  1. So you think a we are the same at 10 as we are as an adult? Let me ask a question as an answer to that question. Humour me. Do you think we all are radically different as adults from what we were say 20 years ago? Are humans capable of changing their 'core nature' for the lack of a better phrase? Yes im a very different person than i was 20 years ago. If you look at the Mary Bell case, she hasn't re-offended and has a family of her own, and she killed 2 younger kids on her own. We change more between the ages of 10 and 21 more than any point of our lifes, to say a 10 year old cannot change to me is ridiculous. I am not saying they CANNOT change. Change doesn't necessarily equate to reform. There are many more serial offenders who offended as juveniles than the ones who reformed and rejoined society as productive members. The stats are heavily weighed towards the former i.e juveniles are most likely to re offend as adults if let off lightly, and the especially violent ones are especially unpredictable. Can you give one decent justification as to what motivated these 'kids' to do what they did?I would understand if they murdered for food , money or just plain anger, but this?

  3. I don't believe such people are actually capable of changing. The sheer depravity of what they did and the way they did it is shocking , especially at that age!. I still find it hard to swallow , kids committing sadistic torture. They should be incarcerated for life and in far less comfortable circumstances.
  4. Choice or compulsion? I've been there , its not pleasant at all. Choice; got lots of work on. It's weird I'm actually not feeling tired anymore, just 'different'. Well, good luck then mate. It is about this time when your perception starts getting altered and reality subtly shifts. The physical need for sleep coupled with a mental determination to stay awake creates a weird state of being. :winkold:
  5. ^^ While there is a good case for Asimov being the best of the lot, when it comes to Hard sci fi , Arthur C Clarke was influential in the genre.
  6. i like Isaac Azimov the best, does he count in "best proper sci fi author of the modern generation"? By 'proper' I used a colloquial slang for 'Hard Sci fi' or 'Scientific sci fi'. I am no big expert on the subject(My ideas on Horror fiction , both modern and gothic is much more expansive) , but Clarke had much more'science' in his works , if you get my drift. That is not to say that Asimov wasn't a hard sci fi author , it is just that Clarke was all about the science and very little to no character development, while Asimov was much more meticulous and detailed in his plotting and setting. Being from a science background , I am more intrigued by the elaborate scientific justifications for fantastic futuristic technologies portrayed in these rather good novels. I appreciate both Authors but given a choice , I would take Clarke over Asimov. Many disagree , they are entitled to their opinion as I am to mine.

  8. I need to read for an hour at least before sleeping, its a habit since I was a kid. I am mostly into pop horror/scifi stuff, Stephen King being one of my favs. Incidentally, I am currently reading 'Insomnia' by King and it is far from his best , I must say. 'The Shining' and 'It' are still his best creations. Also an avid reader of Arthur C Clarke , the best proper sci fi author of the modern generation.

Don’t think sorry’s easily said Don’t try turning tables instead You’ve taken lots of chances before But I’m not gonna give anymore Don’t ask me That’s how it goes Cause part of me knows what you’re thinkin’ Don’t say words you’re gonna regret Don’t let the fire rush to your head I’ve heard the accusation before And I ain’t gonna take any more Believe me The sun in your eyes Made some of the lies worth believing I am the eye in the sky Looking at you I can read your mind I am the maker of rules Dealing with fools I can cheat you blind And I don’t need to see any more To know that I can read your mind, I can read your mind Alan Parsons Project-Eye In The Sky

  13. and yeah , just to add a little- You probably think I am shitting ya but I've seen Indian Cobras(naja naja), Banded Kraits , Saw scaled adders , Russels Viper , all on the front lawn near the Main Entrance. I have had snaklets falling from the hollow roof into the **** bathroom!
  14. Hell no , I used to live in Bangalore .. My dad works as a manager in a Tea Plantation in Assam(North eastern state in India , heavily forested). It is basically a wild area with a huge bungalow(ours) and a few scattered quarters for the lower ranking execs. There is a village which is two kms away from the settlement and the factory is further out. So Leopards are quite common in that area. I even have an old pic of me holding a cute Leopard cub(Mom had apparently abandoned him), it was later released into a national park nearby.Elephants are pretty common. They won 't harm you but they destroy all the plantation trying to reach the banana trees at the end of the patches. And a male in full swing is powerful enough to account for a lot of human casualties. I stay there for a couple of months every year. A couple of shot guns to scare off the Leopards, Bears(sloth) and Elephants and a Revolver is what we have :winkold: The one I am holding is an Old Single barrel shottie. It can punch a huge hole through a human torso , though!
  15. You got something against guns? I am sure when your verandah gets occasional nightly visitations from Leopards and your plantation has been trampled by Elephants thrice in the last year , you would understand the merits of having a gun(To scare off , not kill , the loud report sure works) :winkold:
