  1. All those things may be true, but 'Black Lives Matter' is a saying, a truism. You could be a Tory or a Republican and sincerely say it, without in any way being 'Marxist' or undermining your political allegiance.

    Tonight's episode of Shogun....bladdy 'ell

One to go, and I've just realised they're not going to get near the end of the story in one series. So we'll be hanging on the chance of it being renewed.

There is no such thing, its a fiction invented by right wing imbeciles. It's just an expression like Right on! or Very PC of you! or more specifically with Stay Woke, keep being aware of injustice.

The idea that it has a philosophy behind  it, is as silly as there being a philosophy behind Don't let the bastards drag you down or Keep on keeping on!

Or the hilarious idea that 'Black Lives Matter' is a 'Marxist organisation'.

  4. I think you're all missing the illogical assumption in the minds of the objectors - that a trans woman is by definition a sexual pervert, and therefore more likely to be a predator.

Whereas a 'normal' looking bloke is assumed to be probably safe until proven otherwise.

Finished 3 Body Problem and although I thought it peaked at episode 5 I still really liked it. Hoping for another series

Agreed. Perhaps because ep5 was the least 'science fiction-y', but concentrated on the relationships of the 'reluctant heroes'.

I'm quite surprised about the lack of USA domination of the plot. The defence of Earth appears to be mainly led by Europeans. Might that affect its popularity in America (and thus its chance of renewal)?

But people won't be allowed to smoke joints within sight of schools, sports centres or in "pedestrian zones" between 7:00 and 20:00.

All seems reasonable, especially the above.

  7. This afternoon, I randomly decided to watch a couple of episodes of "Alistair Cooke's America", the classic BBC documentary series from 1972. I remember watching it first time round, and enjoying the way he compared the 'old' USA with footage of the ultra-modern 'now' (i.e. 1972).

And suddenly that is half a century ago, and it all looks strangely antique.

Incidentally, I'd be interested to know what our American VTers make of it. Some episodes are on YouTube: (but it is better appreciated starting with ep1).

Another one I have thought of.

Going abroad - I have just lost the desire to go on foreign holiday or breaks. I'd rather go away for a few days in the UK now.

Actually, yeah, kinda this. Especially post-Brexit it just doesn't seem worth the hassle.

TV tip for those with kids in the appropriate age for it (whatever that might be) They have made a new Ronja the Robbers Daughter (Astrid Lindgren) series. 12 eps with the opening 6 out now.

Looks pretty well made and they've fleshed out the story a bit apparently. Only just started it so early days but it's not a kids show per se. Got some scary scenes in it if you're too young while not going grim dark :)

On Netflix, might need a VPN thou.

Oh wow, thanks. Our (now) eight year old granddaughter absolutely loved the first series, watched it all the way through three times. This is great news.

EDIT: Ah, just realised this is the live action version. The one our GD loved was the Miyazaki/Ghibli anime one. She'll probably still be interested.

  10. 'Pointless' tonight. Round one, classical music. Fill in the missing words - Vivaldi, 'The F--- Seasons'.

Contestant (confidently): "Oh, I think I know this one - 'The Five Seasons'"

How Armstrong kept a straight face I do not know.

  11. Struggling to think of anything, tbh.

There are countless things I'm not interested in, but that's because I never was, not because I've 'lost' interest.

Can't imagine ever losing interest in music or reading.

Then it descends into the absurd and the pacing is all over the place. Plot lines left confused (even if there is another season.)

sadly it seems like the show runners are great at the set up (ala GOT) but when it come to nailing the landing they fall flat in their face. It’s so obvious this is an abridged version of the original material which means they’ve failed imo.

The music also irritated me and actually made me angry. He’s just copied ALL of the soundscapes from Westworld. What a clearing in the woods! It is identical - what a missed opportunity!

Can't agree. I enjoyed it right to the end (haven't read the book, and don't intend to). It's going to be a long wait for s2 (if there is one).

Not really. Occasionally, I glean some information from comments in off topic, and as I scrolled through the football section on the guardian website recently I saw we were playing Ajax, so I guess we qualified for Europe last year, but that's about it. And I don't miss knowing or feel curious about it.

Sorry, but in this, of all seasons, that is absolutely staggering!

You just can't beat Larry David if you want to howl with laughter. When the blind character, Mike asks Larry if his girlfriend is really beautiful and Larry replies with, "What does it matter, you can't see her, that's one of the advantages, right? And the good hearing, or is that just a myth." Comedy doesn't get much better than that.

I guess you have to hear the delivery, but that reads to me like something that Bernard Manning would have rejected as unfunny.
