    It's a possibility but the club want both to stay, Downing won't leave and if Young does it won't be this month. This signing signals intent to players like Young and Downing more than anyone else to show them look we are signing these players and we will be back up there next season so stay with us and help us get up there.

    it's gone a bit quiet on the Adam front but he definitely wants to come here regardless... might be something to do with an offer of first team football at a better club than anyone else in for him (not guaranteed it at Liverpool) but one more bid should do it.

But that was a very last minute thing i.e. they didn't need to let him go and they've publicly announced the fact that he's handed in a transfer request, they didn't have to - furthermore trying to spark a bidding war

    Not at all Why would they want an unhappy player on their books who has had nothing but trouble up at Sunderland (racism towards his mom, car bricked by Newcastle fans, slagging off all over their RTG forum) when they can cash in now and get 18m upfront rising to 24m for him, and spend that money elsewhere? They have Gyan who, can be IMO, just as good. But Bent was keeping him out the side.

    That would be because this was not supposed to break today but Bent handing in a transfer request has made the initial bid and second bid surface. All of the local journos including me and other people who are in with the club like MM, were told to keep quiet, so there were more chance of this deal going through under wraps without sparking a bidding war. Bent wants to come here, no doubt about that, otherwise he wouldn't have handed in a transfer request (handing in of your notice results in no big signing on fee when he signs - how many players would sacrifice that to sign for Villa?)

    Basically from what I know we offered 18m upfront straight cash and were willing to transfer it all in one go over this weekend if they accepted and it went through. They declined the 18m bid on Friday so we went back in with an 18.2m bid rising to 24m with future appearances, goals and England caps which they've accepted but are trying to keep on the low. The Sunderland Chronicle story is just a rebuff of old news and he's in a café with his agent in Birmingham as we speak waiting for a phone call from Sunderland.

    will ireland be going the other way?? I can see Ireland going the other way! As I say I've only heard the bid is accepted so if they infact deem the bid too low then Stephen Ireland will be the makeweight for the extra cash yes.

    Known for a few days about this and MM will back me up on this one as we were both fed the same information at the same time. Did not want to comment on any names as the media were also told to keep quiet to help this one go through without sparking a bidding war. I now hear the bid has been accepted and Darren Bent is in a café in Birmingham with his agent waiting for permission to talk to Sunderland where he will then travel to Bodymoor Heath. The bid is about 18.2m and will rise to 24m with performances, goals and England caps. Pretty confident this one will go through.

    Thought we played very well, if we play like that for the rest of the season we'll be fine. Nice to see us not rolling over and I think we should have won today. Onwards and upwards!
