    Delph would be quality squad addition. He could play at the DM role releasing McGinn and Grealish. Great feet, quick of thought. Watching him tonight though, he likes a backwards pass

    I think Sturidge on a free would be good business as a squad player. He’s clearly not one for the future but one of the most talented players available on a free. If we did I just hope we sign and play a Maupay or Abraham as our first choice striker. We are going to need quality and depth in this squad.

    I am sure its part of the "sustainability" ethos and plan. It won't happen over night and part of why Brentford do so well bringing these guys on, aside from great scouting, is they play them week in week out. But this is because they are mid table Championship and can afford the breathing space of middling expectation. Cant see us giving many youngsters the chance to prove themselves in the first team week after week any longer. The Premier League status just can't risk it and errors are exploited so readily by very good opponents and managers.

    DS will know all about him so if there's a way and a will it might happen. Brentford can't sell half the team though.

    But its no surprise to any of us, and we can keep the back bone of the team with Mings, El Ghazi and Hause. A new forward might actually improve that team, same as a new DM and right midfield. We need decent back up which we don't have so strength in depth to cover injuries and suspensions is the key. £100m isn't a surprise and it won't be a Fulham as we will keep the same back bone.

    @villaluke @whispers_avfc - yes he disappeared, was clearly ‘inside’ but got pulled up or fired. The account 9s still live but last tweeted in 2016, seems more recent than that.

    Wow, maybe the club knows more than is being let on, but releasing players the way we have must suggest we are very confident on our positions with our targets? We are not the most attractive team in the market and didn’t have a big nor massively talented squad so this tact is intriguing. I thought the window was now open but am perplexed why so little activity there has been generally amongst all clubs?

    Would like Lolley, but not at £15m, that’s pulling our trousers down. I do worry that he’s only had one decent season. Maupay is absolute class, if Brentford want £20m i’d snap their hands off. He will go on to very big things, he’s got it all, scores from anywhere, left, right, head, volleys, very quick feet. Him and Tammy would be an absolute handful. Building a team around Maupay, Tammy, Grealish and McGinn we have years of progress and development given their ages. its a lot but £45m for Maupay and Tammy is worth every penny over the long term if we can afford it.

    Bang on. Defence is the key to this season and the Premier League generally: when its so hard to score goals, preventing conceding against some of the best attackers in the country is so important to ensure you at least get a result. 1-0's and draws over a season count.

    I am not suggesting we only sign Cahill and nobody else. For me its a given we get Mings, thats one down... He needs a permanent partner and I don't think Hause (utility/squad) or Chester (crocked) will be that person so we need another first choice centre back. Would love it to be Axel but this is very unlikely, and at a time when we need 10-14 signings necessity suggests that some are loans (with a view to purchase) or out of contract players. Cahill is this and ticks a lot of boxes. Signing this many players is going need compromises and creativity and this deal offers a lot of upside and could bolster the spine of the team.

    We will need out of contract players (e.g. Aribo, Cahill etc) and loans (Axel). Lolley would be good at £10m. The scary part is we need 3 forwards, and £20m doesn’t buy you quality guaranteed. We could spend £45m on Tammy and Maupay and still be concerned at scoring enough at this level.

    You need a really good defence to prosper in the PL, let that be where we spend the money (incl DM). Maupay and Tammy too

    We need 4 centre backs, we have 1 and he is crocked. Hypothetically, ask yourself, would you rather Cahill or Chester? Very happy if Mings and Axel are the other two (bought), or even Konsa.

    I had some smart Alec on twitter saying how rediculous it was, I was arguing that Cahill on a free was a no brainier in our position

    My hope for the window is Mings, El Ghazi, Hause, Lolley, Maupay, Tammy and Axel. I know this is unlikely. Second I would like about 2-4 <25 y.o £10m promising players and very decent DM and CB. Lastly, I would love to see two very good wingers - £20m plus, and a very decent Striker. I know thats greedy and impossible to think may happen, but we could spend upward of £100m if the these owners are the real deal. Incidentally, I think this is what is needed and is not especially extravagant, it only seems so as we have so few squad members. I have no expectation above mid table (anywhere between 16th to 8th) and think as coming 5th in the Championship and scraping through albeit solidly we will have our work cut out - theoretically we are favourites to go back down.
