Everyone has their own opinion but mine is that our wingers are frankly useless so tactics could be implemented to make sure Luiz and one other of the 3 mids holds back when full backs bomb forward. With Jack in behind 2 mobile strikers we could be a threat.

I would certainly add my vote to our wingers being at best inconsistent. Yet to understand what El Ghazi's role is to be honest, he seems confused also. A shame as he obviously has talent but no tactical 'nous.'

I think that Mings is tough, I see he has been mentioned in this thread. I said tough, I think there is a fine line between being tough and being violent. I don’t think he’s a thug, far from it

Personally I don't think Mings has enough aggression in his game. He is a huge specimen but have you ever seen him intimidate anybody, I haven't.

  3. Yet again I will emphasise that I don't necessarily want Dean to leave. I would love him to stay but the issue I have with his overall performance is that he seems unable to learn from his mistakes. Doing the same things and expecting different results is defined as lunacy.

If this is about all managers, in every walk of life (and I presume it is based on you mentioning your own personal experiences) then from my experience in the workplace, both as a manager and employee, it's an extremely outdated way of thinking.

Human nature is the same now as it was when 'man' crawled on all fours. Some people will always be as helpful and willing to please as they can. Some are only interested in themselves and couldn't give a toss about anybody else. The first group just need asking to do something. The second group need 'instructing.'

See today's 'panic buying' for example.

Won't really matter if we're don't stay up though will it.   At least this extended break gives players like SJM and JG time to get fully fit.

Yes they will, but unfortunatly not at Aston Villa....

Sorry, but this is such a thick argument it literally means nothing.

Look at those figures in context.

I **** hate reading 146m now, it means **** all.

Could you expand your argument without swearing. It just makes you sound like an idiot.

I do. I just find it interesting that someone would want to replace Smith with Potter considering by whatever metric that Smith is apparently failing, Potter would too. They're under somewhat similar circumstances too. Difference is Potter looks to being given time.

    'Similar circumstances '....

Potter 62.5 million spent in summer

Smith 146 million spent in summer

    not exactly similar then......

YEah just a nice bloke who took over a **** basket case 15th in the Championship and got them promoted by randomly getting them to play some of the best football I can remember seeing Villa play by just being nice to them down at bodymoor heath.

Yes and the club is now on its way back to the championship . Is that what you want?

Are you taking Premier League football for granted then? It’s why we got relegated in 2016. It seems that Aston Villa fans including me are taking Premier League football for granted, it’s what got us in to this mess in the first place. It is a privilege to play in the Premier League, very few people actually achieve it. It’s the best league in the world

I don't think spending£146 million in the summer is taking our premier league position for granted. Plus another splurge in the winter window....That money was spent with the sole purpose of ensuring we stayed in the league....

Where did you think we’d finish at the start of the season?

I can't recall thinking that we would be relegated considering the vast amount of money spent in the Summer. I did imagine that we might start slowly until Dean was able to incorporate his tactics and football philosophy .

Unfortunately he has been unable to improve our players and generally speaking the team has performed a little worse each month until we were presented with watching complete chaos.

The corona virus might just 'save' us from relegation. But what now if nothing changes with the team.....

  12. Unfortunately I can see McGinn and Grealish leaving in the summer. It's how the Premier league operates. Contracts mean nothing these days. The 'big' clubs will always take the cream from the small clubs ( that's us I'm afraid ).

This is another reason why the club spiralling into the relegation zone has been a disaster.

  13. I think you have made some interesting points here and they are worth making of course.....but......apart from sort of hoping for the best and crossing our fingers I don't personally think Dean is the answer.

A forum is all about opinions and that is what makes them interesting and worthwhile so I will respectfully disagree with you here as I simply don't see the 'progress 'you see....

  14. P.S.

Still waiting for anybody to forward a reason to keep Dean that reflects his tactical brilliance or astute buying in the transfer market.

Most on here simply describe him as ' a nice bloke', which he probably is....

'Nice blokes' tend to disappear in the harsh world of football management unfortunately...

How do you think sacking Dean Smith during a football shutdown due to a pandemic would look, what type of press coverage do you think we’d receive? I’ve read some of your posts above where you say you don’t know who should replace Dean Smith and that’s the job of the owners, but I beg to differ. By calling for a sacking you have to have a good idea of the replacement, otherwise your argument is mute. Which alternative to Dean Smith is viable, better qualified, obtainable? Unless you can give solid answers to the aforementioned, you’re calling for a sacking with no idea of any credible replacement. And that’s not particularly clever.

I hear what you are saying and you have made some fair points but.."..

I have suggested two 'possible' replacements ( please revisit my previous post ).

You haven't stated why you think Dean is a 'success' ( note inverted comma's , not trying to take the 'mick')

I never said I was clever.....I'm just giving my opinion , like you.......

I think Potter is an excellent young manager but Brighton are an established Premier League club now. I don’t think he would leave Brighton to come to Villa. I think that we should stick with Smith for the time being, I know the majority of our fans are sick of him but I think deserves to be given until the end of the season at least. Chopping and changing manager doesn’t really help a club move forward in my opinion. Patience is needed I think

It would appear that the football season is finished as from now for this season at least. If the club decide to make a change then now would be ideal to give the new manager time to asses his players and introduce his own coaching philosophy.

Obviously changing managers too often is not something that any club would take lightly. But what do you do when the incumbent is so clearly out of his depth.....

Who would you get in as manager to replace Smith?

Yes , that's the million dollar question isn't it. A young , unproven Graham Potter or an old experienced Sam Allardyce? I honestly don't know. What I do see is that Smith is failing.

  18. Dean was given his contract extension when when the club was in 15 th position

and only 4 points above the relegation zone. Obviously if we were to finish in that position then I think every fan would be happy and Dean would be deserving of a new contract , maybe.

I thought that giving the manager a contract extension so early in the season was crazy as it was too early to judge the managers performance.

It appears that I was correct. Since then the club has been sliding steadily towards relegation with the teams performances getting worse ( by and large ) every week.

Wether sacking Dean would save us from relegation is impossible to forecast but I just don't see him as a Premier manager, he simply has no tactical skills ( just look at our defence ) and the player recruitment has been an embarrassing waste of money.

Some may disagree with my analysis and I welcome his supporters posting on here and expanding on his abilities.

I was fascinated to see you both disagreeing, when gleaning both your past posts, you seem to have a similar outlook.....i fear some wires have been crossed here

We all want the same thing, which is a successful football club. We simply have different ideas how to achieve that aim. Having different opinions is normal and should be respected.... ( which you do , btw ).
