Still feel we play the ball much too slowly - maybe today it's the heat. It's why generally we haven't troubled Bournemouth or Everton when they are in their low block.

This idea that we shouldn’t sign any more players with Gerrard in charge is a bit daft if you ask me. The modus operandi should be to ‘sign good football players’ regardless of the manager. We need to continue to try to improve the starting XI in the next few weeks and if Gerrard continues to fail as a manager, then we just get rid and bring somebody else in to work with the good players we’ve signed.
Couldn't the argument be made that we might already have the players but SG is not using them correctly? e.g. Sanson, Buendia, Coutinho more central, Luiz in the 8, McGinn higher up...

Seems like 90% on here want Gerrard out
More like 90% think he is not delivering and we need to be prepared for a managerial change if things don't get better quickly.

Apprently Potter is a blues fan so might be a no go
Don't think professionals really care about childhood loyalties.

If there is no improvement by the WC break he should be sacked. Problem is, will Purslow sack his mate?
Hopefully the owners will step up and insist that he goes. They do appear to be quite ruthless
Don't think they are proper mates. In the intro press conference it was mentioned that they only had some fleeting interactions at Liverpool.

For those arguing it's just one game - it really isn't. SG's record is quite poor since he came here despite having a solid squad and the club investing in some top talents. The tactics, lineups and play have all been very questionable. Despite the results, our play during the preseason was also quite poor. Think fans have a right to be genuinely worried. As some have mentioned, even the Villa content creators (i.e. vloggers, podcasters) - who generally are much more level headed than the anonymous keyboard warriors that frequent message boards, chatrooms and Twitter were fuming after yesterday's game and quite concerned about the future.

Not for me, the glaring issue here is Beale leaving. Early signs are not good at all.
Other than the Leeds and Southampton games, did not think our play was good last season either.

The lifespan of modern day managers at a club is no more than 2-3 years (Klopp and Pep the only ones over 4 years at their clubs). He got the Smith hire correct - took us to the PL and kept us there. SG created PR buzz and attracted top talent to the club. Unfortunately, the play on the field has not met expectations. Don't think Purslow gets the ax just because of that.

I think the weak mentality runs deeper than just the manager/coaching staff. The Club itself is weak.
Not sure what you mean here. Our facilities, stadium, fan base, ownership, etc. are all top class. Whatever is wrong with the management and/or squad is isolated and surely can be remedied.

We need a striker more than anything, it's not about a player that will score more than Ollie and Danny, it's about a player that will hold up the ball better than them, link up with our players better than them, that's what we're missing in the final third, someone that will bring others into play. Jonathan David would be far out.
IF we don't need goals, we have Keinan Davis

In terms of tactics, the commentators were pretty much echoing what is being said here. Everyone seems to see the problem but the coaching staff. I recall SG having three long breaks, including this preseason, where he had time to organize the team and each time we have looked worse after the breaks.

So our players are worse than Bournemouth's?
My point being I dont trust Gerard with any new potential signings.

He must be absolute dire in training. Can't think why else he is not in the matchday squad. Chambers and Kosna can cover the RB position, so why do we need Young on the bench?

Hooooooof! Boring football! Sad thing is Purslow won't be sacking him even if we lost 10 on the bounce!
He'll be out at the World Cup break if we are not solidly challenging for top half. Poch will be our new manager.

His love affair with McGinn, Coutinho, Young (on the bench instead of KKH or Sanson) is going to ultimately cost him.

How much would we sell Kessler, Iroegbunam or Archer for? Probably less than 20M. All three are more proven the Carney. Good business.

Off the pitch he is brilliant. Has not shown me anything on matchdays. Same issues linger.

Dont think our issues have to do with the squad.

Same issues as always: can't play out from the back, can't keep possession, can't properly press and can't play through the middle. We'll basically scrap for mid-table spot due to the individual talent we have. The team game is not there.
