  1. Still the best 1v1 defender at the club.

Just doesn’t have the game awareness/nous at the moment - gets caught out defensively in terms of positioning and can’t seem to go forward or launch anything. Just seems to be playing too far within his head like he’s thinking too much about playing rather than just playing.

  2. Ollie is an excellent support cast to a striker and playmaker - the problem is he himself is neither one or the other.

Would probably be excellent as a false 9 but that doesn’t really suit the way we play.

Would still be curious to him trialed as a CAM and maybe there’s a role for him in a 2 behind Ings with the license to push forward and stretch a defence. Just doesn’t seem to fit into a clear role at the minute.

  3. OG not his fault. Seemed better once Buendia came on - good interplay between Digne, Buendia and Ramsey.

Seems the kinda player who needs skilled and active players around him to work with.

  4. Needs to come on as a sub for a while - looks like he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Lets take the pressure off a bit - our depth dictates we have this luxury with a ‘luxury’ player.

  5. - Still doubts Gerrard can coach - too many players still encroaching on each other in that 1st half when we were on top which is a concern and a direct measure of managerial organisation

    - Mings is still our best defender

    - Carlos is an upgrade on Konsa

    - Buendia must start over Coutinho

    - Ings is our best striker and needs continuity in starts

Training is usually delegated by managers but coaches would usually have opinions but tactics are usually done by the manager unless Steve Bruce who doesnt believe in tactics

Usually a manager like an actual manager like Klopp would have a set system they implement very early on

Thanks, that’s about the same as what I would have thought.

Pretty darn concerned that Beal was always billed as the brains behind the operation and Gerrard seems to lack any tactical nous which seems to match up with what’s shown on game day.

  7. From Australia, please excuse my ignorance.

Is it normal in football for managers to not have the core theoretical expertise/tactical nous and essentially subcontract this function out to assistants/others?

Was concerned about this at the beginning but figured it was normal. Although can’t think of other examples where this is the case.

Makes much more sense to sell Ollie.

Given there isn’t much between them quality wise, selling Ollie would get much much more money to spend either on another striker or elsewhere in the team.

Danny’s value because of his age won’t compensate against the quality he brings us.

Keep Danny, sell Ollie and bring in better quality always knowing Danny is there if we need.

Selling Ollie now at his highest premium makes much more sense because we are seeing he’s not likely to be the top notch striker consistently that we need, which include trying to get close to a ~20 goals a season target. Just getting into double figures isn’t enough.

Almost no one scores 20/season without pens…

Do you believe the problem is personnel based then?

Why don’t you think if we bring in someone new that we won’t have exactly the same problem?

Issues at the moment don’t have anything to do with the quality of Ollie or Ings and if we keep bringing in expensive new players that’s what will keep us forever mid-table a la Everton.

If you look at West Ham who finished 19/20 in 16th after bringing in Haller, Soucek, Fornals and Bowen. The following year they on brought in Benrahma and Coufal and finished 6th.

Its not. Gerrard has confirmed it

Gerrard confirmed the club want him to sign. Carney’s team confirmed he wanted to wait until the end of the year (not unreasonable considering his age and the changes at Villa in the past 12 months).

If you can show me where the club have confirmed that he’s on the way out, I’ll accept your point, but at this stage that particular component is exactly what is been exacerbated and peddled by the tabloid press.

It’s no surprise though when after over two thirds of season our top scorer is on 7 goals and second place is on 5 goals.

Yes there are reasons why but there always is, so when you see the stats there is the reason why a new goalscorer gets mentioned.  I’m not saying we should get one but our players don’t score enough goals individually.

Sure but the argument for ‘we need a new striker because the ones we have aren’t scoring enough’ inherently suggests that they aren’t scoring enough because they’re not good enough.

Right now we have 2 strikers who we know are up to a very very high standard, therefore replacing them with another striker without considering any of the additional factors your elude to will ultimately doom us to make the same mistakes.

We always knew this year would be a year of transition, I for one would much prefer to leverage the time we have already invested in current players learning understand each other, and make the structural tweaks required to facilitate more goal output (which I think Gerrard has already begun).

The Manager was asked ( Yesterday or day before ) and literally said they have tried everything from their side to get a deal done, and nothing has progressed.

It's also factual that he hasn't signed a contract, and they've been trying to have him sign one for a while.

This isn't just media tabloid speculation.

Carney’s team have said he wants to wait until the end of the season - not an unreasonable request considering his age and the changes at the club this season.

Gerrards words were we want him to sign - media speculation interpretation has been he’s on his way out and refuses to sign a contract. This is unverified and pure tabloid speculation.

Noteworthy none of the papers are speculating that he might stay.

You're saying Chambers is better than Konsa after four games? Against Newcastle, Watford, Southampton and Leeds?

I'm not even saying he's not better, but he needs to prove it. Konsa is a very good player.

Where did I say I thought he was better?

I said I think Konsa is the better defender… But Konsa might not be as good as we thought

  13. Have we maybe overhyped Konsa and blamed Mings?? I still think he’s the best 1V1 defender of the lot, but defensively we look much stronger with Mings and Chambers.

Konsa is still young so will get there, but not be as good as we thought he is just yet.

the only problem i see with Azaz, is that he is 21 years old and playing on loan in League 2, he will be 22 just after the new season starts.

Its great that he is doing well at Newport, but if he has any chance of pushing for our first team squad, he really needs to be performing in the Championship next year.

Ollie was still kicking about in League 2 at 22 with Exeter City.

I don’t by any stretch think this means he’ll make it, but some take a lot longer than the Bellingham/Foden/Sancho types.

Not writing  him off completely but regardless of age archer is miles ahead of him. If barry wants to make it at villa he has to exceed archer to be ahead of him so massive improvements are gojng to be needed in next few years

Thats all my point is stating

If we’re disregarding age may as well compare him to Watkins.

A couple of questions that would seem to be a sensible starting point on our overall spending:

    • What was our wage bill in the last set of accounts, and what was that as a percentage of our income?
    • What sort of increase will we need to our income line in order to maintain or improve that percentage?

The wider question on the potential for disparities in the squad is possibly more interesting - if we have a player like McGinn for example who was contracted under the previous regime, how will he feel about playing next to a couple of players who earn three times the money he's on - I'm very confident the club have a plan on this and that they've got a good idea what they're up to.

I mean that plan ultimately boils down to 3 options though right?

    - McGinn doesn’t mind

    - McGinn wants to be paid more and we pay it

    - McGinn wants to be paid more so we sell him

Nope. Bailey played predominantly on the right the season before we signed him and that’s where his father stated he likes playing the most, so that’s where I assume he sees himself here. Doesn’t matter where he played before. I imagine Cash played more as a winger than a right back in his career at Forest but we signed him as a right back.

We spent £70m on those two, along with £25m on Ings so we didn’t have to field the likes of Traore, Trezeguet and El Ghazi. And, come the end of the Summer, I imagine all three will be gone as we’ll have improved even further.

Stop with the bullsh** just to suit your agenda. The fact we signed who we did in the Summer is proof the club didn’t back our forward players.

Are you suggesting that Buendia and Bailey were signed with no intention of both of them to be on the pitch at the same time??

Are you also suggesting that had all players been fit under Smith, that we would not have seen all 3 of Bailey Buendia and Traore lining up in the same team in the 4-2-3-1 system?
