The Squad That Failed: Goalkeeper Review

This is an ongoing blog which will look at each area of Aston Villa’s squad of players that are contracted to the club at the end of the 2016 season. The first post will go through all the Goalkeepers at the club, looking at whether the club should attempt to keep them on, or try to offload them out of the club. After a season of failure, following years of near misses, it is easy to suggest that the entire squad should be ripped up, so the aim is to look objectively at every player. 1 - Br

    • Really impressed by Serie A lately. Seems to me the quality is big improvement over last year. So many cool players! Taty. Scamacca. Chiesa. Ivanovic? Spelling. 😬
    • Seems to happen a lot at some clubs - Sheffield United a good example. Honest question: Are we any better? That is, if we are 3-0 down at home by halftime, do we leave Villa park half empty?
    • You could at times play Morgan at 10 and then JJ / Buendia and Diaby/ Bailey either side of him with Ollie / Jhon up front.  Or in a 433 JJ left mid and Morgan left attack. That would be frightening to be fair as they could easily swap positions .
    • Hmm... interesting take. What I heard was this: "Some junior players were in first class, and some first team players were in economy." Why? Why not all in the same class? If I was Terry, I'd be annoyed too. Had AVB made them all fly economy, then that's that.
    • He’s got another season or two for us yet. Has been absolutely vital since Kamara’s injury and he’s worth his weight in gold at the moment.
    • With all the talks about player sales, and who some think weay need to sell etc. Have we discussed Tielemans? We did sign him on a free, and he is probably worth good money, also potentially someone we can replace cheaper? Not saying I want him sold by any stretch, but as we know, these things go in order of value/age Vs contribution and replaceability etc.
    • I think they could be on the pitch together and wreak havoc if I'm honest, they are slightly different. I also think some people have forgotten how good JJ is at his best, due to his prolonged absence and lack of being able to get there this season. Doesn't always have to be either/or. Worst case, we have two very good players who are strong, quick and athletic.
    • Not sure how to add a twitter post but interesting commentary on the above typography -  https://x.com/BoskoBoot/status/1783613606426489227
    • There’s a new god in town !!!
    • Unless I just have claret & blue specs welded to my face…he WAS alright when he was with us, wasn’t he? In terms of being a good character. I can’t recall anything where I’d think “Oh Terry, you prick…”.
