  1. What is the general opinion with the lad on here?
I have always rated him and was genuinely excited when he signed. First season he was immense but this season, something is clearly up. I am not ITK whatsoever due to the fact I live in Thailand so don't know the word on the street or anyone closely associated with the Villa. All I am getting is that it seems to be his missus is causing issues, mouthing off and distracting him (which wouldn't be the first time for a defender at the Villa *cough* Unsworth *cough cough*)

Can anyone shed any light on the situation or at least give opinions on your thoughts on the player?
I personally don't know why he isn't playing... or why he wasn't even on the bench last night...

  2. He is our talisman, both down to the fact that he is a homegrown hero and one of the few shining lights that has come out of the academy in decades and also down to the fact that, by Premier league football standards, the rest of our squad is so utterly mediocre... We aren't poor... There are other teams much worse than us (player for player)... But we need him in our side because what he offers us is so much more than anyone else can

All of this bad blood does no one at Norwich any good.  It actually is bad for their current management team as well as it says that they are still bitter Lambert left them and ergo they still want him as their manager,  they are not satisfied with what they have now

Maybe they just don't want to sell?

To us.  If someone like Fulham,  Newcastle,  Stoke,  Cardiff,  WBA etc etc etc  put in a bid of around 1.5M they'd sell him of that I have no doubt at all.  It is us they have the issue with and it is because they are still sore we took Paul from them.

I'm pretty sure we would not sell him for £1.5m to anyone else but its also correct to say we do not want to sell to Villa/Lambert if we can help it. Lambert/Villa manufactured his departure from us and then tried to avoid us getting the rightful compensation. Most clubs would be sore. Its no coincidence that Lambert falls out with every club he leaves/walks out on because he is a ruthless individual who is only ultimately concerned with his own career. That's fine, we knew that, benefitted from it for a while and ultimately should not have been surprised that he walked out on us in the same way he did Colchester. That's not to say though that we are not entitled to be disappointed or indeed that we should go about making his life easier now he's your manager by selling him any players he fancies when we don't need to sell them.

  4. The Blues match with Enkleman in goal will always go down in history as the worst ever... As soon as the final whistle went, the phone rang and it was the unclean elements of my mums side of the family gloating...

Funnily enough, they didnt seem to think it was quite so funny when I returned the favour when they got relegated by Newcastle a few years later...
They give it all but don't like it back one bit...

  5. Merson was quality... Loved watching him play when I was a teenager... Taylor is obviously 'one of us' so he has a special place in most, if not every, Villa fans heart. Always liked George Boateng as well...

    Its hard to pick one...

Kinsella and Leonhardsen are most definitely not in the mix though....

  6. He has been sussed out... Teams know who he is and what he can do so they don't take him for granted or give him space and they do what they can to snuff him out... Unfortunately, we don't have adequate quality in any other position to cause defenders to feel like it is worth leaving him alone to negate other risks... Its bloody frustrating to watch... Especially after two completely flaccid and inept performances on Sky, two weekends in a row...

  7.

Ive had a few beers, its 11pm here in Thailand and just seen his recent comments about things that are happening at the Villa... Apologies for that :-D

    So what did he say?

Tell us, and this thread might have some legs. Otherwise it's going to peter out or (more likely) end in a squabble.

Bugger... I cant find it for the life of me... I swore it was on the OS.

He was talking about Ron Vlaar and the current squad. It was the mannerisms he was using to talk about the club. He wasnt saying 'they'... He was saying 'we', like he was still pulling the shirt on... It made me smile. It was just nice to know that our club clearly still has a special place in his heart.

  8. Mellberg played for us for a longer period (and dont get me wrong, I bloody love what Olof did for us, I really do)... but Laursen to me made more of an impact... Maybe it was because of his comeback from injury and wanting to prove himself enough to make a difference... I cant pinpoint it... But if I were to choose who I wanted in my starting 11 more, it'd be the REAL Great Dane!

  9.

In my recent memory, I cant remember a single player whose words I hang on and respect when I see them.

Of all of his years playing football (injuries included)... He really does love our club... He is one of us, no doubt about it... I really hope he becomes part of our club in a coaching, managerial or ambassadorial capacity later in life because he really is quality person who feels what we all feel...

Your first sentence doesn't actually say what I think you want it to say ;)

"In my recent memory, I cant remember a single player whose words I hang on and respect more when I see them."

You're absolutely correct... Ive had a few beers, its 11pm here in Thailand and just seen his recent comments about things that are happening at the Villa... Apologies for that :-D

  11. What is a stupid One Direction fan going to do really? Exactly how threatening can one of their death threats be? Gabby should be glad it wasn't Kerry King from Slayer that he clattered... Not only because King is huge... but their fans (by and large) can be somewhat more.... intimidating

  12. he looked really good and was a bit emotional when he was telling about his illness. also said some funny things when he was on teh show

Did you see Robbie Fowler? The bloke looked like he was about to burst into tears when Petrov was talking.

Very moving interview; wouldn't wish what Stan has had to go through on anybody

  13.

Ultimately, the problem I have with the quotes is that there's no introspection, he's missed the important question.

Are the bomb squad being treated unfairly? Yes - if all other things are equal - the thing is that all other things aren't equal - Darren should be asking himself why he's in the bomb squad. For me it's three things, his performances, his attitude and his wage - and only one of those isn't his fault.

In my opinion, we paid too much for him, we paid him too much, he lost interest pretty quickly and he's just not that good.

Aye. This part in particular is worrying:

I understand that not every player can be every manager’s cup of tea, but to be alienated like that, to be kicked out of the first-team dressing-room, when I’ve played a long time, when I’m an international, just felt a bit disappointing.

That smacks of "I have nothing to prove and should be chosen by default". If that is true, then that may be why you were on the bomb squad, Darren.

    ^^^^^This all the way!

That interview stinks of 'woe is me, I deserve to be treated better because my name is Darren Bent and I earn a lot and people know who I am'

If he had worked harder to prove his worth to the team as a whole instead of just being the 'fox in the box' (that to be honest we needed but not as much as an all round team player) then he might have a point... but he was made captain at the start of the season and lost it... Something happened and my bet is that Bents ego had something to do with it...
