  1. I don't understand why he'd want to go to an inferior league, Bundesliga can't be better than the Premier League surely? I suppose it would be CL football that drags him eventually.

Well, is the Premier League really the best league? Or do we just believe that because Sky keep telling us so? A few years ago I would have said it was... but the standard has been piss poor really this season.

The Premier League has the biggest world wide audience. I suspect it is partly due to marketing and partly due to the football having a better balance of excitement and quality than most leagues across the world. Techinal ability does not always equal exciting football. Many english fans may ridicule the idea that it's the 'best league in the world', but there's no doubting it's world wide popularity.

  2. Right.... Now to kick Wigan before they go down... To teach their players and fans a lesson in manners for not rolling over to our fine club in previous meetings and relieving us of this stress sooner... Bring on the next game and another 6-1 spanking ala Sunderland

Knowing that our attack is decent (CB staying would help!), I'd take any win with a clean sheet!

  3. Now that we're confirmed safe I want to see a picture of Benteke and Weimann signing new contracts on the OS first thing tomorrow morning.

Hopefully it is only the timeline that disappoints you!

  4. Let's not kid ourselves. We are not safe yet. The league could be so unimpressed by our showing that they decide to relegate 4 teams this season.....

Jesting aside, I'd like to think 'the league' remembered our decent form in the final third of the season and took note of our 40 to 43 points as being more than is usually required to be safe.

  5. Ah **** it , my insurance bet is up in smoke

I pleased to state I managed to resist my insurance bet; partly because I kept thinking there's a reason why we were 100-1 against (i.e. it's very, very unlikely) and partly because I couldn't be bothered to work out how to place a treble bet online!

    Massive relief all round!

  6. Not a massive F1 fan, prefer MotoGP but I do have a theory about F1 drivers and I wondered if anyone else has noticed the same thing. Many F1 drivers have a very similar shape head in that it is almost a long oblong shape except Hamilton.

Hill, Schumacher, Senna, Prost, Coulthard, Alonso, Vettel, Webber, Grosjean, Di Resta, Button, Sutil, Maldonado these are just the ones I can picture but they all definitely have a similar facial structure. I have no idea what it means, so I guess I have no theory other than an observation.

    I'll get my coat...

My head is fairly regular in shape and I'm not mixed race. Now I know why I'm not an F1 driver.

  7. I think its a great thread. The fact that on the night we could find whether Villa will remain in the Premiere league and we are talking about Barry Bannan - brilliant!

Some might enjoy taking their mind off an event they can not influence.

On another note, how can we be relegated tonight?

  8. I'm no Bannan hater, but I am aware of his limitations and the limitations of using statistics. I suspect the truth about his abilities and what he offers to our first team or squad, lies somewhere between the 'scapegoaters' and your good self.

Be fair, I've got criticisms and I've made them in this thread.

It would be wrong to say I'm someone who is constantly gushing with unjust praise and never says anything critical.

That's why I say I have a balanced view, but when I use the word "balance" it makes some sections of this thread go crazy.

Perhaps you could start afresh and state who you would currently drop to accomodate Bannan and explain his strengths in direct comparison with our current first team midfielders.

  9. Con, please answer this honestly - do you know Barry Bannan in person?

    No!

The question is again framed to suggest it is completely strange to say anything positive about Bannan's football. You must have an ulterior motive!

I'm just looking at the stats, and some of the highlights and coming to a logical opinion based on those.

Some of you guys are scapegoating based on misunderstanding his game, and some don't like us having a small technical player in midfield. The latter group have been complaining about his every appearance since the start of the season.

  10. Vanden borre was mentally something like a bad boy  he didnt have the maturity to take his football carriere seriously now he is trying to get a contract from anderlecht again. its a shame he was a very good talent. instead of training he went out to dancings in the middle of the night. such a waste of talent =/

Belgium Guy, your use of english is great for VT! Easily good enough that we can perfectly understand your opinions whilst still providing an ocassional gem like the above. Brilliant!

  11. in my opinion its al down to the villa board, benteke rather stay for a year his agent confirmed this aswell his intentions are to stay for at least 1 more year but if the villa board accepts an offer well then it isnt up to benteke im afraid.

I can't remember the last time we sold a good player who didn't want to leave. Hopefully that means CB is here for another season or more!

  12. What do you do when asked to be best man and really don't want to do it?

I've been asked to do it twice and have refused on both occasions. If you're shy and introverted public speaking is the last thing you want to do. The first guy who asked me I'd known for around 5-6 years and when I turned him down explaining why I didn't want to do it neither he nor his family spoke to me again. It was taken as an insult but certainly not intended as one and while it's an honour to be asked should you not have the right to decline?

It is very poor form to end a friendship because someone explained why they were not comfortable being a best man.

I had little to no choice to be best man for my brother, back in my early twenties. It was 20 years ago when PowerPoint wasn't even an option! I was a hundred times more nervous being best man than I was being in the spotlight at the alter for my own wedding the following year. My speech was just about okay with a couple of jokes (cue polite laughs), a couple of thank yous and raising a toast to finish. I hated every second of the few minutes and was relieved that I could finally enjoy the rest of the day when it was over. Between being more confident and being able to fall back on a few PowerPoint photos, I like to think I'd do a better job now; even so I'm glad everyone I know who might now ask me is already married!

  13. BetVictor's odds are probably the best. Pays about 65/1. I have stuck a tenner on!

How is the multiple bet done on line? I'm unsure how they are all together, i.e. the winning from Wigan winning tomorrow going on the other results required.

  14. To all those who refuse to bet against Villa, think of it as an insurance policy instead. When you take out home insurance for example that doesn't mean you want your house to burn down does it? Quite the opposite in fact.

EXACTLY the scenario I have previously used (not on VT).

I'd rather 'lose' a couple of hundred quid a year on unclaimed house insurance than see my house burnt down or flooded. However, if something bad happens, at least it's paid for.

  15. Which bookies are offering the best odds for the combination of results should the worst to happen?

I'd rather lose £20 or £30 to see us in the Premier League next season or at worst get my 3 season tickets paid for.

    Oddschecker.com is your friend

I've used oddschecker to find the best single event odds (relegation), which is currently 40-1, but some of the posters were discussing better odds for the multiple match results (equating to the same tragedy) giving odds perhaps 60+ to 1. I thought it may be quicker to use other posters knowledge than work out all the combinations across odds checker.

  17. Is it possible to appeal a sending off after a second yellow?

I'm sure its all about intent and there clearly was none, simply came together in the air IF there was any contact and Benteke didn't see him - Terry going down like he got shot though, even though he seems to go down from the collision between his head and the ball the clearing in the woods.

As far as I'm aware, it is not possible to appeal a yellow, even if the yellow is a second booking.

There appears to be no intent to harm otherwise it could have been a straight red. As poor as the referee was, mostly because Terry should have been sent off earlier, Benteke gave Mason little choice but to give him a second yellow. Whilst publically supporting Benteke and being wary of keeping his services this summer, I imagine Lambert was very annoyed with our Christian.

  18. For those who love to read things into something that is probably not there, Benteke's reaction, during the team's lap of honour this afternoon, did not look like a player waving goodbye to the club. It would appear that he is happy to stay, perhaps subject to a 'too good to refuse' offer in the summer.
