  1. What an afternoon! Nearly home and still smiling. Go on Unai, what a way to start by putting that awful h2h record to bed!

Everybody played well today but gave MOTM to Watkins - back to his best today. Bailey was electric too.

My favourite moment was the Nanny McPhee masterclass that was Emi getting involved in the free kick set up

Going on Thursday night, bring it on Unai, let’s get the double over these insufferable rocket polishers!

The longest contract in history to go with the longest unveiling in history

Not sure why he’s at Bodymoor, they need to fly him out to Craig Butler’s shed

  4. Sad to see Athletic writers pick their England squads, nobody selects Mings. Only one even mentions him (Michael Cox), who says he’s gone back to the 26 man Euros squad and left out anyone who’s not played enough or not played well enough since (Calvert Lewin, Sancho, Johnstone and Mings). What?! In what world has Maguire played ‘well enough’ since then but Mings hasn’t? Fair enough if you don’t want to pick him but don’t come up with ridiculous things like that!

Everyone will obsess over who has had a good couple of weeks, but Gareth Southgate’s squad should be similar to the one from 18 months ago, when England nearly won the European Championship.

Newcastle twitter admin adding salt in the wounds by posting a pic from the game with the caption 'Sob on the Tyne'. They seemed to have had this one circled from before. Ah well.

In their best run of form in 25 years but still have the Holte End living rent free in their heads.

  6. Hope everyone else enjoyed the Newcastle United love in down those pesky rivers this afternoon, sickening! Thought first half was pretty even but then we capitulated. Danks breaks even and while it’s always rubbish to lose 4-0, today definitely felt like a Nether Zone performance. Looking forward to seeing what Unai brings next weekend!

Was this one already mid-week? Looks like Leeds in the middle of January will be our first 3pm k-o.

It was originally Jan 2nd 3pm (bank hol).

Nobody ever wants to leave Villa Park after a glorious win. Boxing-day or not.

Or perhaps you are more worried about Blues fans outside or drinking in town.

But seriously, I get your point. It is a balance between meeting the requirements of an international fanbase and the local bread-and-butter fans.

No trains on Boxing Day is the real issue

Can he get his messages and instructions across as effective in English as he can in his mother tongue.

That will be his biggest challenge.

Absolute non-issue. For one, he can speak the language fluently. For another, he’s likely to have a captain or VC in Emi Martinez who can translate where necessary (I don’t think he’ll need to).

  10. Brilliant afternoon at VP. I had Covid when we beat Soton in March so it’s my best match there since Everton under Deano (Bailey goal).

Huge respect to Danks, who I’ll admit I thought should’ve gone the other day too (sweet humble pie!). Took the shackles off and picked a sensible formation. Voted Dendoncker MOTM as I thought he did exactly what he needed to which in turn unlocked the sort of performance we know Dougie is capable of. Big shout out to Dougie for the run to defend their breakaway from his own corner late on.

Buendia has been waiting a year to be given that sort of role and he ran the game in the early stages. Ashley Young has taken Digne’s place in the team too! Unbelievable that he’s 37! Great to see Watkins off the wing, he looked more comfortable and put in a good performance which deserved the goal he (eventually!) got. That was the Danny Ings we thought we’d signed too. Also the Leon Bailey we thought we’d signed!

Just nice to show what we are capable of, especially to all those that thought Gerrard needed more time. Cheers Danksy, UTV

Older viewers will recall everyone thinking Kevin McDonald should get the job full time after a good post-M'ON start in 2010  and us then losing 6-0 to Newcastle, so not getting carried away, but for now: Thanks Danks - Thdanks

Our next game is away at Newcastle, who’ve we got down to take the Carew orbital penalty?
