Funnily enough, I'd lived in Yorkshire for ten years before I ever visited York. Finally went with my then girlfriend (now wife), who'd been working there before she moved to Leeds. 

Been many times since, though.

In the north maybe York, I was there a few times when I was young and I loved  it. In the Midlands maybe in the Malverns. And in the south maybe Lewes, a lovely medieval town in a river valley surrounded by the rolling South Downs.
