People seem to forget that when Smith left Brentford they were just a couple of points off the play off places, and then struggled and dropped down the league when Frank took over. It was only the following season after they spent more than any other team in the championship that they improved and seriously challenged for promotion, Frank had way more to spend than Smith had.
Brentford actually have an awful lot to be thankful for when it comes to Smith, he played a big part in developing the way they play, he helped with the development of some of their players that they eventually sold for big money which they reinvested which then helped with their promotion plus, and it was he that whilst with us gave them big money for some of those players.
Dean Smith was a great manager for us and Brentford were a good club for him who supported him when we went on far worse losing runs than what got him sacked by Villa.Thomas Frank had a poor start when he took over very similar to what Dean was going through when he joined to assist him and the facts are we have improved greatly under Thomas. We got to the playoff final finishing 3 rd in his first full season then repeated it the following season after having to sell Benrahma and Watkins for around 55 mill.he got us promoted to the PL.This season after promotion for the first time in many years we didn’t sell any of our best players and invested 28 million on 3 new players.
Not understating the good work Dean done for our club but like Thomas he has/had a great back up team that’s responsible for recruitment ect I would finish by saying Deans departure coincided with the sad death of our young technical director (28) Robert Rowan that rocked the club and was a big set back.

I think Dean is a good manager, but I also think he is flawed, in much the same way as I think Arsene Wenger was flawed, in defensive appreciation....both had clouded judgment in their focus on attack, at the expense of defence....its arguable, Arsene's best time was when George Graham, left him a defence, in his formative years.
I think Thomas Frank has focused on Brentford, defensively too and while you have had some bumps in the road this season, your team looks more resillient, than under Deans stewardship, imo.
Steven Gerrard, is still work in progress....and when he has the opportunity to repair our leaky defence ( across the team, not just the back 4) we may see a different perspective, to what we see now.
analogy......Its hard to criticise a brick layer, when he is only up to the damp course.....let him build the wall, and then cast the judgment.
Good reply can’t argue with any of that but could simply reply we will never know re.Dean v Thomas or Dean vGerrard?Yes it’s a slog this league and a massive step up and very few highlights when you are used to winning more than you lose.I can say it now we are pretty well safe that I prefer the championship and 1 more season will do for me in the PL.There’s no fun going into most of these games knowing you have about a 10% chance of getting even a draw.I’ve missed 2 games home and away and games at Spurs and Arsenal have been souless apart from our as you would expect great away support.Man city away on a Tuesday night like a library had better nights out at Carlisle.Everton and Villa park are my favourite grounds was my first time at Everton.Nottingham Forrest and Sheffield United take some beating for atmosphere.Leicester City have a drum and these stupid clappers the same as Fulham FFS and when their fans finally sung it was “premier league champions you’ll never sing that”to us Brentford
You are spot on about Thomas Frank and sorting our defence out after Dean left and being more direct at times.

Wonder if Villa would be in the same position had Dean stayed.Still believe he was treated poorly and don’t see the progression under Gerrard be it mainly from the TV.Good news for me is it looks like we will be at the superb Villa park next season.

I really think it’s a non story,if the bloke asking the question was a football fan which he appeared not to be,it might have gone differently.Think he just wanted to get away.Im not a fan of badge kissers and know that if a bigger club comes in for him he would be off like a shot.

Yes I hope they stick with Dean

Dean Smith has never beaten a team he has previously managed.I went yesterday score flattered us I expect as they did miss some early chances but we definitely deserved to win and gives us a bit of confidence for the rest of the season with our best players now back and the improving Ericksen.

But how do you account for his Brentford form if we are going on the Grealish theory. This Watkins wouldn’t even start for championship Brentford.
He would start a premier league Brentford

Certainly not in this window, but you never know next summer. Saying that, Arsenal are potentially signing Isak so that would most likely rule out a move for Watkins.
20% sell on fee? Is that just on any profit we make on him? I hope so.
Yes

I joked earlier about Arsenal bidding for him, which is why he didn’t play today. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up there by the end of the next window at the latest.
He is an Arsenal fan and a 20%sell on for us would be handy. Can’t see it happening though.

