  1. When was the last time wages were a problem after having a fee agreed? I can't think of any examples during the Lerner era. Anybody? None that I'm aware of, however... I'm not saying wages will be a problem BUT as RL, PF and AM will know how the forthcoming UEFA restrictions will affect the structure of the club, I can't imagine them saying "name your price" (as it seemed with a few of MON's signings). Provided CNZ doesn't take the p!ss with his demands, it's looking good! 8)
  2. I disagree and don't believe it would have been any different if we had dealt before SD's departure. Whelan would have used the AY £16m as his lever instead. Should we have dealt before selling AY? Well Whelan would have known, as we all did, that AY was leaving for at least £15m so his position was ready made before the end of the season. We might have been able to get CNZ for £9m back in January but then we'd have one of AY, SD or CNZ on the bench for 5 months costing more than the £500k saved. I say well done to BOTH parties for agreeing a fee. Whelan wanted to maximise his income and took a shine to the nice round figure of £10m. Villa wanted to stick to the principle that CNZ was originally up for £9m. It takes maturity from both parties to agree as they have.
  3. Well I am, certainly. Not for me. Downing is more consistant but N'Zogbia can do the spectacular and pull something out of nothing. That is why Liverpool looked at both and decided to pay the extra £10m, for that consistancy. Glad we finally look like signing him. I really hope that it is not the end of our summer though. I suspect the extra £10m was mostly due to Downing having 100% longer on his contract and a significant premium for an English player. There is one other reason but I'm wary of starting a backlash from the VT depressives.
  4. I don't believe it is as black and white as you paint it. On fan message boards everything is black and white. There are no shades of grey Indeed. It disappoints me when strong accusations are thrown around when none of us know the FULL FACTS of private and complex situations. Do I think N'Zogbia will be joining us? I don't know, let's wait and see.
  5. I don't believe it is as black and white as you paint it.
  6. 8) Here's one: There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis. He's over trained as well. :bonk:
  7. I think I read something similar about 10 years ago.
  8. I'm beginning to think we should pay the £10m, make sure the contract is signed, and then issue a full and frank statement expressing our delight with the player but extreme disappointment at the Chairman of the selling club moving the goal posts and that our witnessed good practices are not reciprocated. Let Whelan put that in his pipe and smoke it.
  9. 8) With DB9's contribution we would be in the top 4; OR SI would then stay with us. WIN - WIN
  10. Except, according to most, we don't have much cash at all.
  11. Well if since verbally agreeing the price you'd seen me sell two similar cars for 110% and 80% more than yours was going for I'd say you'd then be perfectly with in your rights to give me a bell before I came to pick your motor up and said the market has changed, as you well know, and I'd like a little more for my motor. It also wouldn't help that I'd let myself in desperate need of your car as I was currently left having to get the bus. I agree that the seller has every right to change their mind. My question was, what do you think and what do you do? I'd think the seller was a dick and go for a couple of pints knowing I could because I was using the bus!
  12. Comparing the players who were/are in their final year of contract, I think the big difference between their values can be explained thus: Ashley Young is generally regarded as the slightly better player; Whilst they both suffer with inconsistency, Ashley Young has proven to be a more reliable player; Significantly, it is well documented that English players command a significant premium over non-English players.
  13. N'Zogbia's agreed price to sha last year has little relevance to his price to us now. The club N'Zogbia is registered to has the right to demand the price they want, as much as any other club has the right not to pay that price and not buy the player. However - IF Whelan verbally agreed a £9m deal with AM and/or PF early this summer but has then had a late change of mind, it does not reflect well on him. So much for the right way to do football business! IF this deal is like that, consider this: You see my car advertised, ring me up and agree to pay the £9000 asking price. On your arrival to collect the car, I note that you're dressed well and wearing good shoes and a nice watch. You really like the car which appears exactly as advertised. You produce the £9000 to purchase my car but I say "Give me £10000 and you can have it." What do you think and what do you do?
  14. Whilst most football clubs have some kind of plan, I don't think any would fully explain it to their fans. Too much rope... I would never expect to know all the facts regarding a private contract but - Perhaps Given accepted a lower salary for a longer period to suit Villa's aim of reducing the yearly wage total? Villa get a great keeper for a relatively modest salary in years 1 to 3 but take a calculated risk on his performance and fitness in years 4 and 5.
  15. Except if N'Zogbia is on a free, I think there'd be so many teams looking at him. Beat me to it.
  16. Might be answered by this: I love playing VT jigsaws! Apparently* Given noted that Friedel and Van der Sar played past 40 and wanted £60k/wk for 7 years, we offered £20k/wk for 3 years; noting the low transfer fee for a good keeper, both parties settled on £40k/wk for 5 years but neither would iron the Goalkeeper shirt at BMH. * totally made up but as reliable as most quoted sources.
  17. .....what the ****? Cant really argue with that mate can you? The club was more stable under o'neill than I and MANY others can ever remember it being, with 3 consecutive finishes of 6th and really look like breaking the top 4 in 2 of them seasons. Yes I know some people think he spunked a load of cash, but all the blame cant land at his feet, there must have been somebody sanctioning the deals. And I cant really remember ANY villa fans moaning when we brought the likes of Sidwell, Beye, etc etc. At the time everyone seemed happy that we were building a squad that could push us on those extra couple of places. I can also remember people moaning how long the deals took to go through, and if I remember rightly this was also chalked down as MON fault also. Funny hey! And his point about us finishing in the top half at the moment is not far off in my opinion, where do you expect us to finish with how things stand at the moment? just cant see what point you were trying to make with that comment. Not sure what any of that has to do with Charles N'Zogbia? nothing mate, a bit like 50 other pages of this thread have nothing to do with N'Zogbia, every threaqd always leads to someone having to finger O'Neill for everthing. I was just asking the guy to explain his "what the ****" comment. as to me it was a perfewctly valid point. That ok? In an N'Zogbia thread, it's as unwelcome as the other 50 pages you referenced. so have a go at everyone else who comments aswell then... so a "what the ****" comment that is clearly rude and expresses no point of opinion is ok is it.... ???? Ok mate. Stu's wtf comment was expressing a point of opinion that a few of us thought as well. Why did a MON and top 4 comment suddenly appear in an N'Zogbia transfer speculation thread?
