that different seasons don't have many variables like teams around them strengthening, while they also lose playes and are not able to replace them. We finished 6th under Oleary one season then scrapped for relegation another, same with Leeds. So does this mean DOL>DOL??? People should try and look at things more objectively sometimes. Having said that I still want Ancellotti, but would also welcome Martinez.

Well you haffi luk pon di facts. And facts tell yu dat Steve Bruce mek Martinez luk like novice!

 . Weh di patois come from chief? 8)

  4. I personally like Martinez but it's slightly underwhelming, at the end of the day we have to support him. Apparently Randy wanted someone who could continue the work that Gh started and he might just be a good choice. I'm sure he could make good use of the academy also. It seems like GH backroom staff might also stay on. Give him a chance, and once again yes, he hasn't even been appointed yet.lol. There is no way in hell Randy would just simply go out and pursposely sign an underwhelming manager, I have faith they will do is best for the club as a whole.

  5. MM on H&V says that he thinks Bent is about to "have a meltdown"......not sure over what or why, but I don't like the sound of that at all...

No he simply meant the melton would be of "Bent type proportions". Referring to the meltdown when we signed Darren Bent! :winkold:

  6. Rafa is not many of our first choice, but some of the drivel posted about if he were to become our manager is laughable. He is a high profile manager with a top Cv, how deluded are us Villa fans? As someone said earlier, if the board listened to everything we said we would never appoint a manager! WAKE UP FFS!

  7. I'm beginning to warm to Martinez. All managers start somewhere. U can tell his players play for him and he plays it attractively. Maybe we should bring him in and give him time, see what he can do after a few years and give him the chance to work with some better class players. He could bring NZogbia and Figueroa and Rodellega with him.

This has been one of my shouts foe a while, if we can't get in one of the top, top men, then this would probably be my favoured option.

  8. Let the games begin....

Has everyone blatantly ignored the post I put up on page 22 with the Birmingham mail article of Darren Bent saying we should get Ancelloti? Idea

    Darren Bent: Let's get Carlo

DARREN Bent has excitedly thrown his full support behind Villa’s bold pursuit of Carlo Ancelotti after receiving a ringing endorsement from Chelsea’s stars.

Bent believes Randy Lerner would be making a major statement about the club’s ambitions if he can tempt the sacked Stamford Bridge boss to Villa.

John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole highly recommended Ancelotti to Bent after the record signing sounded them out during England duty over the weekend.

Bent regards Villa as a “humongous” football club with every right to chase the Italian, a four-times European Cup winner as player and manager with AC Milan.

Lerner made contact with Ancelotti’s representatives last week and is waiting for a definitive response about the 51-year-old’s feeling about Villa’s vacancy.

Bent’s £18-24 million signing had an uplifting effect in January and he reckons landing a big-name boss could restore the feelgood factor this summer.

Chelsea’s England stars had nothing but praise for Ancelotti, who was sacked last month despite winning a league and cup double in his first season a year ago.

“I have spoken to a couple of the Chelsea guys and they loved him,” said Bent.

“They thought he was brilliant and if he’s a good coach that’s only going to help.

“The Chelsea boys have just said he’s brilliant. Ashley Cole said to me that he loved him. He said he’s a really, really good manager.

“Obviously when you’re at a club like that you don’t produce the goods sometimes.

“But, even if it’s just for one season, you get the bullet.

“It just depends on whether or not we can get Ancelotti, but if we do get him everyone will be excited about the way forward.

“People might think Aston Villa Football Club can’t get these kind of managers, but at the end of the day Villa is a massive football club – it’s humongous.

“If we can go out and get Ancelotti it shows the capabilities of the club and the direction the club’s going in. It’s exciting to be part of that.”

Bent has spent much of the past week eagerly scouring media reports for an update on the manager situation since news of Gerard Houllier’s departure broke.

The 27-year-old is now off on holiday to Portugal and America for most of June after ending his eventful season playing in England’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

And Bent has called on the Villa Park faithful to give the new manager their backing and patience whether it is Ancelotti or another candidate.

“Every day I am checking the news and speaking to people to see who it’s going to be, but you just don’t know who it’s going to be,” he added.

“Mark Hughes was supposed to be in the running, but he has gone out now and I couldn’t tell you who it’s going to be.

“I couldn’t even tell you who is in the frame now because it’s so up in the air.

“I’m sure whoever the new manager is the fans will give him time.

“It’s a big, big job to take and I’m sure the fans will be behind him whoever he is.

  10. Everyone has a price, and I would think Downing's would be abnormally high considering the circumstances. If someone wants to pay it, take the money and reinvest it. He had a nice season but is not exactly irreplaceable. That said, the new manager should be making these decisions.

anything above doubling our money and i'd probably be happy enough. if we ended up getting close to £50m for ash and downing it'd be great business. another £15-20m on sales and £30-40m from randy in and the new man has enough money to put a whole team together

That sounds like a plan!!

It certainly does, and may even be in Randy and the boards thinking. Lowering the wage bill whilst being able to allow a top manager (Carlo?) a real "Warchest" to spearhead a new era. Players who haven't gone stale on the club and all wanting to fight for the cause!

  11. I actually chose Martinez this time. Young manager, seems a good bloke and would be well driven to start a legacy with more substancial backing than he is used to. On paper though I feel Rafa would be the best out of that list. For some reason I just don't see all the fuss about Moyes.

  12. I'm warming to the idea of Martinez, and even Benitez, as it doesn't seem like Ancellotti is going to happen. Martinez really seems like a good, passionate manager, is young and has a lot of potential, always positive and his sides play attractive football. (Could bring Rodallega along perhaps). Also, no matter how much people hate Benitez the fact of the matter is that he is a first class manager. Hughes and Moyes are highly uninspiring for me, Moyes even moreso, if i had to choose between the two though it would be Hughes.

  13. Fair enough, either way it would possibly be the biggest signing we make this summer, just based on his reputation and pulling power alone. I have nothing again GED but I really don't think he should continue, football is not worth him dying for.
