It's standard for US sportscasters to wear those in the booth (though not the studio people, which would be more analogous to the BBC presenters). It actually kind of struck me as interesting when I saw MOTD and Fanzone commentators using the handheld mics (which in standard US usage only get trotted out for the pre-game bit).
