Yes it would be a slight defence - I would say shallow. No sensible person thinks we should have followed a mad-cap policy of spend, spend, spend. Ellis could have followed a long term development strategy but he did not. There is no strong reason why, 1993 on, we did not keep up with Arsenal - we were above them in 1993 and had home attendances very similar to Arsenal. I believe Ellis was more concerned with maintaining his own position above all else. I have supported Villa for a long time and I can remember the old board of directors before Ellis arrived (he had been a director of BCFC). That old board was out of touch with football in the 1960s: the truth is Ellis was out of touch with 1990s football.

Fully agree with this. Ellis’ approach to “running” AVFC held us back particularly in the early years of the Premier League. He was so risk averse we missed the opportunity to compete at the top. Remember, we came second in the first year of the Premier League - then slowly slid down to mediocrity and we all know what eventually happened. I could rant on but no point - we now have owners who seem to have a long term, strategic, approach to developing AVFC so let’s all be positive.

Professor Emery should be offered the Lucasian Chair of Tactics given his deep understanding of all things football.

Yes in a way it does but it includes relegation from and promotion into that ‘super league’. No closed shop as was expected for the ‘European Super League’.

Back to bench-warming for him.

Yes we do need to add consistency etc. but I see this as part of the growth cycle outlined in your previous post. In fact these additions will help to push us forward.

It certainly is a gamble but what’s the alternative ? Low risk mediocrity for as long as the fans will fall for it? HDE comes to mind.
