Just can't fathom why other clubs weren't doing everything to sign him, never any doubt that he's still at the top of his game. Get him purchased.

I don’t in any way think this situation is remote comparable, but this just relived all the disappointment of Ross Barkley after his positive start in the space of 10 seconds.

Mane and Salah are inside forwards. They aren't wingers. That's why they get so many goals.

Trent and Robertson provides the width

Surely you could accept though that their attributes are somewhat similar and therefore Bailey should be able to adapt fairly seemlessly?

Gerrard also wants our fullbacks to provide the width.

Gerrard don't really use wingers though.

It's the fullbacks who provides the width in his system.

Mane does okay in a similar system at Liverpool

I think he is far too ponderous on the ball. It gets him into trouble and it puts other in trouble. Cannot count the amount of times he has time on the ball only to release it when the closing player is virtually on him, to then play a stretched pass.

The other thing is, the longer he takes to release the ball the less space is available for his team mates who are receiving the ball.

If you’re talking about the first half, that was a structural/effort problem.

No one could play out from down back because there weren’t any options to go to.

For all his faults he can ping a ball. Though he seems to be utterly petrified of making a pass any other than to his CB.

The crowd are on him now and can see what he's doing. I'm sorry but he's captain of the club. He can't be hiding and passing the buck constantly.

Digne was on the overlap for days. Greenwood had no intention of even making token cover runs.

It took until it was 2-2 and the crowd was buzzing for Mings to make a pass to him.

You've got to show more. I've criticised his defending but this he can do...and he has to

What are you talking about? He started both of the goals we saw from the back, admittedly the second had a bit of luck but was trying to create from the back all second half.

Instead of who? I thought he had a good game but isn’t a starter for me just yet.

McGinn - I think the squad is getting to the point that we very a much need to be working on if you’ve got a spot and you perform, you keep your place kinda basis now, regardless of who’s coming back.

  7. Really offers something we’ve been missing in midfield - can really carry the ball but also control the tempo of the match which is something neither McGinn no Ramsay offer. He had a few wanders across field which opened up space and a few pivots through traffic which kept the defenders guessing.

    Should keep his place.

Ideal scenario. I know he has his fans but he is such a poor player, at least technically.

So many of our fans regard too many of our players (former ones too) as heroes but many of them simply don’t justify that status, imo.

The quality and consistency needs to be there, especially if we want to keep progressing.

Trez is just a shit player with good attitude and workrate imo. That may sound harsh to some but I’m just being honest from my POV. I don’t want us to carry poor players any more… I’ve run out of patience tbh. That pathetic dive didn’t help either.

Can appreciate what the likes of El Ghazi and Trez have done for us in the past (Anwar won us that POF) but we can’t and shouldn’t live on memories. It’s all about moving onwards and upwards, no more passengers…

What is a hero? These players play for our football team and really give a f*** about the jumper they play for are heroes in a way, aren’t they? Without Trez we’d probably be a newly promoted side this season, or worse, still kicking around in the championship.

Does this mean that Trez is one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen and should be kept on our books at all costs? No, but Trez has had heroic moments at Villa that have impacted the status of this club and all its fans for the better. Is that not heroic?

    I don’t even necessarily disagree with your critique, and I don’t think Trez will still be here at the end of this transfer window, but just on the future, past, present, and progress;

You cannot have progress into the future without the past. As you say, we should not live in the past but also cannot live in the future either, otherwise we not only lose sight of where we’ve come from, but we also lose many of the things that make this club so great. We need to acknowledge the past, respect the past and all the heroes who played their role, because that’s ultimately what will drive us into the future.

Hopefully with Coutinho and now Digne confirmed, we have better service for Watkins/Ings.  9 goals between them is pretty pathetic for £60m worth of forwards.

You do realise only 1 of them has been on the pitch at any one time for most of the season, right?

Got a weird vibe from this...he's not exactly endearing himself much.

So we are getting him because he fell out with Rafa and not because he WANTS to be here, ok great.

How are we supposed to understand this, be thankful?

    Why can’t the 2 co-exist?

Wanted to leave Everton because of Rafa and now wants to join us?

Got the news whilst having root canal surgery at the dentist.  It was the best part of the root canal surgery 👍

I hope for your sake your dentist wasn’t a Villa fan.

To be fair to sky sports they are probably putting together their Coutinho package, it's only just been announced so I expect more coverage by 11am

If they didn’t have a package prepped and ready to go in case he was sold then that just about reveals all you need to know about them.

But if he was in favour then we wouldn’t have a chance.  Players get out of favour for many reasons plus we aren’t talking about Joe Bloggs, we are talking about a player that cost £142m a few years back and played for three of the biggest teams in the world.  He looked good at Bayern, Barca hasn’t worked out…if he can’t play anymore then fair enough but that doesn’t seem the problem and we are several levels below those teams so he’d still be easily our best outfield player if he could hit third/fourth gear.

What are we basing this on? Has he played much for Barca recently?

I was trying to find some replays.

Yeah, all the dressing room are going to be really upset the 3rd most expensive ever player has joined the club temporarily and is paid a lot more than they are.

Comical some of the arguments against Coutinho I've read today.

You have to say it’s a risk though. It’s a huge jump in wages considering our existing payment structure for a player that’s only here temporarily and may not end up getting on the park a whole bunch (see Ross Barkley).

I've been saying this since Gerrard took over. We've dispensed with width and wide forwards to stay compact centrally however, it is having a knock on effect with our creativity and potential to counter attack teams. It also leaves us exposed when Cash or Targett bomb on. If Gerrard persists with this then we may as well get rid of the wide players, Targett and Cash and start again and get to FBs that are strong, quick and can cross the ball.

It stuck out like a sore thumb last night - so many occasions Target/Cash/Traore would be in a wide position and turn back and recycle the ball centrally.

The confusing bit is they were getting on the cusp of those wide positions but would always turn back - almost as though they’d been instructed not to cross.

  16. One thing I’ve notice over the last couple of weeks is that we literally have no width. Whenever players are in wide areas there’s a clear instruction not to put the ball in the box.

Not sure if this is a result of the style/formation we play now, but everything is so central and there doesn’t even seem to be any interplay on the wings.

Really? What gave it away? Do we have to write 'imo' after every sentence on a message board in order not to be mistakenly taken for an ITK?

Fwiw I also believe Purslow and Gerrard wouldn't have the snake back. To clarify - I haven't personally talked to them, just imo.

The original post very a much stated it as fact, I asked for clarification, clarification was given, what’s the problem?

I would like to think that both Purslow’s and Gerrard’s interests are in making Villa a better team. I would be disappointed if Purslow or anyone else let their personal feelings (if they even exist re JG) get in the way if JG wanted to return. The only criteria should be does he improve us and is he worth X expenditure.

When Ferran Torres wanted to leave, pep said that City never stand in the way of a player if he wants out.

I don’t know how true that is, but it would be very interesting if Grealish wanted to leave at the end of the season. I don’t know Jack and if it’s purely money that floats his boat then he’ll stay, but I could potentially see part of him wanting to come back and play for Villa sooner rather than later.

If there is a deal to be done, I wonder if we’d be interested?

I don’t think it will be the end of this season, but I don’t think the idea that he’ll return to Villa in the next 2-3 seasons if things stay the way they are is too outlandish, I couldn’t see any other CL clubs taking him.

Zaha is the one that sticks out who did something similar.

Would you take him/how much would you pay?