The idea of Brentford having most of their team missing is being greatly exaggerated:
Fernández 10 PL appearances
Pinnock 18 PL appearances
Jansson 19 PL appearances
Bech Sørensen 4 PL appearances
Roerslev 9 PL appearances
Onyeka 17 PL appearances
Nørgaard 18 PL appearances
Jensen 13 PL appearances
Canos 18 PL appearances
Wissa 11 PL appearances
Toney 17 PL appearance
So they obviously weren't as depleted as some are making out, most of their team today would have played a big part in the good season they're having so far. Another thing about their squad, and I mean this as a compliment, is that a lot of their players are much of a muchness, meaning if one or two are out injured, in most positions they have someone of a similar quality to bring in.
You could probably say we were just as much affected by Nakamba, Mings, Bailey, and Waktins missing, as they were by the players missing for them.
Raya
Henry
Ajer
Janelt
Mbeumo
All starters

Think some of you need to cut us some slack yes we were pretty poor today and lucky to get 3 points but we only started with 4 of our starting line up from the opening game of the season.Even Thomas Frank thought the same but you weren’t that great either today granted also not helped by key players being out Oli especially.I’m pretty sure we will stay up now especially as we have key players returning very soon and expect you to push on towards the top 6 in the coming weeks.

Not confident as we still have too many of our quality players out Henry Ajer Raya Mbeumo Janelt. So expect just 5 of the players who started at Villa park earlier in the season to be available.Draw will be double handy will add hate Sunday games and games constantly being changed in this league but it’s all about the money.

Still not convinced by them. Think they might have enough to stay up though
With 20 points now on the board and most of our better players like Tony Ager and Pinnock back this month and Raya and Josh Dasilva back in Feb along with money to spend in January I think we will just about do it.

Very sad to see this genuine guy lose his dream job, wonder if he hadn’t had to lose so many players through injury how results would have gone.Hope he gets another job soon. Will watch with interest who comes in.

Fair result in the end although had Oli come on earlier might had been a different story.Ref and linesman over our side dreadful. We aren’t the pretty team we used to be who would get bullied out of games and opposing fans would praise after beating us as I said pre match we have a more physical aggressive mid field. We have been lucky that our first 3 games have been against under strength sides but you have take that as not one of our squad has ever played in the PL.
Although I’ve seen all the previous games in recent years at Villa Park this is the first time I’ve seen it with 42000 in and what an impressive sight it is in a truly wonderful stadium.Oli got a great reception from our fans and as expected Dean Smith congratulated his former players after the game the mans class. Also good to see Bees fans mingling and chatting with Villa fans at the station after the game all very civil.Very different from my experiences over the other side of the city.- 11

Early days to be confident or negative regarding predicting the result.I’ve been to 2 friendlies and the 2 league games.Could argue it was a good time to play Arsenal and Palace and deserved both results.Defensively we look pretty solid with the inclusion of the excellent Ajer although think Pontus will struggle in this league Midfield of Janelt Norguaard and Onyeka has been impressive although not as creative without the injured Jensen it’s full of energy and agression that’s needed in this league.Canos and Henry are doing ok as wing backs up front Toney has yet to score and although a handful will take a while to adjust to this level with Mbeumo alongside who is now back to his best.Looking forward to going back to the superb Villa park after having to endure the grim Selhurst Park last Saturday. We won’t be a push over obviously would take a draw now but hope we make a game of it looks like Oli will miss this one which is a plus for us although would have liked to have seen him out there.Whatever the score I will have a great long day out in Brum

Arsenal were very poor at times and without their main strikers was a good time to play them

Well we finally made it what a day that was hard to enjoy the game with so much at stake but a good atmosphere considering the low attendance. We finished the season well 1 defeat in last 14 games without Dasilva Henry and Norguaard (for most)3 of our better players.Thomas has done great job on making us hard to beat but not as easy on the eye as last season.I honestly believe some of our squad will excel in the PL won’t include Pontus in that but we have some good young players on the fringe.I believe Toney will not be sold unless a 35 mill +bid comes in but don’t think there will be the money about next season other than the top 6 maybe.Looking forward to Villa park next season and I’m sure you will enjoy our new stadium it’s superb for a club of our size and you will get 3000 seats almost double you got at Griffin Park and some great drinking places by the river a bit pricey though. Not sure what lies ahead but I’m going to enjoy it even if it’s just one season. Thanks to the many on here who have been routing for us over the las 2 seasons

Class by Villa fans but not unexpected will always get a good reception from our club as well although visiting Walsall fans gave him dogs at our place when they played us in the cup.Hope he brings Norwich straight back up.
