  1. I have to say, it has not really sunk in that this is in a few weeks. With the HR issues, dodgy nature of how it was awarded, the ineptitude of Southgate and the odd timing of it means that it has really passed me by. I will end up watching the odd game (probably suffering the England games and maybe the Final) but certainly won't be trying to catch as much as possible. With it being Qatar has really soured it, just everything is wrong about it. Barring money, what was other reason was there for letting Qatar host?

And as for Blatter to say now that it shouldn't host. I know his case was thrown out the other month, but he is linked to most of the corruption in football. Why wasn't he saying that when he was president and/or actually have influence over it? Just stinks and has really tainted football.

Also, who are we likely to lose? Martinez, Cash, Bednerak and Dendoncker? Is that it? I know Watkins, Ings and Mings are on the fringes of the England squad but suspect that they will be screwed over by Southgate. Digne and Kamara also on the fringes of the French squad but also seem unlikely. Am I missing anyone? From a purely selfish perspective, normally I want as many Villa but I am quite glad that we are not missing many as it means Emery is going to have a nearly full squad for 2 months to reprogram.

    SNL.
My OH (American) is desperate for me to see the funny in it and I just don’t see it. I’m being inundated with a plethora of videos to convince me. It means a lot, obviously, but I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve just decided I’m not going to like any of it and I’m not giving them a chance but I’ve not seen anything yet that so much as raised a smile yet she’s sitting there laughing her head off.

To me SNL is just massively inconsistent. There are some very funny stuff that comes out of it. Especially from back in the day when stuff like Celebrity Jeopardy was on there.

But there is also loads and loads of absolute shite on it.

This. I do enjoy Weekend Update is the by far the best bit and the cold opening and monologue vary on quality depending who's doing it. The sketches however are generally cringeworthy and usually based on 1 relatively unfunny joke repeated ad nausea.

  3. Emery will know that they will be smarming from yesterday and will try and smash us in vengence. Suspect it will be quite a strong team and suspect that Fernandes will be starting in light of how woeful they were yesterday.

I wonder if we go there and soak up the pressure for as long as possible. Start Kamara (if fit) and Dendoncker (if not cup-tied) or alternatively maybe Luiz, Chambers or even Nakamba(!). Probably look at Watkins Really stop them in the midfield; lots of pressure and really shut them down. See the crowd turn against them and then throw on Ings and/or Archer at the right time in the 2nd half (60 minutes or so) and nick it 1-0.

I really do think we see a very different team, if not personal wise, mentality wise at least. It is why Emery already feels like the right appointment.

Whar is illegal is when landlords raise the rent by double or treble the amount and when tenants try to negotiate they are slapped with  s21 on the grounds that the landlord has decided to move into the property when they have no intention of doing so. This type of thing is going on as landlords realise they can make more money in short term let's or holiday homes.

    Immoral and unethical? Absolutely.

Illegal? Sadly not. Once the agreement is up, there’s no obligation to offer it at the same, or similar price. This is why there is the need to remove s.21 evictions, won’t happen though as it’s an easy way to make more money.

    What is happening?

Not sure of the latest information but s.21 evictions were an option for landlords to remove tenants from properties on fixed terms or rolling basis without any need to justify it, so long as it was done in the proper way. There was confirmation that it was going to be removed but I understand now that it is remaining - to be honest not entirely sure why (save it is a very pro-landlord piece of law).

Sadly @PaulC whilst it may be "unethical" it wouldn't technically be illegal.

I might be wrong (perhaps someone would be more knowledgeable than me on it?) but I don’t think the European Court of Human Rights would permit the UK to enact such a law.

Off shore processing (in countries like Naru) was also a part of the Australian approach.

One of the (many) misinterpreted European Laws Rules. Whilst we have to consider the impact of the HRA (and convention of Human Rights), UK Judges only have to take the Courts decisions into account;  they don’t have to follow it.

The Human Rights Act also requires UK courts, including the Supreme Court, to "take account" of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (which sits in Strasbourg). UK courts are not required, however, always to follow the decisions of that Court. Indeed, they can decline to do so, particularly if they consider that the Strasbourg Court has not sufficiently appreciated or accommodated particular aspects of our domestic constitutional position.

There is almost certainly a pragmatic, cost effective way to deal with the immigration situation in a humane way, it just doesn’t suite the Tories to solve the problem.

I mean, she isn't right to hold any position of power but that isn't going to be the Tories view.

We normally expect ex-cabinet members to creep back in after a while (when people had forgotten) but it has been 1 week when she technically resigned for breach of security. If she wasn't fit to be a minister last week for valid reasons, why is she fit to be a minister this week? Utter farce.

Some quotes on the English language version of the website at least

    https://villarrealcf.es/en/news/item/35951-emery-i-felt-at-home-at-villarreal

    Quote

The Basque head coach thanked the club for their trust in him and predicted a great future for the Yellows

Unai Emery appeared before the media this Tuesday to give his last words as Villarreal CF head coach. Accompanied by the chairman and CEO of the club, the Basque manager said farewell to the Yellows family before embarking on his future career in England.

The coach from started by thanking the club for the trust placed in him: “I am very grateful to Villarreal CF, the president and Fernando. I am also grateful to José Manuel Llaneza, who will always be in my memory. I am also grateful to all the people who are part of the club, the people and the fans. For all those moments we have shared, which have been precious.”

