Found this page on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_human_disease_case_fatality_rates
The very scary sounding Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) - which is also a coronavirus - has a fatality rate of 35%.
~20 deaths / ~600 infected = 3.3% fatality rate. If that's right then that would be up there with stuff like measles, smallpox, and Spanish flu, but presumably the rate is significantly lower due to a lot of mild cases going undetected?
Also, for it to blow up into an epidemic, it needs to be contagious enough for each person to infect, on average, at least one other person (I forget the name for this number, but if the number is <1 it will naturally fade, while anything significantly >1 becomes very hard to control without vaccination). Seems like the current reporting is that it is less contagious than SARS? (And people saying China are showing signs of being quite transparent and responsible about this, so no signs of a cover-up.)
Think I might watch Twelve Monkeys before I go to sleep.
An expert on infectious diseases this morning on the BBC news said that number is now around 2.5.

Leeds next five games are v Fulham, Preston, SHA (lost on their last two trips to the sty), West Brom and Sheff Weds. Would be surprised if their lead over 3rd is still 10 points when they finish off that, if it's 5-6 points it's game on as we saw last season.
You called it (apart from they’ve played an additional game: today’s against QPR). Their record since blowing it against Cardiff has been atrocious. I think they’ve taken something like five points from an available eighteen since then. The Biesla slump is definitely kicking in.

If he ever leaves us I’ll have a cry wank.
Cry because he’s gone, but wank over the fact that I got to watch one of the most talented players ever to play for the club.

We need to be much more effective than in the summer.
Nearly £60m on Wes, Nakamba, Trezeguet and Luiz. We can't survive another window like that.
We spent a lot of money, and an awful lot of it went on players that should not be starting in the Premier League.
Very valid post and one for the Pitarch thread

He’ll probably be a Traore type character who will be too raw for us then develop hugely further down the line but at an entirely different club.
I’m not sure he’s what we currently need in the here and now and don’t think we can afford him the time to develop here.

I did a Wesleyesque day at work today. I hung around in all the places I shouldn’t be, was never at my desk where I should be, and laid off work to my team mates whenever it came my way all the while looking grumpy and moaning at everyone around me.
Some of my colleagues applauded my sterling efforts whilst the rest just called me a useless word removed.

DS said he “liked the hunger he saw in his (Drinkwater’s) eyes” when he met him.
Now whether that was hunger for the game or hunger for a greasy kebab (cos that’s what ten pints does to a bloke) who knows.
Either way, Smith clearly must have had a big say in his signing.

Sometimes I get so bored at work that I start doing some actual work.
Anyway, good luck Danny. I hope he gives it his all and proves his worth.

McGinn will probably be match fit sooner than Drinkwater is!

Don’t remember him looking like that.
So what you saying then...2/10 WNB or 8/10 WB?

Seems he's made the Villa website crash, can't get on as "service unavailable"
Probably got pissed up on his way down to sign for us and smashed his Range Rover into the building containing the main server

Fulham are an upper end Championship team. We are an upper end Championship team (+ Grealish) but we just happen to play in the Premier League.
There is no embarrassment here; it’s more of an indictment as to the quality of our shoddy squad devoid of genuine PL quality.

January is a great month

What a wonderful time of year. Back to work, everyone in the office is as depressed as **** because Christmas is over, the December slow down has finished and work starts to pick up again, and everyone feels like there’s nothing on the immediate horizon that they can look forward to.
Not me though - I’ve got two weeks off at the start of Feb. Kiss my face.

How about Thomas Frank to replace Smith?

Netflix.
Not as good as Last Chance U but still very watchable. Even if each season seems to have 1 or 2 arrogant clearings in the woods who you're begging to have a knee snapped ASAP.
I’ve seen two seasons so far. Two of them in the first season (Martell and Bowers) come across as horribly arrogant whereas the three lads in the 2nd season are much more humble and grounded.

All of that sounds horrifically shit.
Clubbing is for bellends.

Traore is much better than either AEG or Trezeguet.
Fair play to Wolves, they have the extra distraction of the Europa League, and their season started weeks and weeks ago yet they’re currently sitting in 5th place.

Been a bit melancholy the last week or so. Nothing major, just thinking back to when I was younger and reminiscing about the good times I had in my late teens and early twenties. Maybe its a delayed reaction to hitting 40! Who knows!
Thinking about heavy nights out we use to have at Godskitchen, Sundissential, and the more cheesy places like Snobs and The Dome II. Great venues like Code, Sanctuary, Bonds and Que Club. Good times! I don't think that era for proper clubbing will ever be beaten. Been watching all the old videos on Youtube and listening to the compilation mixes.
Good times...I used to go out to all these places too. I’d like to also add Bakers and Stoodi Bakers, Wobble, and The Steering Wheel to that list.

I have recently binge watched QB1: Beyond The Lights
It’s a fly on the wall documentary following some of the most promising quarterbacks at high school level in the US. It’s fascinating to see how they are basically minor celebrities at such a young age (way moreso than a promising young footballer in this country), but with that comes various pressures.
These lads have, in some ways, already made it because of their status as a local celebrity (arguably as national celebrities in the circles of top-tier high school football) but at the same time they haven’t yet reached the big time, so haven’t made anything at all. It’s interesting to see how they handle it, conduct themselves on the field/in day to day life, and keep grounded (one or two don’t and clearly have an obvious arrogance due to their talent).
Definitely one for sports fans as a whole and not just those who watch American Football.

Allez, Allez, Allez is a shit football chant. The main lyrics are cack and the “Allez Allez Allez” part often sounds like people are blind drunk and just singing “Ayyy yuhhhayy yuhhayy” (or something equally nonsensical and incoherent).

Me either. He's really slow, and always out of position. Can join in with attacks but is rubbish at the actual defending part of the game. Southampton must be pissing themselves that we paid as much as we did.
I remember reading a Saints forum and the general feeling was that nobody cared he was being sold and instead they were happy some mug was willing to pay ~£13M for him. Some of them didn’t even see him as backup to Bertrand and thought Sam McQueen was the better option.
He’s a Championship standard left back if I’ve ever seen one.
