  1. i dont get this hughes is out of contract right now since he didnt take the option for a second year at fulham, why would we contact them?
  2. wouldnt have anything to do with the fact that it was with an injury ravaged fulham side no?
  3. This is the Hughes thats about to walk out on Fulham after a season? Love you long term? that was in his contract though
  4. doubt he'd be at the airport sure he still lives in liverpool
  5. someone like ancelotti is the sensible choice AFTER hughes has built something up over the next few years
  6. might be under 25 then, either way there's definitely an age limit that came in on deals over 5 years when they did that rejig of contracts a while back
  7. so for everyone who was complaining that we were taking too long to get things done and should take a leaf out of chelsea's book, how come it looks like we'll have everything sorted well before them?
  8. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sunderland/9364092.stm So he signed till June 2015 - a four and a half year deal Could we have not pushed him to sign till June 2016 - a five and a half year deal? only players under 23 can sign deals longer than 5 years afaik
  9. He also nearly relegated Wolfsburg who were champions of the German league just two seasons ago. id have thought it was the fact that they were stripped of all their playing assets that nearly relegated them tbh
  10. re matts tweet, is that re houllier going or sparky coming?
  11. its not a **** soap opera lads. Sometimes the least dramatic option is best for the club. Hughes will do a fine job for the foreseeable future
  12. am i jumping the gun in assuming that the fact that fulham havent announced that hughes has taken the option for a second year today that his contract has now expired? Id have thought theyd have announced that asap, so its obviously not been signed. For my money that means hughes is as good as villa manager
  13. you dont consistently win things playing shite though. Success is very much intertwined with the style you play
  14. Tis true. Unfortunately, I am not sure that he has much experience of buying any players. Abramovich at Chelsea, Berlusconi & Galliano (sic) at Milan. That is what worries me with Ancelotti. Neither does he bring through youth. Neither does he build up clubs. He is a manager that works at the top with good squads and players. He will be lost at Villa where he has to balance the wages or work on a budget. This just sums up how deluded this forum gets at times. Now Ancelotti isnt good enough for us!?!? farily clear you havent got a clue about football these past few days
  15. i can absolutely see your logic there, no manager gets to the top without working their way up, BUT you also need to factor in the time it's taken, and the current resources at our disposal. it's been a long while since ancelotti has had big restraings placed on him, and just like any top manager who's been at the peak of the game for a while, it'd take a while for him to get back into the swing of things. its really a case of deciding whether its better to have a manager going downwards or a manager looking upwards. that's only for the board to decide having interviewed the prospective managers, and it's a process none of us will ever be privvy to if ancelotti was interviewed and could outline a realistic plan for getting us where we want to go, then id be all for him
  16. thats where we differ. while i accept that ancelotti would do a hell of a lot better than the others, all things being equal, i also think he would represent more of a risk than the rest. the ideal situation for me would be 4-5 years of moyes/hughes/jol followed by an approach to a manager of ancelottis calibre when the club is ready for it in terms of resources and infrastructure After 4 years of MON, I really think the clubs ready now. mon left us in a financial hole we're still dealing with. When the new rules have taken effect in 3 years time i suspect we'll be brilliantly placed to make a charge at a power shift. Until then we need to focus on getting the infrastructure right in preparation for that moment. A superstar manager isnt necessarily the correct way to go about that

  18. couldnt really fault im for taking a punt on billy for that then i suppose
  19. moyes has spent big money on more than one occasion though sure fellaini was the guts of £18m wasnt he? Yes which shows on rare occasions he has had cash to spend he hasn't done too wisely, he spent pushing 30million on Fellaini and Bilyaletdinov, not great business imo. fellaini was a super signing bilyaletdinov i didnt realise was that expensive, he looks great in flashes but nowhere near the consistency of a player worth more than £8m
  20. because they dont apply common sense and logic to anything football related its a case of "hes been a successful manager so he'd be a successful manager here", despite the fact that he's been a successful manager a clubs with far more resources and draw than villa OK, so I maybe wrong, however I genuinely think the guy has a hell of a lot more to offer than any of the other candidates mentioned. he might, but he'd be a risk. just because he's a name doesnt mean he's going to be a success. the adjustment he'd have to make to even be a moderate success at villa would be huge. it'd be an experience completely at odds with the last 20 years of his career mourinho, for example, could do it at villa. coz it's not that long since he was at porto and operating with similar restraints. its been too long for the likes of ancelotti though

  22. yeah, the choice is obvious if youre a huge club with massive resources. but apply the restraints of villa to this. who has most experience working with low wage ceilings? who has experience searching out bargain players? who knows how to get the most out of the resources at hand? whats the last team carlo ancelotti managed where he couldnt just go out and buy whoever he wanted? he has operated on a whole different level to villa for years, expecting him to slot into buying players he'd never have considered at his other jobs is no guarantee for success I'd assume he had to live with that when he started in Italy and managed to prove himself enough to get the job at Juve and Milan. Wiki says he got Reggiana up in his first season and got Parma into the CL. I don't know what kinds of constraints he has had to live with at these clubs as I am no expert in Italian football but I don't think he had a blank cheque. jesus how long ago is that? people complained about houllier being out of the game for a few years, how long is it since carlo ancelotti had to worry about wage caps, budgets and not managing a fashionable club?