After two and a half years in the Yellows’ dugout, Emery has decided to take on a new project. “I've had two and a half very nice years here. I've felt at home at heart, but I carry the profession inside me. Now I have a new opportunity, just like when I came here. I thought I should take it as a different sporting challenge,” Emery acknowledged.

Despite his departure, the Basque manager stressed that it is time to say goodbye to a united dressing room, with whom he has experienced great moments: “It's a difficult context for the players. Now I will say goodbye to them. It's a professional, mature dressing room and they will adapt to whatever comes. It's a united group. Another coach will come in with his message. They are professionals and they understand that.”

Finally, Emery predicted a bright future for Villarreal: “It's a great project and they have a great fan base behind them. They are going to enjoy a beautiful pitch and will continue to do great things in football. I'm leaving an exciting project, with options in LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the UEFA Europa Conference League. Here I have been able to be me. They have given me great conditions to bring out my best version. I have felt at home, but now it is time to continue to have challenges outside.”

    ...

Villarreal president Fernando Roig thanked Unai Emery for his work and professionalism during his time at the helm of the Yellows: “We thank him for everything he has done with us. He has done a great job. With him, we have been champions of the Europa League and we have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.”

    ...

Villarreal CEO Fernando Roig Negueroles acknowledged that Emery's departure is a setback, but stressed that the club is already working on a replacement: “It's caught us off guard, but it's something that football clubs live with. Emery is a great coach, but we are already working on finding the best solution.”

The most interesting quote is "Here I have been able to be me. They have given me great conditions to bring out my best version." I wonder if that is a slight dig at a previous job(s)?

It also seems we acted fast, certainly with Villareal. Whether we were making noises before or not it is difficult to tell.

  9. Can I check, is there any Villa fan that is not happy with this?! It may be one of the first decisions that everyone agrees with!

Feels like it is the final piece in the puzzle. We saw on Sunday that actually the players have been underperforming before and this is already a top 10 team, maybe higher. He isn't coming here to make up numbers or dwell mid table, he is here to win trophies. Absolutely love it.

I agree, It'll be like kicking a dead pig but I'm not sure of the point you are making

Re-electing Johnson will just be the cherry on the icing of the bakewell tart of Tory destruction

Him and Sunak are the 2 sides of the Tories and we’ve now got to the stage that they will no longer work together. It ultimately depends if they will go full blown separation and ultimately split the party.

    One can hope anyway.

Odds on Boris and a general election after?

I think sadly, a vote of no confidence, push to GE would either need the leader to g for it or for a large chunk of Tories to go for it as well. If they can unite behind someone you can guarantee that they will happy sitting pretty for 2 years to try and repair the damage and take their easy money for nodding along.

If they can’t agree though, there will (hopefully) be complete collapse followed by a GE.

When Truss resigned, it did cross my mind whether she would be THAT stupid to call a GE, which would have been utterly comical. Probably end up with most of the Tories voting against it!

    Hunt's already out apparently.

So I guess we'll have Sunak, Braverman, maybe Mordant?

    Seems like the initial reaction.

However, with Braverman she literally resigned yesterday as she breached the ministerial code. I know it is likely it was a "convenient excuse", but if she wasn't fit to remain as Home Secretary, why on earth should she be fit to be PM?!

So instead of just letting the confusion surrounding the vote disipate and do nothing, they've doubled down. It's almost as if every time they have a choice to make, they make the absolute worst choice for their party

It's almost impossible to make that many bad calls

It almost makes you think that the whole Lib Dem agent thing may have an element of truth...

And then you realise its Liz Truss and that actually explains everything.

So they are potentially going to suspend/chuck out Truss/Johnson and May (along with a number of other high profile MPs)?! If they do get rid of those 40 (unlikely) that’ll cut their technical majority to single figures, all for a vote that was completely irrelevant, wasn’t going to change anything and also completely of their own making.

This government is bringing new meaning to the word incompetence.

Crikey, reading Suella Braverman's resignation letter, she is really not keen on immigration is she? 3/4 of the letter is concentrating on the subject, it's virtually obsessive.

I would imagine that the huge broad role of Home Secretary takes in a vast number of functions and responsibilities and immigration will only be a very very small part of that.

It seems almost unhealthy her focus on this, how much other stuff has been or actually would have been neglected by her obsessive focus on this?

As I assume she is a product of immigrantion at some point in the past it's really bizarre.

I think the anecdote is that should she put in place the restrictions she would wish for, her parents wouldn’t have been allowed in the country.

Awful person quite frankly and her comments would be shocking on GB News/Fox News, let alone as the head voice of democratic government.

Every day longer this government is in power it is going to be exponentially longer for the Tories to get in any position of real power.

Hopefully the other parties can sort it out so the system becomes fairer for everyone, not just the richest.

  16. So glad Braverman has gone, but clearly she has jumped before she is pushed (either within government or party) as that is a particularly scathing resignation letter.

Couldn't have happened to a worse person - hopefully she will lose her seat at the next GE and she goes into obscurity aka GB News.

Also, why have they turned the fracking vote into a confidence vote? Seriously moronic. I can see a number are going to oppose anyway but its funny that some are only voting in support to ensure their letters remain valid.

    Farcical state of affairs!
