It’s not dissimilar to that time Labour (?) put Cameron’s head on that detective from Life on Mars. Let’s associate our enemy with something good and/or popular. That’ll show ‘em.

I remember this one. The tag line was 'Don't let him take Britain back to the 80s' or something. I was like 'Oh man that sounds good!' Time travel! 80s! Please.

Then I learnt about the Tories.

All that shows to me is we need to stop bloody changing it. I recognise all the badges on there at that size, not because they scale down well, but because they haven't changed every few years.

I assume for the same reason mentioned above, but scaled down I can't see what ours is meant to be. Lack of familiarity possibly, but it doesn't scale down well.

To be fair how many of them actually do? Only Wolves' badge is identifiable as involving a wolf. If you didn't know the others then they'd all be a much of a muchness.

Restricted on phone, but… is this better?

I think the layout is a bit different on this one to the leaked one. This looks fine and better. I do tend to agree now that the positioning of the lion isn't great in the leaked one (it was too high and close to the top, which could have been avoided with the removal of the 1874 and lowering of the lion).

Tbh, this version looks pretty great. I like it

anyway… he was making the point that we can’t deviate too much from the Lerner badge that we’ve had for so long and that has been recognisable and identified with the club for a long while… that there’s a certain remit to meet… in terms of “global” recognition and appeal…

I was saying this from the start!

I've also kind of gone off the badge now. I just wish we'd gone for the gaslamp one. It was there under our noses. We didn't know how good we had it.

    It's quite simply not.

You can claim his redesign isn't or doesnt look good to your taste, but it's better than the one he critiqued because its actually visible when scaled down.  The new one we've is trademarked is an abomination.

That said, I do think his redesign is using more freedom than the version Heck came up with was allowed. If he said we have to keep the colours and the old lion, there's nothing that could have been done to produce a good badge.

Of course it's about my taste. I can only speak for myself, and I think the Heck one is better (but I don't like the colours, drop shadow or the pants lion as I say).

I still maintain last year's gaslamp was the best option I've seen.

Detailed thread worth looking at here…

The hilarious bit of this is when his redesign is a lot worse than the 'new' crest he's critiquing.

Yes I dislike the drop shadow and colours, but the redesign in that thread is pants, and it's a lesson in how these things aren't as easy as people think. It's easy to critique, but when you get those ingredients it's difficult to actually nail it.

I’m still against pale blue and yellow but… he’s improved it… dunno if feasible though…

    We need claret…

That's what I've been saying all along. The design isn't bad at all. The colours and the drop shadow are the issue. It looks nice with a good lion that actually stands out with some contrast.

The whole match should be watchable on iPlayer. Can you not find that clip?

Anybody going against McGinn won’t have a future here. Will be loved by Emery.

Yeah but come on McGinn doesn't tell the manager to make subs. Not unless someone was injured. That's not his role—Emery's pretty renowned for his interest in managing all the fine points in a game as we all know.

That's what i saw. Can't obviously verify if thats what actually happened

There's no universe where John McGinn told Emery to take off Duran.

So frustrating that a few simple tweaks would make the leaked one so much better. I'd be happy with any of these 3.

This is more or less what I was doing yesterday. But I wasn't bothered about the text position. TBH these are all nicer. I think they're decent. Any of these would be good.

And sure I prefer the text on top.

Plenty of people, and a few designers on twitter and other forums have said just that.. You've made your opinion clear, but your opinion is not some objective fact.

Eh. If they think the Lerner v1/2 is better then they're not very good designers! (except for the drop shadow—if their objection is because of that then that's a different matter). And yes that is my opinion!

Are you kidding? Talk about not reading the room.

As for the Leeds one, it was professional but just shit.  The Heck badge is shit professionally and shit generally, so probably considered worse because it’s from multiple viewpoints.

Talk about making over-generalisations based on social media.

Poor way of judging it maybe, but when fans forums like this have ~95% polling that this Heck Badge isn’t the badge they want, that’s not to be sniffed at.  If the fans are almost unanimously saying they don’t want it, on websites and online conversations then something is wrong.  It’s not like a close call.

I get it with Leeds when they had that awful option, but this is just silly (imo of course).

Just look at those Cambodia/Phillipines photos above. For 15+ years we've been branded with that yellow/blue crest. Although I hate those colours, there is logic in evolving the brand rather than a complete reboot.

What's the sense in a reboot? And there is no way the v2 Lerner crest is better than the new version. No designer on the planet is going to agree with that (except for maybe not liking the drop shadow).

