Aston Villa Review: Episode 137 - Villa battered by Everton

You've heard this episode of Aston Villa Review before. Villa have been terrible for ages. In the last game they offered us a glimmer of hope, picking up an unexpected point before being cut off by an international break. This week, they've brought us back down to earth with a crash by bending weakly to the will of a superior side. This time out that was Everton, the score was 4-0 and the culprits were many.

In this week's show Chris and Steve briefly discuss Jordan Amavi's injury before serving up a sober assessment of that limp defeat at Goodison Park and ask whether manager Remi Garde missed a trick or two in his tactics and team selection. Do Jack Grealish and Carles Gil warrant two starting places and should Garde switch it up against Watford? It's a cheerful one, naturally.

    • You’re not a better fan than me just because you won’t get hundreds of pounds if we screw this up
    • I think the League One PSR is 60% wages/turnover, small heath are currently at like 140% but their version of parachute payments is contracts signed the summer before relegation are exempt from the 60% calculation. They can spend as much as they like on transfer fees but it's the weekly wages that will kill them. You have to expect there will be things like massive promotion bonuses etc
    • It's a weirdly American thing on multiple fronts.  America has a long tradition of insult and mocking comedy, a take on the banter culture thing really but sometimes more biting and potentially cruel. Some of the most revered comedy figures, particularly of the early Hollywood era that kinda set the stage for what is glamour and great and good in the US, were essentially insult comedians and that elevated the style to be particularly beloved and therefore getting roasted was something almost like being anointed or honoured. There's also a very long tradition of... self aggrandisement, selfcentredness, narcissism at the top end of American society. There's an old gag that kinda explains it - What's better than giving a million dollars to charity? Everyone knowing you gave a million dollars to charity. Having an event where you are the subject, even if it's ostensibly to have the piss taken, is something to be savoured - you were important enough to be the centre of attention for a while, the show is about you. There's just enough of the mocking to puncture some of the pomposity of it (similar in some ways to how ancient Rome when they gave 'triumphs', celebratory festival parades, to their great figures, it was done with one person next to them in the parade constantly reminding them they are only human), but it's still essentially dick waving and a celebration of how awesome you are.  It's very unBritish.
    • Yup heading out with the Villa flight package so minimal time in Athens unfortunately
    • Wordle 1,054 6/6 ⬜⬜🟨⬜⬜ ⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 ⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 ⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 ⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 I got stuck in a mental block so resorted to entering random letter combinations for about ten minutes for guesses 3, 4 and 5... (argh!) 😕 The ones that were accepted all look like they might be Latin... I do hope that Wordle doesn't accept Latin words! :s
    • People were clowning Birmigham owner but Edens came with a recent clanger in that NYT article “Our fans are like, ‘We like tradition,’” Edens said. “And I tell them: ‘No, you don’t. You think you do, but you don’t.’ I mean, who doesn’t like a big-screen TV with plenty of food and beer?” Then he spread his arms wide and answered his own question: “Nobody.”

    • Move to Bundesliga would be some move. Maybe too big of a step to start with?  How highly rated is he?
    • Guessing with the premium membership you will get first dibs at the tickets a day or two before the normal membership would do.  They should throw in Villa TV aswell for free
