Agree I personally think we need to use 'oh when the Villa go marching in' but the slow version that builds up over about two verses then goes into the normal version. I'm not doubting he made some cracking signings but when you get given x amount and come back with signings like Harewood, Heskey, Beye, Sidwell, Shorey etc - you just cannot be trusted with large amounts of money anymore. MON was told he could have a small amount of transfer money and didn't like it so walked, and that is that. Gardner, Shorey, Sidwell all gone with both MON and Houllier's help, Carew will be next after Bent signing is announced tomorrow and Beye won't be far after. The latter two take almost 100k a week of the wages. There has always been money available but do we really want our wage bill being higher than our turnover? Are we Portsmouth?

:!: Unfortunately to get a big signing we have to pay a premium and this was always going to be the case for a goalscorer. I said on here before we had 20m budget for a goalscorer and seems that way now. But the fee is 19m not 24

Few places saying the fee is 24m upfront but from what I'm told the fee Sunderland eventually accepted is 19m rising to 24 with add ons.

I think the key here is that he handed in a transfer request AFTER we bid 18m for him

Downing will not leave, we do not need to sell and we would find it difficult to replace someone of his standard. Villa have told Downing he is not for sale and he is fine with that and happy to continue playing for Villa, he enjoys it here.
