Edit - just to further highlight it, Southampton’s record since the end of October played 8, won 1, lost 7. No prizes for guessing who they picked up the win from.

    Was it Villa?

    Oh wait, no.

Dare I say it but anyone think Emi is enough of a shithouse to have put a little less than 100% in under Gerrard because the players wanted him gone?

No chance. He cares way too much to do something like that.

Not that mad......he usually misses from 7 or 8 yards out. Why would you trust him from 12 ?...

Tbh it's only mad because he's currently our only striker. It's weird that literally no-one would trust him.

United fans think he's a joke and can't wait to get rid.

I don't watch man u play often, but I think it's worth noting that by and large man u fans are really **** stupid.

Argentina is an exception - there are people like Buendia who have both, but Emi Martinez and Lionel Messi just use their paternal surname.

    - Damián Emiliano Martínez Romero

    - Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccitini

As far as I know, the naming customs in all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries are consistent. It's just cumbersome to use your entire name so they simplify it by just using the paternal name.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were players around who used the maternal name instead, but you've also got people like Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro who don't use any of their surnames.

Back on topic: big love to Uncle Emery, giving Villa it's mojo back.

Buendia on working under Unai Emery: "As soon as they came here, they told us we needed to win more points away from home and playing a top side like Tottenham team away and winning, we are very happy.

So he came in and said “win more away from home”, and they did. I guess it’s the WAY he said it?

Gerrard said stuff like "<insert team here> should beat us". Unai came in and said "uh, no, actually" and the players were like "oh right, ok". It's that simple.

One of the saddest things about this whole affair is seeing God has +400 pages less than Rashica had

We know better than to tarnish the great man's thread with fish puns.

Also, I think all that can be said about McGrath has been said already. He is humble and has never coveted the spotlight, and this thread reflects that.

When you see him celebrating the penalty wins I think he knows it too

Not sure what he did last night, didn't see the two together but the copa America shoot outs and the Holland one he ran to Emi rather than the scorer

I'm pretty sure the whole Argentina team immediately surrounded him on the halfway line.

  10. Messi is literally the reason I'm interested in football at all. I could never find the interest to pay attention until I saw him play. He makes football look like art. I saw the whole sport in a new light because of him.

To see him finally win the world cup is truly great, and the fact a Villa player was a major reason why is the icing on the cake.

If the price was right he’d leave but I don’t think he’d ever force a move. He has said several times he wants to get Villa to Europe and I believe him.

I don't know if it's just romanticism on my part, but I imagine now he's won the world cup and achieved his dream after saying numerous times how grateful he was to Villa for giving him his chance, he will be inclined to repay the favour by sticking around and leading us to glory.

Our next step should be to hand him the captain's armband, not only because he is the ideal candidate for it anyway but because it would solidify that commitment and give him more reasons to stay than not to.

Absolute horse**** that if that goal counts we likely would have been relegated.

I'm sure people think this was the last minute of the last game of the season.

I was making a joke about Nyland being responsible for Argentina winning the world cup, but ok.

No idea about the translation but there seems to be a bit of a backlash about this already.

What are we saying? A bit of a rude gesture? Caught in the moment? Funny as ****?

Caught in the moment for sure. Things like this should be excused when endorphins and adrenaline are firing like crazy.

If this didn't happen we likely would've been relegated, Emi wouldn't have come to Villa, he wouldn't have been selected for Argentina and he wouldn't have been able to carry them to three trophies in a row.

When you think about it, both Emi and Messi have a lot to thank Nyland for.

you squander a 2 goal lead in a foul-tempered 140 minute football match, get thrust into the most stressful, high-pressure situation in any sport, and your goalkeeper is just suddenly this cackling, dancing maniac who eats penalty takers' souls like they're bar snacks

He really is in his element in a shootout. He was even grinning when the Netherlands scored. Absolute madman.

Had Digne not kicked him March would have got to the ball first.

Doesn't matter if the kick is intentional or not it's still a foul.

Digne needs to be quicker and be aware of his surroundings. It was a clumsy.

99.9 % of people in here would be outraged if this wasn't given to us if it happened the otherway around.

You could argue March wasn't aware of his surroundings either. Neither one of them looked at anything but the ball. Had Digne been half a second quicker to the ball, March could've snapped his leg.

And most people will argue for the outcome that favours them in any situation. I'm sure I'd be saying different if I were a Brighton fan, but honestly I don't think this is a clear-cut incident and it would've been really harsh to give a penalty here.

    Looks clear to me.

March gets to the ball first. Digne kicks him. It's a pen.

    Image

But there was barely anything in it. Also, March was the one who mistimed his tackle because it bounced off Digne's leg and landed at the foot of a Villa player (Kamara?) anyway.

It's not like March had the ball and Digne was trying to get it off him. It was a loose ball and they got to it at roughly the same time.

I can see why there's a discussion, but it certainly isn't obvious.
