All those defensive things arent Rice exclusive. The offensive things are exclusive to Phillips. Rice can't do Phillips job, for West Ham he's a proper take no risks, get it wide sit and sit deep without the ball player. He's good at that, cool. The idea we have a double pivot but Rice gets a free pass for being less expansive than our CB's is pretty funny. Give Phillips that job and you'll get something closer to his Leeds performances. Rice is giving you all he has. Against everybody in this group those qualities are redundant. If were sticking with the two Grealish might be the better fit tonight, I think if he plays in the middle you need a more solid base than say Rice - Mount and this could work. It won't, because Gareth. But I can hope.

I don't think it is, look at the quality of manager and general play. Their are maybe 3-4 good teams and the rest vary between average and hopeless. Few things with Phillips really. For us he almost plays like a 3rd CB and he's really good at wriggling away from pressure and finding a good out ball forward to start an attack. That's a very different role compared to this bombing past the CF role Southgate has him doing. So now we have a player being played in a role he hasn't played for 3 years and never played at a high level alongside a DM who has completed 3 forward passes in two games. Three. Rice is getting a free ride for being properly pointless because he's established and people see him as the great white hope for England. He was our best player by a good way against Croatia and people are still choosing to criticise him over the others who haven't performed at all.

We've never beaten a top team when it matters. We don't do upsets, we go out with a whimper and a lot of what ifs. We underperform to such a boring level. You watch Ukraine play and think they could pull off an upset here against anybody, even if they lose 9/10 times. Any team that should on paper beat us will, because we're not a team. Any team that we should beat we will. Because we're individuals.

Problem is, we lose to any of France/Germany/Portugal so talking about routes past that and chances of us getting to finals sort of doesn't matter? I'd fancy a Ukraine, Poland, Denmark, Russia etc etc to be in with a chance in any knockout game. Stay tight, take your one chance and see what happens. We don't even have that in our locker, we're hopeless.

Not the case at all with Phillips. As you've seen with Croatia he can do things Rice obviously can't. The issue is that he's being relied on in a role he's not comfortable in. Rice does nothing, completely nothing. Sticks to the centre backs and plays it 5 yards. Now we're relying on a DM being played out of position to play short intricate passes and advance up the pitch, roll a player and move forward. That's never going to happen and it's made by Rice's inability to advance play. This isn't a double pivot as people like to moan about, this is a 3 in midfield and Rice takes the holding role but he does so by completely avoiding any offensive responsibility. Play Phillips in Rice's role and now we have a DM that will advance the play, and an actual box to box that can do other things without the sole responsibility of moving it up the pitch on them. Anybody trying to say Rice should be playing over Phillips is basing it on either personal bias or some media idea that Rice is a top drawer DM capable of playing at any club in the world.

Supply isn't Kane's issue. This is an argument for Lewandowski playing for Poland and its visibly obvious when you watch them. This isn't what's happening here, on current form I'd take any English striker in the top 2 tiers of football. He's that poor.