If Heck and the club have decided to evolve the Lerner crest then there is sense behind that, and minorities of fans not preferring it on club message boards isn't really relevant. Loads of brand evolutions take time for people to get used to. I live/have been living in Madrid and everyone hated the new Atletico crest to begin with, now the fans like it.

Only if it will add any value to the squad. So if there is nothing out there then no.

We can't just have one striker. That would be madness.

    1) given the reaction to it, it’s not what the fans wanted

    2) According to the Villa fans who work professionally in the branding field it’s a very poor quality design excluding personal opinions on it

so not only do the fans not like it but it’s shit!  This Heck badge is like Brexit but then UK creating an exclusive country agreement only with Russia. 😳

    1) Websites and online overreactions are a poor way of judging this. 'It's not what the fans wanted' is very Brexit. Everyone has their own fantasy version of 'something' perfect in their head, but designing things doesn't work like that.

    2) One guy on Twitter? I did some professional work in the branding field and it's nothing like the disaster people are making it out to be. (Emphasis on 'some' admittedly)

Well the professional one leaked is different to what the fans wanted and that’s an abomination so maybe the fans were right or at least professionals don’t always get it right.

'What the fans wanted'. This is Brexit all over again!

Before 2003 Chelsea were not a bigger club than Villa. In 2033 it is conceivable we could be a bigger club than Chelsea again. We finished ahead of them last year and on course again.

We should be more assertive about who we are.

It's irrelevant. And really they surpassed us in 1998. A European Cup and top division win in the 80s is less relevant than the last twenty odd years of premier league and European history. It's not about assertiveness. I see it as logical.

And it doesn't matter if 'most of' the fans like the round badge—no design thing anywhere should be done by committee/public vote.

No word of a lie, I just flicked over to Football Focus and they were interviewing a player who had a monochrome badge on his training gear.

I had to do a double AND triple take because I couldn't work out why this guy who I didn't recognise was wearing a black and green training top with a Villa badge on it.

Then my brain focused and I understood it was Michael Carrick of Middlesbrough being interviewed before our game.

I've not made this up this was a genuine thought process my brain went through.

So all this "unique" and rondel looks too much like Chelsea is utter bollocks.

It's really not. You're right that whatever we do with a shield it'll look similar to Boro in monochrome, which is a shame, but we're a much bigger team than Boro. Less so in colour, but yes it is definitely similar. But more significantly Chelsea are a much bigger team than us, and one we're trying to compete with on a global market.

The more I think about this the more I realise how much this new badge resembles the original Lerner badge.

The smaller lion coupled with the 1874 cluttering up the bottom is very similar

    Such a step back

It's night and day. The new badge is clearly an evolution of the two Lerner badges, but it's so much better than both. That 1874 is nowhere near as egregious as 'Prepared'. As I said in the previous post, I wonder if it is there to balance the star. It's the same colour for a reason. It also makes it a trio of white features—the star, the year, the border. And design elements work better in odd numbers.

It's the same shield with a slight curve at the top. Huge improvement. If you're mocking the addition of a slight curve, then you could mock anything in design.
    Same background. Same so irrelevant

Same lion but they've added a stupid shadow that looks like it's been done on MS Paint     Well, it is an improvement in a way because the lion stands out from the background.
    Same star Same so irrelevant
Same colours that don't work Same, so irrelevant, but I never liked those colours. I do think it's difficult to get a really 'pinging' version of our colours into a badge though. I've rarely seen a mockup of a Villa badge where I think 'wow'.

They've added our full name which is an improvement, but inexplicably put it at the bottom which throws the whole balance of the design off. The lion now looks squashed in at the top Huge improvement—honestly, the lion being at the top doesn't 'throw off the balance of the design' at all. There is far more balance in this new design than the old one. I'm not sure balance is the word to use here anyway: there's an improvement on focus and design heirarchy. The lion and the logo is now the main focus and 'Aston Villa' is the secondary focus. There is none of the  split focus between the AVFC and the lion in the old badge. There's much nicer negative space too—I'd almost say it was a nice use of negative space. The old design is like a rammed together box of similarly sized details.

They've added 1874 in a weird place which clutters it up (this was the exact reason "prepared" got removed from the old badge) I don't mind this, but I think it's too big, but it is in balance with the star. On my version, where I made it smaller, it seems out of balance with the star. I wonder if it's there to add a bit of balance to the star.

They've added a bevel to the shield. I don't think that changes much Minor improvement—adds visual interest. There's difference between the two line weights too, which adds variety to the design.

What is it that you think is an improvement?
