Can anyone recommend any Boxing films to watch?
I'm planning to watch "Facing Ali" tomorrow.
Facing Ali is a great film, watched it last week. Had to laugh at Leon Spinks, they asked him what he did when he got the decision over Ali and he said "I think I broke wind, but my brother still picked me up by my ass anyway"
The Great White Hope is a good one too, story of Jack Johnson with James Earl Jones playing the lead role. Raging Bull is an obvious one and definately the best boxing film ever.

Khan is actually in a very difficult position now, thinking about it. If he ducks this guy then who the hell can he fight? Moving up in weight might have been a good move in the short term but I get the feeling 2010 will be an enormously bad year for the guy unless he drops the belt and lets Warren and the gibbering retard pick some cannon fodder for him.
Aha, I'm guessing you thought I was talking about Khan getting smashed, but in fact I was referring to Hayden's y'know :winkold:

Promoter Frank Warren has confirmed what BoxingScene.com has been reporting for the last few weeks, the WBA has ordered junior welterweight champion Amir Khan to defend his title against interim-champion Marcos Maidana. Khan will have to make a big decision. He will either defend his title against one of the most dangerous punchers at the weight in Maidana, or vacate the title to take a fight with less danger but bigger dollar signs. HBO is very interested in a Khan-Maidana fight.
Maidana will push to make this fight happen. He turned down a potential fight with WBC champion Devon Alexander to pursue a Khan clash. Golden Boy Promotions co-promotes Maidana with Universum. It will be interesting to see if they are able to back Maidana off but not likely. Khan's trainer Freddie Roach had recently told BoxingScene that Golden Boy had the inside track on signing Amir. The British superstar has been talking to American promoters about a possible deal to further his career in the United States.
Maidana fought and stopped Victor Ortiz to pick up the interim-title but Dmitriy Salita was the mandatory contender in the WBA's rankings and he too was waiting for while to get a title shot. The WBA allowed Khan-Salita to move as long as the winner would fight Maidana in their very first defense.
Khan fighting a "dangerous puncher"?! Never thought i'd see it.
He'll vacate and fight someone like Morales or maybe even a Barrera rematch.

Guess I'll have to make-do with Vitali 8) Not so sure about Maidana....I'd like to hope he shatters Khans glass just for the comedy value but Khan will no doubt duck him. Shame because it could actually be a competitive match from what I've seen of Maidana so far....he hits hard yeah but he's sloppy and also doesn't appear to have a great chin himself.

I think he's probably skint, how he lost the money is irrelevent but the retirement was bullshit, everyone knew it. I'm actually toying with the idea of going to the Pac/Mayweather fight, should it ever happen, depends on what the tickets cost though.

I agree re Mayweather, the Hatton fight was the biggest one out there at the time, as was the DLH one, he beat them both and had time off. Leonard was always retiring and coming back too, back in my youth. Leonard was a better fighter than Mayweather without question....but Mayweather is smarter, he'd have never got suckered into a brawl by Duran that's for sure.
$500 isn't that bad actually, not sure I'd pay it though. We'll see if the fight happens, maybe one of my stateside mates can get me in for cheap as chips money.

Incidentally I've started reading that Boxing Confidential book I recommended to you again, get it. It's by Jim Gray, in case you're interested. Also there's 2 books out there on the Tyson rape trial, both are great reading.

Shit yeah that's it, Jim Brady....it's heavy going in places but if you are serious about being a fighter there's a lot of important lessons to be learnt in there - and you'll learn a lot of interesting stuff about the way things used to be in the mafia controlled days, crazy as hell in places and there's a lot of sob stories in there too, reduced me to tears in places.

That Thomas Hauser book on Ali is a must must read too, if you ain't read that then you ain't a boxing fan
I actually felt guilty reading that for what a mean word removed I am at times, wish I had the all round decent nature Ali has. I've never heard the saying void is void until you just posted it....what's it' supposed to mean?

Let me know if that book is worth reading when you've finished it, might buy it if it's good. I always thought Atlas was an idiot...only a complete moron could have trained Moorer so badly that he lost to Foreman at that stage, I still remember his crap advice for that one :shock: Don't get me wrong I love old George and was delighted when he won, but Moorer and Atlas were pathetic that night.
Give me a shout when you've read confidential, I've got a ton of other boxing books, might be prepared to borrow them and save you a few quid if you like. You have to return them though
That's why I've never seen that void is void crap then, I generally avoid the Pac/Mayweather threads, it's repetitive bollocks by 2 sets of equally biased fans. I prefer the Lewis/Klitschko stuff

Another vote for Blumenthal, he's simply amazing. Self taught as well. When he was doing that series of shows about feats through the ages, his erupting chocolate dessert was a thing of beauty.
On a slightly more mundane level, I really like that Bluenose (sorry) Glyn Purnell when he's been on Great British Menu. I made one of his curried fish dishes and it was culinary perfection.
Heston Blumenthal isn't self taught, he worked at Raymond Blancs place with MPW back in the 80's. I do like the guy though, he had the piss taken out of him royally by Amstell when he was on Never Mind the Buzzcocks so he's alright by me.
Some love needs to be given to Anthony Bourdain too, his comments about Gwyneth Paltrow are legendary...she made some programme with a chef (might have been Mario Batali) about the culinary delights of Spain, and Bourdain was quoted as saying “Why would you go to Spain with the one bitch who refuses to eat ham?"
My vote would go to MPW too, a bit of a rocket polisher yeah but aren't all the others?
I saw Ramsay on Jonathan Ross a few weeks back and he was banging on about having Xmas dinner with the Beckhams....for that alone he must die. It was also most amusing when Alex Riley made him look like the lying hypocrite that he is a few weeks back too, fancy serving boiled shit in a bag eh

God bless America, love the place and have visited it several times. Sure it has it's good and it's bad but on the whole it shits all over the UK in a big way as far as I'm concerned, the quality of life is just so much better.
Of course it has it's bad parts too, but so do we. Yes it has retarded politicians but so do we. Yes they instigate stupid wars from time to time but so what, that's no reflection on the average American any more than our troops dying in Afghanistan is a reflection on the average Brit.
All my best holidays have been taken in the good old US of A, and I'm about to buy a couple of holiday properties there too so I can get there more often (and make a few quid from rent, obviously). I find the place extremely endearing, personally....love the way they all fly their countries flag on their front porch too, you wouldn't dare do that over here, you'd get your windows bricked in :shock:

Pork Scratchings too, can't resist the **** things. Funnily enough I must have gone 5 years at least without touching them, then some utter rocket polisher decided it'd be a good idea to put them in the vending machines where I work :x I probably have 2 packets of them per week now, not catastrophic I know but I wish they'd remove the bloody things and replace them with something less tempting.

I could play "Stairway To Heaven" on the guitar when I was 14. Jimmy Page didn't write it until he was 28. I think that says a lot
but decided to check them both out on youtube to refresh me
